Getty Ready Essay & Video Contest The Gettysburg Address: Learn It. Live It. Dear Students and Educators, KBYU Eleven invites students to enter the Getty Ready Contest in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, which was nationally commemorated on September 19 th, 2013. This contest is an opportunity for Utah s seventh through twelfth graders to learn how they can live the Gettysburg Address after having learned it. The memorization of the Gettysburg Address has been part of curriculums across the nation for many years. We encourage teachers to not only assist in the memorization of the address, but also to promote discussion among students and their families of what it means for us in the present. This will not only serve in helping students to think about topics and ideas for their contest submissions, but also help them to internalize the central themes of the Gettysburg Address. There will be two categories for entries; essay and video. Students are not in entry to both of the categories however, students can only have one entry per category. Prizes will be given to the best video and essay in the 7 th through 9 th grade group and the 10 th through 12 th grade group. There will also be a grand prize awarded to a student and the students school for best submission! Please read this packet carefully, and instruct students to do the same. Getty Ready Contest Instructions Who: 7th-12th grade Utah public school, charter school and private school students are eligible to enter the contest. What: Essay Entry: Typed, 500 words or less Video Entry: Three (3) minutes or less When: All entries MUST be delivered or postmarked on or before the contest deadline of Friday, March 21 st, 2014. How: Answer the following two questions as you write your essay or create your video. Questions: 1. What does the Gettysburg Address mean to you? 2. How can you apply the Gettysburg Address to improve your life and the lives of others? Prizes: Awards will be given in two age groups: grades 7-9 and grades 10-12 Grade level Winners: Essay Category (7th-9th) $150 cash prize Video Category (7th-9th) $150 cash prize (prize divided for group entries) Essay Category (10th-12th) $150 cash Video Category (10th-12th) $150 cash (prize divided for group entries) Grand prize Winner: Chosen from all categories (7th-12th) $150 cash prize and a school assembly with American Ride s Stan Ellsworth and the cast of Studio C. In addition, all grade level winners and the grand prize winner will have the opportunity to present their essay or video at KBYU Eleven s public screening of Ken Burn s The Address, a documentary of the importance of the Gettysburg Address in our lives today. This is not a mandatory part of the competition, but an opportunity to share their great work that will affect the lives of others as well. To learn more about The Address visit pbs.org/theaddress. RIGHTS: By participating in the contest, participants give KBYU Eleven the right to reproduce essays and videos for publicity purposes. Entries will not be returned. (Entry form last page of packet)

Essay and Video Requirements Essay Requirements: All essays must be 500 words or less. Entries must be typed and double-spaced. Do not list students name(s) on the essay (essays will be judged anonymously). o No cover sheets or report covers. Do not staple the essay. The student should only fill out the information on the entry form and PAPERCLIP it to the essay. DEADLINE: Essay and completed, signed entry form must be postmarked, e-mailed, or delivered by Friday, March 21, 2014. o Essays must be submitted with a complete entry form (including parent/guardian s signature for photo/video release). o Essays will be judged on content, impact, creativity, and mechanics. Video Requirements: Three minutes maximum, including all credits for sources used. Do not list students name(s) in the video (videos will be judged anonymously). If students create a video as a group, the prize will be divided among the group s members. Original submissions only entries must be the original work of the entrant and not previously published. Students may not use any copyrighted material, including music, trademarks, movie clips, etc., that is owned by someone else. Music: Entrants may use their own original music, or they must use royalty free audio o ALL music sources must be listed in the credits. o Videos containing copyrighted music or materials will not be accepted. PowerPoint, etc. may be used in place of video formats/equipment. File Size: File size should not exceed 2 GB. Videos should have a 16:9 or 4:3 ratio with a resolution of at least 640 x 360 or 640 x 480. Videos may be uploaded onto YouTube and submitted via video link or URL address (Videos may be submitted as a private link). DEADLINE: YouTube link or DVD along with a signed entry form must be postmarked or delivered by Friday, March 21, 2014 by 5:00 p.m. Completed entry form must include parent/guardian s signature for photo/video release. Videos will be judged on overall content, impact, creativity, and mechanics.

Theme Development Students should focus on President Lincoln s proposition that all men are created equal, and consider how they apply these principles in their own lives. Submissions should reflect each student s understanding of the Gettysburg Address and describe their efforts to exemplify and live the principles explained in the Address. Additional themes may include topics such as equality, liberty, freedom, dedication, or eliminating the issues of prejudice, racism and violence. All submitted entries should be both informative and motivational. In addition, entries will be judged on creativity and the student's ability to offer personal insights, show new ways to look at issues, and propose original solutions to unsolved problems. No racial or offensive comments or materials may be included. Entries containing racist or offensive content will not be accepted. The Gettysburg Address Delivered by Abraham Lincoln November 19 th, 1863 Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
