LanSchool Teachers are faced with the challenge and opportunity of using technology to make a difference in students lives on a daily basis. Technology should enable education, not inhibit it. Whether your school has a 1-to-1 initiative, bring your own device program, or something in-between, LanSchool delivers security, services and teaching tools to let your teachers do what they do best - teach. LanSchool works by enabling the teachers to monitor all the student computers within a computer based classroom. For the best view of LanSchool open up to full screen (top right hand corner next to the X) If you have a wide screen monitor you should see all of the quick access buttons displayed. If your monitor is not wide screen you will need to click in the top right under the red X, to see the additional options. The LanSchool Teacher Console The LanSchool console can be reached either through the Start Menu or the Hidden Icons tray (see diagram) and looks like a small green circle of circles Or Hidden Icons You can bring up LanSchool Console using Ctrl +Alt + l and selecting the LanSchool console 3

The Teacher Console toolbar The Teacher Console toolbar consist of menus with the key features also available as icons on the toolbar. Menu options Additional Key feature icons Logged in Student machine The student machines can either be shown as a list or thumbnails (various sizes can be chosen) Thumbnails enable the teacher to see what each student is doing and from here a teacher can select a single student or multiple students to show specific things i.e the teachers screen or a video or they can blank the student screen or limit web access If you hover over a student thumbnail it will give you the details of who is logged on to that machine. You should also see that the thumbnail magnifies for easier viewing. The Menu options There are 6 menu options: Demonstrate Monitor Restrict Administer View Help 4

Some options may be greyed out but once a student is selected more options become available. Other options only become active when the opposite option is selected. For example Stop Showing Teacher s Screen only becomes available if you have selected Show Teacher s screen To select a student click on their thumbnail, this will then be highlighted in red. To select multiple student Ctrl + click or to select all students Ctrl + a It is also possible to access some commands by selecting a student and right-clicking, a menu will appear with a list of options, such as Limiting Web access Limit Printing Gaining remote access to the Student machine Sending and collecting files from the student 5

1. Demonstrate This option gives the teacher the opportunity to demonstrate to the student machines, as well as allowing joint working with the teacher. Select a student or group of students Click on Demonstrate Show Teacher s Screen (windowed) or click on the Show button on the toolbar. To close Show Teacher Screen - click the Show button or select Demonstrate Stop Showing Teacher s Screen Teacher s Screen Students Screen The Student screen will Show Teacher s Screen (windowed) as active. The teacher has control over what the student sees. A red pointer will appear which is under the teacher s control. To show a video Select the students you want to see the video Click Demonstrate Show Video File or click the Show Video button and browse for the video file you want to show. Select the options for sending and click Start The video will talk a couple of minutes to download 6

If you selected - Transfer video to Students and begin playing - the video will auto play If you selected - Transfer video to Students (don t begin playing) - the video will not play on the Student machines until - Play previously transferred video on Student computers is selected Tests & Voting The Demonstrate menu gives the Teacher the option of creating and sending tests to student machines or asking the students to vote on a specific question, by selecting Create a test, ask student to take a test or ask students to vote. These options are also available on the toolbar. Tests There are seven pre-installed tests that can be chosen: Computers HTML Internet Maths Past Simple Verb Patterns Would-Might Or you can create your own Demonstrate Create a test enables a teacher to create either a True or False test or a multiple choice test. 7

Demonstrate Ask Students to take a test allows the Teacher to load either a pre-installed test or one that they have created previously. Options allows you to define the settings for the test, such as, Showing the students their test score and setting the time limit of the test. Students will then be sent the test and will be able to complete it. Their results/score will be visible on the teachers screen Student test screen Teacher can keep an eye on students progress The final test results can be exported to Excel. This includes - questions, answers, correction and a summary. 8

Voting The voting tool is similar to the Test tool and can be reached using either Demonstrate Ask students to vote or using the Vote button on the toolbar. The teacher can ask a question or type a question; once the Send button is clicked the students can then vote. The results are then displayed on the teachers screen along with the percentage of those who have voted so far. Once all the votes are in, the results can be seen as percentages. Click Details to give a breakdown of how each child voted. The results can be saved as an Excel spread sheet by clicking on the Export button 9

2. Monitor Menu This menu contains options which enable the teacher to access a student or group of students computer(s). Some of these options are: remote control student view students screen save a snapshot of a student s screen send student a message select random student These actions are available once a student or group of students have been selected. Monitor View student screen allows the teacher to view a larger version of a student s screen Monitor Stop viewing or remote controlling will return the teachers screen to normal. It is also possible to show a particular student s work/screen to the whole class, Select the student and then click Show Student button. Monitor Remote control student allows the teacher remote access to a student or a group of students computer. The teacher is then able to demonstrate processes or tasks to all selected computers, using the and cursor. Monitor Stop viewing or remote controlling will disconnect the remote connection. This can also be done using the Control button Monitor Save a snapshot of a student screen - allows the teacher to take a snapshot of a selected students screen. The file name contains the student login, date and time and give the option to save as a.jpg (JPG File) or.bmp (BMP file). This can also be done using the Snapshot button 10

Monitor Send a message gives the teacher an option to send a student or group of students a message. Type the message or select a message from the drop down menu. Click Send. The message will then pop up in the bottom right of the students screen This can also be done using the Message button Monitor Choose Random Student should the teacher want to select a random student to work with. The computer will select a random student and sends them a message congratulating them on being selected. This can also be done using the Random Student button 11

3. Restrict Menu Restrict Blank screen Enables the teacher to blank the students screens a message can be displayed. The message can be pre-determined by the teacher using Administer Preferences and selecting the Teacher tab Using the Blank Screen Button, drop down, there are other options including configuring the blank screen message. To Unblank the screens - Click Unblank Screen or the blank screen button Limiting Web Access Restrict Limit Web Allows the teacher to temporarily disable the web access of selected students. The Student will get a pop-up message saying they have restricted web browsing and the teacher can see which students they have restricted by the icon that appears in the bottom left of the student screen on the teacher console To stop Web restricting Click Restrict Stop Web Limiting or Click the Limit web button. Limiting Application Access Restrict Limit Applications temporarily disables the access to specific software applications for selected students. The application needs to have been identified and configured in Restrict Configure Application Limiting or Administer Preferences or using the drop down on the Limit Apps button. To activate Limit Applications Restrict Limit Applications or click the Limit Apps button. The Limit Apps icon appears on the Student screen display on the teacher console. NB - Students cannot get around this by renaming the application, as the internal program name is used. The Limit Web and Limit Applications settings can either be configured in Restrict menu, by selecting Administer Preferences or by using the drop down menu on the appropriate button. 12

Limiting Printer access Restrict Limit Printing disables the selected students access to a printer. They will be unable to print until the Limit Print button or Restrict Stop Limiting Printing is selected. This can also be done using the Limit Print button. Limiting Drive access Restrict Limit Drive restricts access to USB and CD/DVD drives. Click Restrict Limit Drives at warning message. Click Yes. A pop-up message will appear in the bottom right of the selected student s computer warning them that the drives have been restricted. The Limit Drives icon will appear on the student s screen of the Teacher Console. To stop Limiting drives - Click Restrict Limit Drives or click the Limit Drives button. This can also be done using the Limit Drives button. Muting Student Speakers Restict Mute Student Speakers mutes the sound on selected students speakers. To restore sound click Restrict Stop Muting Student Speakers or click the Mute button The Mute button image will turn RED if Mute is on. 13

4. Administer menu The Administer menu enables the teacher to manage the class lists and student s machines, send and collect students work and edit the preferences. Managing Class Lists Using the Administer One to one sub menu enables the teacher to create a new class list, select and load an existing class list or dismiss the current class list. Class lists have been set up ready for use and just need to be loaded using Administer One to one Load Class list or clicking on the Class list button on the toolbar. To Create a NEW Class List There are 2 ways of creating a class list: Click on the Administer menu then select One to One Manage Class Lists or Click the Class List button on the toolbar and select Manage Class Lists In the this class uses section make sure that the Student login name is selected. Next click. LanSchool will then search for the logged on students and list them. Tick the boxes of the students you want to include Click Add Click Save and name your class list. If you are editing an existing class list you may want to use Save As. Disconnecting from a current class Administer One to one Dismiss Current Class or clicking the select Dismiss Current Class drop down and 14

Editing Class Lists Class Lists can also be edited, saved and compared using the Administer One to One To run a program on a student machine Select a student or a group of students, then click Administer Run Program on Student Machine or click. This enables the teacher to select and run a specific program, which already exists on the Teachers computer, on the selected student(s) machine. Administer Shutdown student, Log off or Restart Student give the teacher control over the Student machine should they need it. Sending and Collecting documents from Students Using LanSchool it is possible for the teacher the send and receive homework/coursework from the student. Sending Administer Send Files to Student allows the Teacher to send Documents, Spreadsheets, Pictures, PowerPoint s, Music and Video to the selected student(s) machine. Select the student or groups of students Click Administer Send Files to Student Browse for the file or document you want to send In the Student destination panel Click the radio button by Special Folder Select Student Documents (%MyDocuments%\LanSchool Files) from the drop down options. Click Send Now - the Status box will show the progress Click Finished 15

Collecting Administer Collect files from Students enables the teacher to collect in work from the student(s) Select the student or groups of students Click Administer Collect files from Students In the Collect Files from Students panel Click the radio button by Special Folder Select Student Documents (%MyDocuments%\LanSchool Files) from the drop down options. Collect from - Type in the file name or wildcards can be used (*.doc, *.docx, *xls,.xlsx etc) if you use wild cards you will get all of the required file type. Browse to select destination folder Add or remove the ticks from Click Collect Files the Status box will show the progress Click Finished Wildcards - shortcut filenames that can be used when the name of the file is unknown. For example - if you are looking for a Word document type *.doc, the asterix is a way of saying anything followed by the file type, so *.doc mean anything that has the file type.doc a word 2003 document 2003 File Types =.doc - Word,.xls - Excel 2007 & 2010 File Types =.docx - Word,.xlsx - Excel Removing Student screens from class Administer Remove Selected Students From Class disconnects student and fades out their screen in classroom display Administer Add Selected Student Back into Class Reconnect student and return the screen to normal Preferences Allows the teacher to set various preferences, these include Teacher and Student preferences Web Limiting, Application Limiting, Drive Limiting Keystroke Alerts Network 16

5. View Menu The View Menu allows the teacher to identify the way LanSchool displays the student screens on the Teacher Console display, by adjusting the thumbnail size and layout. It is also possible to configure the toolbar and screen feed. View Thumbnail provides the teacher with additional options with regard to how they display the student screen on the Teacher Console. View Screen Feed gives a full size thumbnail display of the selected students screen in a slideshow format, refreshing to the next student after about 4 seconds. View Status Window Displays information on all current LanSchool traffic for that class, so that any unauthorized activities by a student can be identified and dealt with. View Configure Toolbar (Customise Toolbar) allows the teacher to customise the toolbar to their preference. Icon buttons can be added, removed and ordered. The Toolbar can be reset to the default toolbar by clicking the Reset button. It is also possible to Configure the Toolbar by holding down the Alt key and then clicking on the button you want to move, dragging and dropping it to a new location on toolbar or off the toolbar if you want to remove it. 17

6. Help Menu The Help menu in LanSchool contains many options to help you get the best out of using LanSchool. Help LanSchool On The Web contains a range of useful LanSchool resources including Video tutorials and links to the LanSchool documentation. Help LanSchool on the Web LanSchool Products will take you to the LanSchool Website. or the website is http://www.lanschool.com/ Help LanSchool on the Web LanSchool Tutorials - there are over 20 how to video tutorials to help you. Some of the topics covered are: Communication Features Sending and Collecting Files Testing Voting There are also a few how to tutorials Help LanSchool on the Web User s Guide - a comprehensive guide to using LanSchool, available in a range of languages. Hints and Tips Here are some useful hints and tips for using LanSchool. Selecting Students Left mouse click: Deselecting a Student: Ctrl = a: Select a student (this toggles the selection on and off, when viewing thumbnails) To deselect a student click in the blank are of the console Selects all Students F5: Refresh Student list Selected only: In thumbnail view, it is possible to watch just those machines that have been selected. Click on the down arrow by the View All button the click on Selected only. Managing Students Right Mouse Click: Ctrl + Alt + L: Displays a reduced menu for that Student To display the LanSchool tray menu Implied Selection Many of the common tasks such as Blank Students Screen and Show Teachers Screens are performed on selected Students. However, for these common tasks, if no students are selected Lanschool will assume that the task is for ALL Students. For example clicking Blank Students Screen with no students selected will blank all the Students screens. 19
