General Operation The Nelson Ranch on Red Lodge Creek has been part of a larger ranch operation. It s highly productive irrigated meadows contain a mixture of alfalfa, birdsfoot trefoil and cool season grasses that produce the winter s feed supply. Cattle are grazed in the creek pasture during the summer months and turned onto the meadows in early fall. The ranch is well set up for hay production. It would make a tremendous small cattle operation or horse ranch.
RECREATION & Wildlife The Nelson Ranch is what fishermen dream about, mature Cottonwood trees line the banks of Red Lodge Creek as it meanders through the ranch for three quarters of a mile where you can cast to rainbow, brown and brook trout. A trout filled pond of six acres in size lies a short distance from the house. It has depths of twelve feet and a continuous flow of pure spring water where you can spot and stalk large rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. There are several smaller ponds and a large spring that could potentially be developed into another pond. The world famous Yellowstone River is less than an hour s drive from the ranch while the Stillwater River and East and West Rosebud Creeks are just a short distance from the ranch. Lake fishing for walleye, pike, trout and bass is available in Cooney Reservoir which is approximately twenty miles north of the ranch while numerous mountain lakes and streams throughout the Beartooth Mountains are accessible as well. Whitetail deer and mule deer are very prevalent on the ranch and on occasion you may see a moose passing through as well and it s not uncommon to see a black bear in the area. As for game birds, the ranch is home to numerous species of waterfowl during the fall migration and pheasants are also present.
Improvements As you turn off Highway 78, you are greeted with the sight of a beautiful two story ranch home with mature trees and Red Lodge Creek as the back drop. The large south facing windows fill the home with natural light and provide awe inspiring views of the Beartooth Mountains. The Beartooth Mountains dominate the landscape with 25 peaks over 12,000 feet in elevation, the highest of which is Granite Peak at 12,807 feet. It is also the highest point in Montana. There are over 300 pristine mountain lakes, 25 small glaciers and several waterfalls over 300 feet in the Beartooths, along with one of the most diverse wildlife populations in North America.
