Introduction This document will guide you through the installation and configuration of the linksys wireless router. It is designed to help configure the router so it both works with the RPI network, and is secure. Why is this important? Without configuring the router so that it works correctly with the RPI network you may cause other people to lose their network connection. When this occurs, your network port will be disabled, and you will need to take corrective action to resolve the problem before your connection is restored. Also, if your wireless router is not secure, anyone who has a wireless card can access the Internet through your router. If they are involved in any illegitimate activities that can be traced back to your router, and you may be held responsible. Initial Setup Plug the WAN port of the router into the network port on your wall. This should be the port all the way on the left next to the reset button (see image below) Plug your laptop into one of the ports labeled 1-4 Plug the router power into the wall and router Power on your laptop, or if it is on, renew your IP address. If you have questions about renewing your IP address consult the Helpdesk website (http://www.rpi.edu/computing/, and click Help Desk) and follow the instructions for your operating system Detach the Wireless Configuration Checklist and Information Sheet, page 22 of this document, and as you are completing the installation check items off in the checklist and fill out the Information Sheet Logging In Open your favorite web browser and go to: http://192.168.1.1 Username is left empty Type admin under Password Click OK Page 3 of 22

Setup Leave Host Name empty Leave Domain Name empty Change the last two numbers in the Device IP Address to two numbers of your choosing, they must be between 1 and 254. This will set the IP address that you enter in your web browser to log into the router and change its configuration. In the example below I used 1 and 12. Select Enable under wireless, and Type your RCS userid or dorm and room as the SSID (ie: damona or nason106). This is the name of your wireless network, write this down you will need it to connect through wireless on your router. If you will not be using wireless, Select Disable. Select NO under Allow Broadcast SSID to Associate Select the Channel that you would like to use and write it on the Information Sheet, in the example, Channel 3 is used. See the section below on Choosing an Optimal Wireless Channel for more information. Select Mandatory under the WEP Key, and Click WEP Key Settings : Page 4 of 22

WEP Key Settings Under Passphrase Type any random number/letter combination that you would like and Press Generate This will generate four WEP Keys, WEP stands for Wireless Encryption Protocol and is used to encrypt wireless connections to keep your connection secure. Write Down Key 1 you will need this when setting up a laptop to connect to your wireless network. You will need to use the cursor to scroll though the entire key to copy it down. Double check your key, and make sure it is 13 characters long. Click Apply WAN Connection Type Your two options for connection types Static and DHCP. By default all computers use DHCP to connect to the RPI Network. We recommend that you setup your router to use DHCP. However if you would like to run any type of server you will need to request a Static IP address. When you receive your static IP, you will then change the configuration from DHCP to Static. The form for requesting a Static IP Address is available at the VCC Help Desk and is also available online from the Computing website (http://www.rpi.edu/computing) Click Forms, and then Click on RESNet Static IP Request. For more information about the difference between Static and DHCP is available from the Help Desk Website, which is linked from http://www.rpi.edu/computing. Page 5 of 22

DCHP Address Setup If you are configuring your router for an Static IP Address, skip this step Under WAN Connection Type, Select Obtain an IP automatically Click Apply Static IP Address Setup If your router is configured for DHCP, skip this step After filling out a Static IP requests and submitting it to the helpdesk you will receive an email with all the information you need. Under Host Name Type your userid Under Domain Name Type stu.rpi.edu Under WAN IP Address Type the IP Address you received in the email Under Subnet Mask Type the Subnet you received in the email Under Default Gateway Type the Default Gateway you received in the email Under DNS Type BOTH the DNS Servers you received in the email Click Apply *** The DNS Settings are the same campus wide, however the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway are specific for different locations on campus, make sure you enter the Subnet Mask and Gateway that you received from the hostmaster *** Page 6 of 22

Choosing an Optimal Wireless Channel (optional) There are many different wireless devices that we use every day, and others that are not wireless devices but can interfere with the wireless signal. You can pick a wireless channel at random, however you may be able to increase your wireless signal by choosing a different channel. The first option is to check with other people in your dorm to see if they are running wireless routers. Find out what channel they are using, then pick a channel as far away as possible. If you have a Orinoco Wireless card, the Client Manager Software will scan the network and display a list of the currently available networks and the channel they are using. Run the Orinoco Client Manager, by default it is installed under the Orinoco folder on the start menu. Click the Advanced menu and Select Site Monitor. The Site Monitor Window will now come up. As you can see from the diagram below, the only wireless station that was available at the Help Desk was rpi.edu, which runs on channel 11. So I would pick one of the first 2-3 channels. This feature is not available with the build in Windows Wireless Manager. Both Windows 2000 and Windows XP will allow you to scan for available networks, but does not list the channel those networks broadcast on. Page 7 of 22

Password Settings Click the Password tab on the Navigation Bar Enter a new password, this should be a simple password that you don t mind your roommate or friends knowing, DO NOT use you re RCS, aim, email, or other personal password. Write this password down Select Disable under UPnP Services Select NO under Restore Factory Defaults Click Apply Router Status Click the Status tab on the Navigation Bar Write down the LAN MAC Address Write down the WAN MAC Address Page 8 of 22

DHCP Settings Click the DHCP tab on the Navigation Bar This sets up the internal DHCP Server on your wireless network. This in turn will give wireless and wired users IP Address. Select Enable under the DHCP Server Type 100 under the Starting IP Address Type 10 under the Number of DHCP Users, you can set this to more of less if you would like, but having more than 10 users may degrade performance. Type 0 under the Client Lease Time, this will lease an IP Address for one day, Under DNS 1 Type 128.113.26.77 Under DNS 2 Type 128.113.28.67 Under WINS Type 128.113.172.123 Click Apply Page 9 of 22

Active DHCP Table (optional) Click the DCHP Clients Table This table will let you know all the computers that are connected to your network, by Name, IP Address, MAC Address, and Interface type (wired or wireless) This can be useful when settings up some advanced features such as MAC Address filtering and Forwarding After looking at the table, close the window Log (optional) Click the Log tab on the Navigation Bar This setting can be used to send the logs to a specific computer. By default it is set to broadcast the logs to everyone on your network. However in order to view them the client must be configured. For most users this can be left alone, however, if you would like to setup a computer to receive all of the access logs consult the Linksys manual. Page 10 of 22

Security (optional) Click the Security tab under the Navigation Bar This tab can be used to integrate both a personal firewall and an anti-virus program with your Linksys router. If you would like to include any of these features consult the documentation that came with your router. Filters Click the Advanced tab under the Navigation Bar The Filtered Private IP Range will allow you to shut off Internet access for any given computer. This should be left empty The Filtered Private Port Range allows you to filter (shut off) specific ports which enable you to shut down different types of services. This should be left empty The following should be Enabled: SPI The following should be Disabled: Multicast Pass Through, IPSec Pass Through*, PPTP Pass Through, Remote Management, Remote Upgrade, and MTU The Block WAN Request can be set to Enabled or Disabled. If it is enabled you will not be able to ping your router from the network, which is necessary for troubleshooting and testing your routers connectivity. Click Apply * If you are off campus and are using VPN IPSec Pass Through must be Enabled Page 11 of 22

Port Range Forwarding (optional) Click the Forwarding tab under the Navigation Bar Port forwarding is used for running web and ftp servers If you are not running a server, Leave these empty and Continue to Port Triggering If you are running a server you will need the IP Address of the server, what service you are running (eg: web, ftp, ssh, etc), and the port that service uses. Here is a list of commonly used ports:! Port Type the port number or range. Select Protocol TCP, UDP, or Both. Under IP Address Type the IP Address of the computer Select Enable and Click Apply Page 13 of 22

Port Triggering (optional) Port Triggering can be used for programs that use a set of incoming and outgoing ports. For most users this step can be skipped. Click the Port Triggering button Under Application Name, Type the name of the executable that you are running Under Trigger Port Range, Type the outgoing ports Under Incomming Port Range, Type the incoming ports Click Apply Close the Port Triggering Window Port Triggering vs Port Forwarding (optional) Port triggering allows anyone on your network to run a given program which will connect to a server on a set of outgoing ports and then receive the incoming traffic on that port or range of ports. Port Forwarding sends all incoming traffic on a specific port to a given computer. EXAMPLE ONE PORT TRIGGERING Playing online games via a gaming server is a good example of Port Triggering. When someone on the network runs Helpdesk 3D Tetris, it will open up traffic that goes out on ports 180-182 and has incoming traffic on ports 180-190. You could set ports 180-190 to forward to the computer that you play Helpdesk 3D Tetris on, however, that will not allow your roommate to play, and it will also forward other traffic on that port to your computer, even when you are not playing Helpdesk 3D Tetris. This is a security hole. EXAMPLE TWO PORT FORWARDING Setting up a web server is a good example of port forwarding. Only one computer is going to be used for a web server, and whenever it is on, the server is running. So you can set port 80 to forward to that computer. EXAMPLE THREE DO I HAVE TO DO ANYTHING? Say that you want to use AIM, Netscape, mirc, etc. Does that mean you have to setup port forwarding or port triggering on each of the computers? No, many common programs use the same incoming and outgoing port. For example when you connect to AIM it sends a message out on port 5190, the AIM server receives information from you and send back information on port 5190. Because you initiated the request on the same port as you got information, the firewall sends the data back to you without a problem. How is this different from some other services? Some online games and other services don t use the same ports for coming and outgoing messages. They might use port 320 for incoming and 321 for outgoing. So you contact it on 321, and when the server comes back on 320, the router will drop the packet. Page 14 of 22 http://www.rpi.edu/dept/hd/docs/wifi/linksys.doc

Dynamic Routing Click the Dynamic Routing tab on the Navigation Bar Under Working Mode Select Gateway Under Dynamic Routing select Disabled for both Click Apply Static Routing (optional) Click the Static Routing tab on the Navigation Bar This section should be set correctly by default; the screen shot below is for reference only. DMZ Host (optional) Click the DMZ Host tab on the Navigation Bar This feature is used to put a computer on your network outside of your firewall. This makes your computer vulnerable to security attacks and is not recommended. However, it can be useful when troubleshooting your port triggering setup. MAC Address Clone (optional) Click the MAC Address Clone tab on the Navigation Bar This setting must be left empty. If the settings are changed the router may not work with the RPI network. If any combination of letters/numbers are set under User Defined WAN MAC Address replace them with 00, then click Apply Page 16 of 22 http://www.rpi.edu/dept/hd/docs/wifi/linksys.doc

Wireless Click the Wireless tab under the Navigation Bar Under Authentication Type select Shared Key For the remainder of the settings the defaults settings are correct Click Apply Wireless Active MAC Table (optional) If you click the Active MAC Table button, it will display a list of all the computers that are connected to your computer via Wireless. This can be used if you want to check to see who is connecting, and if your settings are all correct. Close the Active MAC Table Window Page 17 of 22 http://www.rpi.edu/dept/hd/docs/wifi/linksys.doc

Wireless MAC Entry (optional) Click on the Wireless MAC Entry button This is used to filter MAC Address which will not allow a specific computer to connect to your network. These settings should be left empty. Close the Wireless MAC Entry window Finishing Up Click the Apply button Your wireless router is now set up to work on the RPI Network. Before users connect to your wireless network, they will need the following information, both of which are on your Wireless Network Information Sheet (pg. 22) o SSID (network name) of your network o The WEP Key Before closing make sure that the Wireless Network Information sheet (pg. 22) is filled out entirely, once it has been completed attach the sheet to your wireless router. Complete the Wireless Client Installation on any computers that will be connecting to your network Additional Information If you are still having trouble please contact the VCC Help Desk at x7777 or consult@rpi.edu. Wireless Client Installation Windows 98 Before starting the installation make sure that you have the following: o The SSID (Network Name) o The WEP Key Both should be located on The Wireless Network Information Sheet which should be attached to the router. Click the Start Menu, Select Control Panel Under the Control Panel Double-Click Wireless Network Select the next available profile, and Type in a name for your network profile Click Edit Profile Under Network Name Type the SSID of the wireless network Click the Encryption Tab Check Enable Data Security Select Use Hexadecimal (0-9, a-f) Under Key 1 Type the WEP Key Click OK Click OK Page 19 of 22 http://www.rpi.edu/dept/hd/docs/wifi/linksys.doc

Wireless Client Installation Windows XP Before starting the installation make sure that you have the following: o The SSID (Network Name) o The WEP Key Both should be located on The Wireless Network Information Sheet which should be attached to the router. Click the Start Menu, Select Control Panel Under the Control Panel Double-Click Network Connections Right Click on the Wireless Connection and Select Properties The Connect to Wireless Network dialog will pop-up Click Advanced Under Preferred Networks Click Add Under Network Name Type the SSID (network name) Check Data encryption (WEP enabled) Un-Check The key is provided for me automatically Under Network Key Type your 13 character WEP Key Click OK Click OK Select your wireless network, and Click Connect Page 20 of 22 http://www.rpi.edu/dept/hd/docs/wifi/linksys.doc

Troubleshooting Unable to Connect Is the power light green? Is the WAN link Green? Is the WLAN link light active? (wireless only) Is the LAN link light for your port (1-4) green? (wired connection) Does the wired connection work? Does the laptop work if plugged into the Wall? Unplug the router, wait 30sec, and plug it back in If you plug the laptop in to a wired connection does the corresponding link light turn green? Check the WEP Key Check the SSID View the router logs Is MAC Address Filtering is enabled on your router? Re-install the network drivers on your laptop/desktop Low Wireless Signal Try changing the Channel of your wireless device Try moving the antennas position Move the device away from other electronics that may cause interference such as: microwaves, cordless phones, TV s, and stereo systems.
