Exova BM TRADA s timber grading courses provide candidates with the necessary skills and understanding for grading timber to the required standards. They are practical courses and range from 2-5 days. By attending a timber grading course you can: grade and assess your own stock, adding value and enhancing profits check and confirm that the graded timber you have purchased is in accordance with the contract re-grade machined timber, saving you money and time provide your clients with better knowledge and understanding. VISUAL STRENGTH GRADING SOFTWOOD A practical five-day course to grade softwood to the visual strength grades set out in BS 4978: 2007+A1:2011 Visual Strength grading of softwood. 5 days 1190 + VAT 1070 + VAT (TRADA Members) 8-12 February 25-29 April 27 June - 1 July 26-30 September 14-18 November Anyone involved in the selection and supply of softwood for structural use. Day 1 - is classroom-based interactive learning. The morning comprises an introduction to timber, including the uses of strength graded timber, the meanings of the strength classes, an explanation of strength grading and the marking systems for strength graded timber. Next is an introduction to the natural growth characteristics of wood using hand held samples to illustrate features, such as knots and grain. Delegates will learn how to draw knot plots, measure knot areas and learn about the responsibilities of the grader and the grading company. Day 2 & 3 - are practical days spent in the timber yard. Delegates will grade long length timber samples under close supervision of Exova BM TRADA s experienced trainers. Delegates will utilise their new skills to assess the knot area ratio (KAR), grain direction, wane, decay and insect damage. During the two days delegates will learn about the interpretation of General Structural (GS) and Special Structural (SS) grading rules and learn how to grade the timber through practical exercises. Delegates will also learn how to recognise timber species through practical exercises. Day 4 - provides an overview of days 1-3 giving the delegates a chance to ask further questions where necessary. This is followed by a mock exam to help delegates prepare for the final exam. Day 5 - this is the day of the formal VSG exam. The final exam is practical-based. VISUAL STRENGTH GRADING REFRESHER COURSE SOFTWOOD VISUAL STRENGTH GRADING HARDWOOD TEMPERATE & TROPICAL A two-day refresher course aimed at graders whose registration has lapsed for 2 years or more. This provides an overview of the subject and takes place in the last two days of the softwood course. 2 days 352 + VAT 320 + VAT (TRADA Members) 11-12 February 28-29 April 30 June - 1 July 29-30 September 17-18 November Graders whose registration to the Exova BM TRADA VSG Scheme has lapsed for 2 years or more. Day 1 - provides an overview of days 1-3 of the softwood course giving delegates a chance to refresh their grading knowledge and ask questions where necessary. This is followed by a mock exam to help delegates prepare for the final exam. The mock and final exams are practical-based. Day 2 - this is the day of the formal VSG exam. The final exam is practical-based. A practical threeday course to grade hardwood to the visual strength grades set out in BS 5756: 2007+A1:2011 Specification for visual grading of hardwood. 3 days 712 + VAT 625 + VAT (TRADA Members) 13-15 July 9-11 November Anyone involved in the selection and supply of hardwood for structural use. Venue: Exova BM TRADA, High Wycombe, HP14 4ND. Day 1 - the morning comprises an introduction to timber, including the uses of strength graded timber, the meanings of the strength classes, an explanation of strength grading, and the marking systems for strength graded timber. In the afternoon the graders will gain practical experience grading lengths of hardwood grades TH1 & TH2 under the close supervision of Exova BM TRADA s experienced trainers. Day 2 - is a practical day. Delegates will gain experience grading to THA, THB and HS grades. There are opportunities for delegates to ask further questions where necessary in preparation for the final exam. Day 3 - this is the day of the formal VSG exam. The final exam is practical-based. SCAFFOLD BOARD GRADING INSPECTION OF USED SCAFFOLD BOARDS A practical three-day course to grade scaffold boards set out in BS 2482:2009 specification for timber scaffold boards. 3 days 590 + VAT 550 + VAT (TRADA Members) 19-21 October Anyone who wishes to grade, band and issue new scaffold boards. Day 1 the morning comprises an introduction to timber, including the uses of timber in structural applications, an explanation of strength grading, and the marking systems for scaffold board. Delegates will also learn about the responsibilities of the grader. Next is an introduction to the natural growth characteristics of wood, such as knots and grain and how and why these potentially reduce the strength of timber. In the afternoon delegates will gain practical experience grading scaffold boards under the close supervisions of Exova BM TRADA s experienced trainers. Day 2 is a practical day. Delegates will gain experience grading scaffold boards. Whilst grading they will learn about the dimensions and tolerances of scaffold boards as well as the correct storage methods when on-site. Day 3 the day of the formal exam. The final exam is practicalbased. A one-day course designed to address the needs of scaffolding companies and scaffolding contractors who will be expected to inspect and assess the condition of previously used scaffold boards. This course provides delegates with an understanding of the grading rules, provide advice on how to store boards correctly and assess whether used boards should be re-issued or withdrawn from use.
