1. General setup information This manual describes the installation for the ProfiCore PROFIBUS to USB interface for various operating systems. The next chapters assume basic knowledge of Windows operating systems. All example and dialogs are based on a US/UK based windows installation and may differ slightly based on upgrades, updates and enhancements. If the PC on which the installation is performed, please use the dialog screen captures shown in this document in conjunction with the description in order to find and press the appropriate buttons and other user interface items. Make sure that before installing the drivers or any other relating applications the following is verified or done: 1. Boot up the PC in windows in normal mode (not in safe mode). 2. Make sure that you have the appropriate cables (in this case a USB A to B cable) attached to the ProfiCore in the appropriate manner. 3. Under multi-user versions/installations of windows (like Windows XP Pro & Windows 2000 Pro) make sure you have administrator privileges. 4. Make sure you always use the latest version drivers and application software for your product. Updates can be downloaded from http://www.profibuscenter.nl 5. Use, as far as possible the latest service packs and hot fixes for your operating system. Version 1.0-26 may 2004 Page 5-19

5. Frequently asked questions This chapter has answers to frequently asked questions about ProfiCore and related matters. Question 1.1 I have USB 2.0 on my laptop/pc, does ProfiCore work on that also? Answer Yes, ProfiCore is USB V1.1 and will also work on USB 2.0 hubs and interfaces without problems 1.2 Can I connect more than 2 ProfiCore devices on one port (with a hub)? ProfiCore consumes approximately 250mA. One USB port can only supply 500mA in total. Using 2 ProfiCore devices on the same port may not work properly since it will probably exceed the 500mA USB current limit. It is therefor recommended to have each ProfiCore on it's own port. 1.3 Is ProfiCore galvanically isolated? Yes, the Profibus RS485 port is galvanically 1.4 The ProfiCore also has a RJ45 connector, what is it used for? 1.5 Can I use the ProfiCore DB9 Profibus connector also for terminating the Profibus network? isolated. The TJ45 connector is NOT an Ethernet connector, but a feature connector for extending the functionality of applications using the ProfiCore. The ProfiTrace bus analyzer application for example uses this port to generate a trigger signal for oscilloscopes. This trigger signal is used to trigger the capture for an oscilloscope exactly at the moment a particular message is detected on the bus. This simplifies bus signal quality analysis for individual stations on the bus. Yes, but be aware of the fact that when a PC (or laptop) needs to be reset or shutdown, also the power for the termination resistors is shutdown! The same occurs when removing the ProfiCore from the USB port! 1.6 Does ProfiCore support all baudrates? Yes, ProfiCore can support all baudrates up to 12Mbps, including 45.45kbps. However the application on the PC will determine the functionality (see also 1.7). 1.7 Is ProfiCore a Profibus Master or Slave? ProfiCore has all the hardware built-in for usage as either a master, slave or just for passive bus analysis. The actual functionality is determined by the application used on the PC. 6. Troubleshooting If you experience problems during installation or usage of ProfiCore, the associated tools or applications, then first make sure you have done and verified the issues as mentioned in chapter 1. Also be aware that only Windows 98, Windows XP and Windows 2000 have been tested with ProfiCore. Usage on other operating systems, may not work or not work properly, and no support can be given for it. 6.1 Driver files Problem Possible solution 1.1 I cannot find the drivers for ProfiCore On the installation CD a drivers directory is present. Please use that as reference when the operating systems asks for a driver location. 1.2 My CD is damaged or corrupted, so I cannot install the drivers anymore Check to see if the application is available as a free download on http://www.profibuscenter.nl If not, then please contact your local dealer or contact us by email: info@profibuscenter.nl 6.2 Driver problems Problem 2.1 ProfiCore is not detected by my PC / operating system. 2.2 The drivers have been installed before, but now Windows does not seem to find the correct drivers anymore. Possible solution Make sure that the cable is correctly plugged both into the PC and the ProfiCore. If this does not help, try to use another USB slot or another USB cable. It could be that Windows has a corrupted registry entry or it could be because Windows does not know which drivers to use because they have been moved or deleted. In this case go to the hardware manager and explicitly re-install the drivers. Do not let windows search for a driver, but direct windows to the driver directory and force re-installation. For Windows XP do the following steps: 1. Start 'Control Panel'. 2. Select 'Printers and other hardware'. 3. Select 'System' (on the left). 4. In the tab Hardware click on Device Manager. 5. Go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and expand. 6. Double click on item PCN ProfiCore V1.00 device. 7. In the tab Driver click on Update driver. 8. In the Welcome dialog, select option Version 1.0-26 may 2004 Page 18-19
'Install from a list or specific location (advanced)' and then click on 'Next' 9. Choose option 'Don't search, I will choose the driver to install' and then click on 'Next'. 10. Click on Have Disk. 11. Browse to the Drivers driver directory and follow the instructions in the dialogs that follow. For Windows 2000 do the following steps: 1. Start 'Settings' 'Control Panel' 2. Choose/press the 'System' icon 3. In the tab Hardware click on Device Manager. 4. Go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and expand. 5. Double click on item PCN ProfiCore V1.00 device. 6. In the tab Driver click on Update driver 7. Click Next on the Welcome dialog 8. Choose option Display a list of and click on 'Next'. 9. Click on Have Disk. 10. Browse to the Drivers driver directory and follow the instructions in the dialogs that follow. 2.3 In the hardware manager a yellow exclamation or question mark is set to the ProfiCore driver For Windows 98 it is very similar to Windows 2000 so use the Windows 2000 steps as guideline. The drivers have not been correctly installed or windows cannot find the driver. Please follow the instructions as described in 2.2 to resolve the problem 6.3 Cabling and connection problems Problem 3.1 I have a long USB cable and I have bad connections and slow communication. 3.2 I use a bus-powered USB hub and behind it a ProfiCore and some other USB peripherals and it does not seem to work properly. 3.3 I don t have any more free USB slots on my PC or laptop Possible solution ProfiCore has been tested and positively verified to work with a USB cable of 3 meters (approx. 9 feet) or shorter. Use only good quality 3 meter (or smaller) cables. ProfiCore consumes approximately 250mA. One USB port can only supply 500mA in total. If other devices are on the same port this 500mA limit can be exceeded. Use either an externally powered USB hub or only use one USB device on each HUB. Either remove any unused USB peripherals from the PC or use an externally powered USB hub If that is not possible, an expansion card (PCI or PCMCIA) can be used to extend the number of USB ports.
