IRSO 2016 - First Information 8 th April 2016 Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to provide you with details of the 29 th International Research Ship Operators (IRSO) meeting, which will be hosted by the National Research Council of Italy in the International Center for culture and higher education for scientific research in Anacapri (Island of Capri, Italy), 10-13 October 2016. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The International Research Ship Operators (IRSO) organization was founded in 1986 and its annual meeting involves of managers of ocean research ship fleets for the purpose of discussing topics and sharing information of mutual interest. This includes discussions on new research vessels, marine scientific equipment, ship systems, marine operations, changing scientific requirements, scheduling, manning, training, classifications, regulations, certifications, as well as insurance, vessel barters, and lessons learned. The meeting is held each year at one of the member countries. IRSO minutes, news, and other information can be found at the website: www.irso.info. HOSTING INSTITUTION The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) is the largest Italian public research institution, the only one under the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research performing multidisciplinary activities. Its mission is to carry out, promote and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development and internationalization of the Country. The CNR Central Management for Planning and Infrastructure manages the main CNR Research Vessels; it is also in charge of the management of the oceanographic observation system of platforms, buoys and long-term mooring stations, and it coordinates national and international cooperation with other organizations. 1

MEETING VENUE The meeting venue, owned by National Research Council of Italy, is the International Center for culture and higher education for scientific research in Anacapri (Island of Capri, Via Fraita, 40 33.088 N 14 12.820 E), set in 200 ha of peaceful land and composed of five distinct buildings, each offering self-contained conference facilities. The Island of Capri, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the south side of the Gulf of Naples, is one of the most picturesque and visited locations in Italy, a celebrated beauty spot and a coastal resort since the Roman Republic until now. Capri Island has two municipalities: the town of Capri, which is the island s main population centre with two harbours, Marina Piccola and Marina Grande (the main port), the famous Faraglioni, the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas and the separate municipality of Anacapri, located high on the hills to the west. The International Center for culture and higher education for scientific research is situated about 250 metres above the sea level near Monte Solaro and it was built at the end of 1960 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science. The structures were the place of a small Institute devoted to astrophysics research and worked as solar observatory until 1978. In 1982 the Academy sold the property to the National Research Council of Italy, that has re-designed the structures, creating a superb combination of well-equipped meeting rooms and training rooms, managed by an experienced events team who understand the needs of organisers, delegates and trainers. The International Center has many facilities, which can offer several alternatives and options to better organize the meeting. It benefits from 4 main conference rooms of varying sizes with a maximum capacity of 65 delegates in each. In addition, a combination of 3 small meeting rooms, ideal for smaller meetings or break-out sessions, can accommodate more than 50 delegates. All meeting rooms benefit from climate control, Wifi access, projector, whiteboards, laptops, telephone points and Tv/Dvd/Vhs players. 29 TH IRSO MEETING PROGRAMME The meeting agenda is still under development and will include an Ice Breaker reception on the evening of Monday 10 th October, three days of formal meeting (from 11 th to 13 th October), the IRSO conference dinner on the evening of Wednesday 12 th October and tours and special events. It is also planned to have an industry event held in co-operation with the Eurofleets2 project on Monday 10 th October. This event will comprise of a small exhibition space for invited companies and a short workshop outlining some of the outputs from the project to interested IRSO members and to Industry invitees. TRAVEL TO CAPRI There are two options for Air access: one is to fly into one of the two Rome Airports or directly to Naples International Airport. Getting to Naples from Rome takes at least three hours if you are lucky with your connections...otherwise, the trip can take up to half a day! If you are arriving in late afternoon in Rome, consider staying overnight in either Rome or Naples. From Rome Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, take the Leonardo Express shuttle train 1 to the Roma Termini central train station, and from here transfer to a train for Naples 2. From Rome Ciampino Airport, take the bus to the Roma Termini train station 3 and then the train to Naples. 1 http://www.trenitalia.com/ 2 http://www.trenitalia.com/ or http://www.italotreno.it/ 3 http://www.romeairportbus.com/ 5

In Naples, there are two Terminals from which ferries to Capri depart: Molo Beverello (Terminal Aliscafi) and Calata di Massa (Terminal Traghetti). Molo Beverello is located in front of Maschio Angioino in Piazza Municipio, while the Calata di Massa pier is located further east (to the left, facing the sea). High speed ferries 4 (50 minutes) depart from Molo Beverello, and ferries (60 minutes) and slow ferries 5 (90 minutes) from Calata di Massa. Ferries and slow ferries are more economical and slower than high speed ferries and are the only vessels which can embark motor vehicles. Schedules and prices change often: check again the day before your travel dates or contact the ferry companies directly, especially in case of rough seas! (When seas are very rough, high speed ferries are often suspended and only ferries and slow ferries continue to run). 4 http://www.navlib.it/ita/index.asp or http://www.snav.it/ 5 http://www.caremar.it/index.php/it/ 6

Getting to the Molo Beverello from the Naples International Airport: Bus - As soon as you leave the terminal, you ll find the stop for the Alibus, which goes to the center of Naples, Piazza Municipio, a three-minute walk to the Molo Beverello pier. You can purchase ticket directly from the driver. Taxi - the taxi stand is located at the exit of the terminal. Request the fixed fare for the port. Getting to the Molo Beverello from the Naples Central Train Station: Taxi - the taxi stand is located at the exit of the station. Request the fixed fare for the port. Metro (Linea M1) - The stop is Municipio (near Maschio Angioino), one of the new Art Stations of Naples Metro. You can purchase ticket in the station. Once you ve arrived on Capri, the first thing we suggest you to do is dropping off your bags with one of the porter services on the pier. If your hotel is in Capri, we recommend having the luggage porter service transport your bags directly to your room. To reach the Piazzetta (center of life on the island), you can take the funicular or one of Capri s open-top taxis. If your hotel is located in Anacapri, you should take a taxi with your bags. Otherwise, above the funicular ticket window, you ll find the stop for bus routes to Anacapri, which run often. Another solution is to take the funicular and then the Capri-Anacapri bus. Most of the hotels on Capri and Anacapri offer free or economic shuttle services between the port and the hotel: inquire directly with your hotel. VISAS Participants are encouraged to check with their travel agencies and embassy for details on Passports or Visa requirements. Please check the website of the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry in the section http://vistoperitalia.esteri.it/home/en. If you need a formal letter of invitation from the meeting organizers as part of a visa application, please contact the Organizing Committee meeting as soon as possible (see below). Should you need any help or more information for your stay in Capri, please contact: irso2016italycnr@gmail.com.
