EXECUTIVE MBA IN HOSPITALITY ADMINISTRATION

A CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE Founded in 1893, the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne is the world s premier reference in hospitality management. We are a Swiss establishment steeped in traditions as rich as those of the most venerable hotels around the world. Yet come to visit us and you will find a young, dynamic institution with ultra-modern facilities and the latest teaching in the art, management science, techniques and culture of hospitality. We select smart, passionate people and educate them to become leaders with a deep sense of social responsibility, an innovative spirit and a constant striving for excellence, rooted into the history and values of hospitality. Our unique educational approach will let you learn what excellence means in all aspects of hospitality management. We blend business and strategy courses with hands-on practical work, projects and special events designed to develop your artistic and people management skills. We have developed an active learning approach based on group work, case studies and experimentation, both on and off-campus, at school and on the job. You will experience a truly international education, with about 80 nationalities represented among our 1,800 students, and programmes offered both in English and French. No matter where in the world your career will take you, the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne s name is admired and respected. Hospitality has become an essential function in every industry. Companies understand today that their differentiation is in customer loyalty. Banks and consulting firms, for instance, come on campus to recruit our graduates because they combine financial savvy, strong customer focus, and expertise in guest relations: a rare combination! MICHEL ROCHAT, General Director, Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND Switzerland is world-renowned for its quality of life, political and economic stability, security, and well-developed infrastructure. It also provides an ideal setting to study hospitality management: The Swiss sense of hospitality is a reference for the rest of the world. The Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne is in a beautiful forested area, only 10 minutes away by car from the lively university town of Lausanne, and 50 minutes from Geneva. Golf courses, riding stables, cross-country skiing and fitness trails are within walking distance. With Europe s largest lake and the surrounding Alps nearby, the area offers unlimited possibilities for both summer and winter sports. OUR CAMPUS Our campus has been purpose-built to give you experience in all facets of a first-rate hospitality enterprise. It is run like a hotel, with accommodation, conference facilities, five different restaurants, state-of-the-art demo kitchens, a wine-tasting laboratory, as well as an auditorium and banqueting facilities. As a responsible organisation, the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne adopted an environmental policy for its infrastructures over fifteen years ago: solar panels, wind-mills and a biogas generator have all become part of the scenery at the school. There are 300 single and double studios on campus where most students choose to live during their first year. You will find an advanced technological environment for both your study and leisure time, with campus wide wireless access to the internet and to the school s electronic resources. Tennis, volleyball and basketball courts are all available, as well as a gymnasium and a fully equipped Nautilus fitness centre. You can also join the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne s sport teams which participate in local league competitions (soccer, volleyball, basketball, ice hockey, rugby, and tennis). We offer personal coaching programmes of exercise, nutrition and relaxation, as well as a wealth of activities ranging from yoga, aerobics and indoor cycling, all the way to para-gliding and martial arts.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME Our 12-month Executive MBA in Hospitality Administration builds on your previous experience to empower you with a unique combination of marketable skills for the hospitality sector. It is ideal for both career changers who wish to move into hospitality, or for career climbers already in the field who wish to fast-track their careers. The programme is highly personalised, and prepares participants for specific opportunities and niche markets offered by the hospitality industry. It attracts experienced professionals and novices, artists and scientists, thinkers and doers, all driven by a sense of expectancy and a desire for change. Career climbers will probably focus on a specific hospitality or entrepreneurial area, while career changers will want to explore the breadth of options in the hospitality sector. The programme is designed to be the common catalyst that will help each student develop the hard and soft skills needed for the next step in their professional life. We know that students are at a turning point in their life; the Executive MBA programme offers a journey of intense discovery where students learn from professors who have both strong academic experience and business acumen. INÈS GHORBAL BLAL & HILARY MURPHY, Programme Directors, Executive MBA in Hospitality Administration DR HILARY MURPHY specialises in strategic hospitality technology and e-marketing. She has a Ph.D. in the diffusion of information and communications technology, as well as extensive business experience in sales and marketing. Hilary was a consultant and researcher for Xansa and is currently working on several industry-funded projects, investigating strategic partnerships in the hospitality technology sector. She has published many technical articles in academic journals and is a frequent presenter at keynote industry conferences. DR INÈS GHORBAL BLAL teaches strategic management and investment analysis. She has a Ph.D. in strategic management from Virginia Polytechnic and specializes in the expansion of international hotel chains. Her research interests include risk assessment and risk management, hotel development, and investment analysis including the impact of strategic decisions on corporations returns. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & HOSPITALITY ORIENTATION This hospitality oriented career development stream focuses on professional and personal growth. It runs throughout the programme and is closely integrated with all the other courses. Faculty act as guides and mentors rather than lecturers, providing privileged contacts and top level introductions. They bring industry into the classroom, and get students to participate in international conferences and other events.

SEMESTER I FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY. THE ART OF HOSPITALITY This unique module provides an overall picture of the hospitality industry today, focusing on its main driving forces, key industry figures, and present challenges. Experiential learning and business analysis are closely linked through a series of hands-on workshops and team building sessions. You will benefit from direct experience in many different hospitality enterprises, through which you will find inspiration for your own hospitality concept and creative business solutions. Throughout this voyage of discovery you will be guided by an architect and designer, an entrepreneur, and a service operations specialist. You will also work in a team to propose and develop a concept for a unique service experience which will be evaluated in terms of market attractiveness and potential financial success. THE SCIENCE OF MANAGEMENT This module will help you understand and analyse the financial performance of a hospitality operation: budgeting, cash flow and cost allocation. You will learn how to evaluate assets and place a quantitative value on a business idea. You will also learn how to prepare and edit financial data, which will allow you to make informed decisions and justify a project to investors. Your toolbox will include business mapping processes, decision theory and critical path analysis, models for market research, and advanced technological tools such as web analytics. With these tools, you will be able to put your own innovative or creative concept into action. SEMESTER II STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY. STRATEGY AND CORPORATE VISION To master hospitality management, you need an understanding of the hard reality of the corporate world, and to learn how to shape the tools you have acquired to create value both for yourself and the company you work for. You will study the strategic integration method, which involves using both quantitative skills and imagination. You will also work on methods for crafting material persuasively for different stakeholders such as lenders, owners, employees, customers, shareholders and investors. INNOVATION AND LEADERSHIP By the time you reach the last part of the programme, you will be ready to consolidate your learning in a final project. You will work with our alumni and hospitality think-tank which brings together the resources of the school and the industry. THE CAREER CAPSTONE PROJECT The Executive MBA in Hospitality Administration s Career Capstone Project is a unique, customised opportunity for students to reinforce their career prospects by addressing a practical, real world challenge using the skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout their program of study, mentored by both industry professionals and academics. Students may propose their own project or collaborate with our alumni in executive positions to further develop expertise and experience in a subject of particular interest. The Career Capstone Project is designed to allow each student to dedicate a large part of their time to an area which they value, in order to achieve their career goals after graduating.

BUILDING YOUR PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS Preparing your future career begins your first day on campus. Our career centre advisors are there to support you throughout your studies, helping you make the choices that are right for you. We provide regular career workshops that will help you play to your strengths. A constant stream of distinguished speakers, company visits and networking events will give you on-going interaction with the industry. Senior students accompany faculty to many international conferences and events, thereby gaining privileged contacts and visibility. Internships and consulting mandates also offer a great spring-board for your first job. INTERNATIONAL CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne is the first stop for hospitality recruiters in search of the next generation of leaders. Every year, we welcome on-campus more than 75 companies who are eager to hire our graduates. Outside the hospitality industry, our graduates are sought after by companies looking for excellence in customer management, in particular luxury brands and world-class consulting firms. THE POWER OF OUR WORLDWIDE ALUMNI NETWORK Our alumni occupy some of the most fascinating positions in the global hospitality industry. As an Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne graduate, you will experience the power of our network of over 25,000 alumni. In addition to formal activities, events and learning opportunities taking place in dozens of locations around the world, you will be part of a lifelong support community that will provide you with an extensive source of contacts, and help you obtain your ideal job.

Remember that happiness comes from inside and that you set the tone and mood for your hotel. You are the number one role model, and your staff and managers will follow what you do much more than what you say. CHRISTOPHER NORTON, Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne graduate.
