1 Windows 98 USB TROUBLESHOOTING REFERENCE Last Updated 05/30/00 If you encounter problems with a USB device not being recognized, or drivers not being found in Windows 98 on your Notebook, the following reference information may assist you in uncovering the problem. Most likely there is an incomplete setup of the USB driver support on your notebook. All drivers are included in Windows 98, but it is up to the Notebook OEMs to have them pre-installed and working. This is not intended to be step by step installation guide, but rather a reference document written with the assumption that you are familiar with Windows 98, moving or copying files, working with Device Manager and even reading keys in the Registry. Please read through the document completely before proceeding with any troubleshooting and if any of the information is unclear consult either your IT help desk or your notebook manufacturer for Windows 98 assistance. VERIFY USB PORT/CONTROLLER CONFIGURATION Before any USB device will function, your Notebook s USB controller and port need to have the proper drivers installed and working. The information below will assist you in checking that they are installed and operating. Check the Device Manager by following these steps: 1. Click on START SETTINGS CONTROL PANEL. 2. Double-click the System icon. 3. Click on the Device Manager tab and look under the USB (Universal Serial Bus) section for two devices called USB Root Hub and USB Composite Device. 4. If you have either of these devices, highlight the first one and click Remove. 5. Then click Yes. 6. Do the same for the other device if present. After restarting, the system will reinstall both devices properly. The USB section will normally have the Intel 82371SB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub, as well as any other additional devices that are currently plugged in. These two devices must be listed and must not have any question (?) marks or exclamation (!) points on them for USB to function. To the left shows Device Manager with both of the devices active and no errors.

2 If you look in properties under each device: Intel 82371SB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub you will find the driver listings. Below is what you should be seeing (note: if your controller is not the Universal Host Controller the listing will be slightly different). If your USB controller in Windows 98 is configured correctly, then it is time to look at the HID and USB device setup and drivers in Windows 98. If the above is not clear or doesn t even closely resemble your Notebook s Windows 98 USB installation, please contact your notebook manufacturer for additional assistance with getting the Windows 98 drivers in place for USB support. USB Mouse CONFIGURATION: When it is detected and installed correctly, the following drivers will be copied into their folders and the registry will be updated. The latest version for the HID and the Mouse drivers are These are from Windows 98 Second Edition Windows 98 1 st edition drivers will have the same name, just probably a different version reference. The version can be verified by locating one of the files and checking its properties. 3 So when all is installed the Device Manager in Windows 98 will show: There will be a Mouse node with a Genius USB Wheel Mouse. NOTE: other MOUSE listings will vary depending on your notebook s configuration. This screen shows the USB drivers loaded for the HID devices. These Windows 98 files all should be provided from your Notebook manufacturer or if you purchased the Windows 98 retail upgrade they will be in the CABS on the CD (or c:\windows\options\cabs folder). If you are unable to locate the files when the mouse is detected and performing the install, please double check your install steps with the below. This documents the Windows 98 installation of the USB Mobile Mini Mouse.

4 USB MOUSE DETECTION AND INSTALL STEPS: When the Mouse is connected for the first time, you should see a screen with New Hardware Found and the name Genius USB Mouse. If this does not appear then you can not proceed. If it does not appear there are several possible reasons: (1) The mouse has been previously installed (2) the mouse is defective, (3) the USB controller is not installed (4) the USB port is defective. In case #1, the mouse should be recognized an functinal. For #2, try attaching the mouse to another USB port on a computer that you know does work (if possible). For #3 and #4, refer to the USB controller info above and contact your notebook manufacturer for additional troubleshooting. After the New Hardware Found, the next screen will be Add New Hardware Wizard. If the mouse was detected correctly, the wizard will search for a USB Human Interface Device. Click Next to continue. At this point it will be looking for the HIDDEV.INF file in the CABS folder Click Next to Continue Click Next to Continue If the INF file is located it will display this screen. Click Next to Continue.

5 Sometimes it ll be unable to locate the file where it expects it and will request that you insert the Windows 98 CD. If prompted to, place the Windows 98 CD in your CD-ROM and click OK. Once completed you will see this screen. Click Finish to complete the installation. Your device manager should now reflect the necessary drivers and the mouse should operate correctly. WHAT THE REGISTRY MAY LOOK LIKE In some cases, if there was a problem during the initial install the USB mouse may be install incompletely. In order to get Windows 98 to go through the Add New Hardware Wizard again on the USB device, the registry keys that are in place need to be deleted. The following will show you where to look in the registry for these keys. When the registry is modified for the USB mouse, there is a HID branch with a HID device node. Locate the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\HID, double click on it and there will be a sub branch listed starting with VID. You can use the screen shot as a reference. The device may not be exactly as above since Windows 98 serializes the USB devices. If you have connected other USB Mice there will be multiple VID devices listed as Mice, but if is the only one you ve connected, then this is the one you will remove. Move your cursor to the VID branch under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\HID and hit Delete to remove the device node.
