4 The programme outline: Introduction and Section 1 Introduction (10 minutes) Timber in Buildings If you re selling timber, you need to know the names and functions of the different timber elements in a building, from firrings to purlins. This introduction uses an animated house to show you what each element is used for and what it s called. Section 1. Wood: The Sustainable Building Material (Two hours) Timber and the environment This module, a combination of videos and animations, will give you an understanding of timber s importance as the most environmentally-friendly building material available and its role in low carbon construction. You will learn about Europe s sustainably-managed forests, certification schemes, Chain of Custody and CE marking. Trees and their structure This module will give you an understanding of the differences between hardwood and softwood trees, of the tree s overall structure, the importance of cell growth and why the various kinds of knot occur. Timber harvesting This module, a combination of videos and animations, will give you an understanding of the main regions our imported softwood comes from, and of harvesting methods and techniques. 4

5 The programme outline: Section 2 Section 2. Understanding Timber Products (Three and a half hours) Conversion and sizing Videos and animations covering the conversion of timber, sawing methods, such as Cant, Quarter, Plain, Through and Through and Wainscot, trade sizes and stock lengths. Commercial grading Videos and animations covering the grading systems, qualities and usage, as well as timber s principal defects. Moisture in timber Covers the moisture content of green wood, how to calculate moisture content, matching moisture content to end use, how to check moisture content, air and kiln-drying, shrinkage, defects caused by drying, and case hardening. Strength grading Covers visual and machine grading, understanding grade stamps and looking at the defects that affect grading. Wood preservation Provides an understanding of the different properties of heartwood and sapwood, when preservative treatment is required and the different types in commercial use. Explains British Standard Use Classes so that you will know the correct Use Class for each different type of timber application. 5

Products and Sizing (Two and a half hours) Carcassing and joinery timber Covers the names for different construction elements, uses outside construction, CLS and Scant, nominal and finished sizes, and other terminology. Mouldings and profiles Videos and animations covering the main types of profiles and mouldings, cladding and flooring. Sheet materials Covers the main wood-based sheet materials, their applications and compliance with British Standards for structural use. Fixings Covers the main ways of fixing timber, such as dowel-type fasteners, two and threedimensional connector plates and suitable materials. Predictability in fire Covers timber s predictable burn and char rates, requirements for fire doors and the relevant Building Regulations. 6

7 The programme outline: Section 4, assessment and certificate Section 4. Working in the Merchant Environment (Five and a half hours) Calculating sizes Explains how different types of timber are sold and provides simple formulas for calculating the running metres, volume and number of pieces in a pack. Stock maintenance Provides advice on how to store and display timber stock, reduce waste and improve profits. Successful selling Follow this simple advice to improve your selling skills and set you on a successful career path. Improving margins Selling is not just about shifting stock. Being able to improve margins is a key skill. Health & Safety The industry is working towards Zero accidents. Make sure you know how to keep yourself, and others about you, safe. Manual handling Timber is a heavy material. Learn the do s and don ts that will make your life easier and safer, while also protecting the product. Final Assessment and Certificate (One hour) 7
