Please recall that Dual Credit is an approved program by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for P-16 College Readiness Standards and Closing the Gaps initiative. Your participation in this program will foster a college-bound culture in the high school and create opportunities for students to get a jump start on college and degree completion. As Dual Credit Coordinator, I am excited to have expanded school district partnerships within our service area. There are eleven Independent School Districts (ISDs) in the Lee College Service area; ten of which have fully functioning high schools. Presently there are nine ISDs (totaling 11 high schools) actively participating in the program, plus a local private school. This has all contributed to a 166% increase in dual credit student enrollment since fall 2007. Diversity has also been established in the program. School district partners can now select from a wide range of course options from academic to technical curriculum. Some of our most determined and dedicated students have completed a collegiate technical certification or earned 24 transferable college credit hours at the same time that they graduated high school! This program gives our diverse student body an excellent opportunity to learn from dedicated faculty experienced in their fields. Your continued support will make this program a success over the next two-year contractual agreement. Dual Credit High school juniors and seniors may be eligible to earn college credit while they are still in high school by enrolling in college courses. As with all students in college level courses, high school students must satisfy TSI requirements and/or prerequisite requirements for the college level courses. In general, high school students can enroll in up to two courses per semester.* Unlike other admissions, dual credit students are not required to show college readiness in all three areas (reading, writing, and math), but rather for only the requirements for the course or courses they wish to take. For example, students taking English will only need to show college readiness in reading and writing since no math score is required for that class. Therefore, students will qualify for this class by either 1) meeting the TAKS exemption standard or 2) taking the reading and writing portions of the Accuplacer and scoring the necessary score. Meet with High School Counselor a. This is necessary to decide which college courses are appropriate and eligible for high school credit. 2. Complete Application to Lee College a. Apply in person at the Lee College Admissions Office in Moler Hall b. Apply online via www.applytexas.org 3. Meet with Lee College Counselor, Advisor or Dual Credit Coordinator a. Submit Supplemental Paperwork i. Official High School Transcript ii. Dual Enrollment Authorization to Release Information Form iii. Proof of college readiness exam scores 4. Test - Accuplacer Exam (if necessary) 5. Register for Classes a. See Lee College Counselor, Advisor or Dual Credit Coordinator for assistance 6. Pay Tuition/Fees a. Pay in person at the Lee College Business Office in Moler Hall b. Pay online via the student s mylc Campus account 7. Purchase Books a. Purchase books in person at the Lee College Book Store in Moler Hall b. Purchase books online via the www.lee.edu bookstore page *Exceptions to this requirement can be made for students with outstanding academic performance and must be approved by the high school principal and the chief academic officer. 6
Qualifying TAKS Scores for High School Students 11th Grade Scores Juniors who score 2200 on the exit-level (11th grade) TAKS in Math and ELA (with writing subscore of 3) are recognized as college ready and may enroll in college courses their senior year. Juniors who may meet the standard in only one area may take dual credit courses related to the area of the test they passed. The exemption based on the 11th grade TAKS scores excuses students from taking a state-mandated test while (1) enrolled in dual credit course related to the area(s) of the test they passed; and/or (2) continuing related coursework after high school. Students might have to meet additional institutional prerequisites or testing requirements. 10th Grade TAKS Scores Sophomores who score 2200 on the TAKS math and/or ELA (with writing subscore of 3) may use those scores to enroll in dual credit courses without taking a state-mandated assessment through their senior year. The exemption from the 10th grade TAKS scores only excuses students from taking a state-mandated test while enrolled in dual credit courses related to the areas(s) of the test they passed. Students might have to meet: (1) additional institutional prerequisites or testing requirements; and/or (2) performance standards on a state-mandated test to continue related coursework after high school. If the exempt standard isn t met on either section of the 10th or 11th grade TAKS, and the student wants to take college-level courses, the student must take Accuplacer or one of the other assessment instruments approved for TSI purposes. 9th Grade TAKS Scores Freshman and sophomore students, if approved for dual credit, must take the Accuplacer, PSAT, PLAN, SAT or ACT assessment and meet college level standards for their courses. TAKS taken in the 9th grade can not be used for exemption from testing. 7
TAKS Scores and Technical Coursework Beginning in the fall 2007 semester, dual credit students taking certain technical Lee College courses may use passing ELA TAKS scores (regardless of writing subscore) for placement. The minimum ELA passing score ( met standard ) is 2100. Passing the ELA portion of the TAKS test (either 10th or 11th grade) will allow enrollment in the following programs without additional testing: Drafting Technology Welding Machine Shop/Millwright Professional Office Technology Electrical Technology Computer Maintenance/Cisco Computer Applications (ITSC 1309 only) Other Testing Exemptions In addition to TAKS, students may use ACT or SAT for initial testing exemptions. These scores are state standards and may be used for testing exemptions for dual credit and testing exemption after graduation. The following are the ACT/SAT scores necessary for testing exemption: PSAT (used for dual credit only) Combined critical reading (verbal) and mathematics score of 107 with a minimum score of 50 on both the verbal and the mathematics tests. Scores only to be used for dual credit taken during the student s junior year. An eligible high school student who has enrolled under this provision must demonstrate eligibility to enroll in dual credit in twelfth grade. PLAN (used for dual credit only) Composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on both the English and the mathematics test. (Scores only to be used for dual credit taken during the student s junior year.) An eligible high school student who has enrolled under this provision must demonstrate eligibility to enroll in dual credit in twelfth grade. ACT Composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on both the English and the mathematics test. SAT Combined critical reading (verbal) and mathematics score of 1070 with a minimum score of 500 on both the verbal and the mathematics tests. Partial Exemptions: Students may mix and match scores to show exemptions across the three areas of reading, writing, and math. Students may receive partial exemptions based on the above standards on the SAT, ACT, as well as the TAKS assessments. 8
Accuplacer Testing Information For students needing to test, Lee College offers the Accuplacer. As one of the state approved test for college readiness, the Accuplacer is a computerized test measuring levels of reading, writing, and math. Minimal computer skills are needed to complete the test. The Accuplacer is available most days the Counseling Center is open, and the results are automatic. Students are encouraged to make an appointment for the testing. Walk-ins may test only if there are testing stations available. Occasionally, testing can be done remotely at the high school campus. Since it s an internet based assessment, a computer lab with internet access will allow access to the testing. Either a proctor from the college can assist with the testing, or a designated administrator of the high school can be appointed to proctor the test. Accuplacer Testing Fees Testing fees are not due at the time of testing but are added to the students tuition and fees. Students may retest once during the registration period. Reading $5 Sentence Skills $5 Essay $10 Math $10 Dual Credit and Developmental Coursework Remedial and developmental courses may not be offered for dual credit. High School students may take developmental coursework only if they have met TAKS standards for the exit level TAKS test. 9
Dual Credit Tuition and Fees Reduction of Fees for Dual Credit Students Tuition reductions are pending board approval per each academic year. The tuition reduction will be given to all co-enrolled students. These students will pay ½ of the tuition, ½ student services fee, and ½ registration fee. The building use fee is waived. They will pay full fees for lab/course fees (if applicable) and distance education fees. This reduction is only for long semesters(fall and spring). The reduction is not available for summer semesters. The reduction is only applicable up to 8 credit hours. Full rates will be charged for credit hours in excess of the first 8 hours. The tuition reduction will be calculated for all students if they have a HS student group. PeopleSoft will not calculate the reduction for students taking more than 8 hours. For these students, the business office will calculate the reduction manually. Procedure for Billing Arrangements Occasionally, districts will pay for dual credit classes. To assure proper payment, the business office requires: A list of all students taking courses. The billing address and contact information of the school. Automatic Payment Plan Students may elect to make installment payments through a credit or debit card. $25 payment plan enrollment fee per semester (non-refundable) $2 full payment processing fee (if paying entire amount online) $25 returned payment fee if the payment is returned Payment plans are set up through the student s mylc campus accounts (under account inquiry ). Financial Aid High School dual credit students are not eligible for FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), but they can apply for state funds through TASFA (Texas Application for State Financial Aid). Core Curricula The primary purpose of the AA, AS and AA T degrees are to prepare students to transfer and meet prerequisites for junior level courses. The core curriculum is an essential, state mandated component of these associate degrees. The following three tables provide course options to meet the general core curriculum requirements and matches those listed for the Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS) and Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degrees. Subsequent degrees, Fields of Study and Areas of Concentration provide specific modifications to the core curriculum that meet the needs of students transferring in academic concentrations. A course can only be counted once in meeting core curriculum requirements. Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) Lee College offers one Associate of Arts degrees based on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Field of Study curriculum. The AAT provides four tracks in which a student can follow. Upon completion of this degree, students will have enough hours to seek employment as a childcare worker, paraprofessional or substitute teacher.
