L Ecole supérieure d art des Pyrénées - Pau Tarbes A french higher art school and a state institution ÉSA Pyrénées is a state institution accredited by the French ministry of Culture and Communication and the ministry of Higher Education and Research. The school welcomes about 300 students each year and prepares them for national diplomas in plastic arts, up to Master of s Degree. Unique artistic training in France In Pau, the Graphic Design and Multimedia option is the only art option in France which brings together artists and graphic designers. Its objective is to train professionals who combine artistic culture with knowledge of technical constraints. In Tarbes, the and Ceramics option provides teaching open to all forms of practice. Emphasis is placed on the ceramic medium through a technical ceramic workshop and the expertise of professional art teachers. It helps pass on highly specialized skills which are not very developed in other French art schools. Nationally and internationally recognized diplomas To be admitted to ÉSA Pyrenees, candidates must have a high school diploma and must pass an entrance examination. ÉSA Pyrénées awards 3 state-recognized diplomas, which count towards qualifications in other countries, thanks to the European Credit System. 3 years study program : DNAP (Diplôme National d s Plastiques): Bachelor of s Degree, with 2 different options from 2nd year : graphic design and multimedia in Pau, art in Pau or Tarbes. DNAT (Diplôme National d s et Techniques) : Bachelor of s Degree, object design (ceramics) option in Tarbes. 5 years study program : DNSEP : Diplôme National Supérieur d Expression Plastique, equivalent to Master of s degree, art option with 2 different specializations (graphic design and multimedia in Pau, art and ceramics in Tarbes). RESEARCH Since 2000, ÉSA Pyrénées has been developing its own research unity, the Observatoire. Recognized by the French ministry of Culture and Communication, the unit is currently working on 5 programs, exploring fields of, and Ceramics and Graphic Design and Multimedia : Sky to Sky Images de l imaginaire (Images of the Imaginary) Écrire [dans] l espace, écriture et design graphique en situation (Writing [in] Space, situational writing and graphic design) Nouvelles temporalités (New Temporalities) Design graphique & multimédia, usages et usagers à l ère numérique (Graphic Design and Multimedia, uses and users in the digital age) ists, graphic designers, theorists of art and design but also physicists, astronomers, philosophers, etc. are working as one bringing together teaching methods, production and dissemination of various forms and knowledge. In partnership with other academic bodies (University of Pau, Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, EHESS in Paris etc.), the Observatoire regularly organizes public events (exhibitions, study days, publications, conferences, etc.). Since 2012, ÉSA Pyrénées has published Échappées, which reviews each year the topics of the school s artistic research. International relations ÉSA Pyrénées actively promotes student international mobility through English courses (including preparation for the TOEIC Test of English for international communication), Spanish courses and exchange agreements. In Europe ÉSA Pyrénées is a member of the ERASMUS European mobility program, which enables 4th year students to stay at least three months in another European Higher art school and foreign students to be hosted by ÉSA Pyrénées (partner countries : Germany, Belgium, Spain, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom). Outside Europe In 2014-2015, 3 main academic and research partnerships have been developed with Indonesia (Indonesian Institute of Yogyakarta), China (Sichuan Institute of Chongqing) and Brazil (Instituto de es de l Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro UERJ). Foreign students represent about 10% of the school s population and can benefit from French lessons. With more than 15 different nationalities, ÉSA Pyrénées is a real cultural melting pot, becoming a great and dynamic laboratory of ideas and practices.
Course options and professional outcomes The art option focuses on the teaching of contemporary artistic practices, through all possible existing forms. It is an extremely demanding program which aims to provide students with an excellent knowledge of contemporary art and to help them develop high-level artistic practices. Professional outcomes : artist, cultural mediator (art centers, museums, etc.), videographer, photographer, illustrator, gallery owner, exhibition curator, art teacher, etc. and ceramic The and Ceramics option provides teaching open to all forms of practice, with emphasis on the ceramic medium. Applied research programs on ceramics are currently highly sought after by high-tech industries such as aeronautics and medicine, and these collaborations feed the school s technical practices as well. All artistic uses of the ceramic medium as well as areas where art and design interfere are food for thought on the properties of ceramics and the relevance of their use in artistic projects. Professional outcomes : Ceramic industry : artist, industrial designer, industrial creator (porcelain, stoneware, earthenware), researcher on the preservation of materials, etc. Design : designer, ceramic creator, etc. Graphic design and multimedia option This option aims to train professionals with a strong artistic culture and a good knowledge of the graphic and web designer s constraints. Graphic design can be considered as signs art within the contemporary visual environment. Its outlines are now fluctuating due to new information technologies. The teaching at ÉSA Pyrénées follows these fluctuations and focuses on the communication area - page, screen, wall, street or any other display surface whether real, virtual or augmented, fixed or in motion.
