create your own adventure Between Clermont & Mackay

CREATE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE ALONG THE MINING TRAIL The Mining Trail of Mackay Isaac region in Queensland spans some 300 km between Clermont and Mackay / Hay Point on the coast. It follows the passage of coal from our mines in the Bowen Basin, to the place of export to our overseas customers. A tourist route less travelled, the route will introduce you to wide, beautiful landscapes, historic towns, vibrant mining communities, impressive man-made works, and the friendly folk of our prosperous hinterland. We urge you take a few days to and enjoy this very special part of Australia. HISTORIC CLERMONT DISCOVER OUR AWESOME MINING INDUSTRY This was the first inland settlements in the tropics and consequently one of the most historic towns of northern Australia. It has a colourful past rich in drama and laced with tragedy and is a frontier town in the truest sense. Soon after 1861, payable gold was found in the area, and the first miners pitched camp alongside Hood s Lagoon. Among Clermont s new prosperity are the remnants and reminders of earlier times gold rushes, floods, copper mining booms, timbergetters and shearers, stockmen and squatters. Call 4983 4755 for general information. Escorted Mine Tours are possible from Clermont or Moranbah. The Blair Athol Mine Tours operate every Tuesday and Friday from Clermont Visitor Information Centre at 8.45am. The tour includes a visit to Blair Athol Mine and Clermont attractions such as historic Copperfield. A small fee is charged for entry into the Museum and included morning tea. Bookings are essential tel 4983 3292 or 4983 4755. Peak Downs mine is approximately 40km from Moranbah and morning tours depart on the last Wednesday of each month from the Isaac Regional Council office. Bookings are essential tel 4941 4500. WET A LINE AT THERESA CREEK DAM Theresa Creek Dam is located approximately 20km south-west of Clermont and is an idyllic recreation area (shared by plenty of native wildlife) offering camping sites for a nominal fee. Dam facilities include toilets, hot shower, picnic tables, barbeques and swimming areas. Take to the water by motor boat or skis. You can fish from the shore, or launch your own tinnie to catch golden perch, jewfish, barramundi, silver perch and/ or red-claw. To fish at Theresa Creek Dam you ll need a Stocked Impoundment Permit (except for red-claw), which covers all dams in Queensland. Call 4983 2327 for site bookings and information. MORANBAH NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Moranbah was created in 1971 to house employees of Goonyella and Peak Downs mine. The town is well equipped with modern facilities, great shopping, excellent coffee shops and dining, to serve residents and travellers. Moranbah s newly refurbished town centre includes an interesting water feature, a child s play area with interactive musical instruments, a model of an open cut mine in the foyer of the Isaac Regional Council office and the Coalface Gallery featuring local and visiting artists works. TRY GOLD FOSSICKING The Clermont district still has quantities of this precious metal awaiting treasure seekers. Many fine nuggets have been found in recent years by people using gold detectors. Afternoon get-togethers at the Clermont Caravan Park during peak season provide travellers with an opportunity to swap their Treasure - hunting stories. To legally fossick, a license and fossicking kit must be purchased - from Clermont Detectors, or the Clermont Caravan Park fossicking equipment such as metal detectors may also be hired. Call Clermont Detectors tel 4983 2002.

STEP INTO HISTORY AT NEBO Nebo is the centre of a wealthy beef cattle industry, as well as an important coal mining service centre. Formerly the Fort Cooper Hotel (named after the fortress-like landmark nearby), Nebo s heritage-listed hotel has been overlooking Nebo Creek since 1862. It retains great character and is well worth a visit to soak up the history and culture while enjoying a cool ale or tasty lunch. While in Nebo, don t miss the nearby spectacular murals at The Mac Village they stretch for over 260 metres depicting significant people and events in Australian history. Guided tours (optional) can be booked at The Mac Village tel 4950 5299 where meals and beverages can also be purchased at the Tavern. The Nebo Rodeo (May) and Campdraft (June/July) are world - class events. Call 4950 5733 for further information. CHILL OUT AT LAKE ELPHINSTONE HAY POINT EXPORTING TO THE WORLD Lake Elphinstone is a natural freshwater lake (8km by 6km) adjacent to the road between Nebo (60km) and Glenden (30km). The lake is renowned for water sports such as water skiing, and has a significant bird population. Relatively shallow in parts, and with a small catchment area, it has been known to dry out in drought periods. Camping in the recreation reserve is free of charge; toilets and showers are available, however there is only limited drinking water and no electricity. Nearby Glenden offers accommodation and meals, and the road provides excellent views of the Connors Range diamond cliffs, the Bluff and the three Marlin Spikes. MOUNT BRITTON, HOMEVALE AND MACKAY HIGHLANDS GREAT WALK Mount Britton is a long abandoned former gold mining town from the 1800s that is also famous for rare geological formations (fossils). Rustic shelters and old mining equipment are on display with quality interpretive material. You can camp overnight, take wilderness hikes and try fossicking. Nearby Moonlight Dam is the southern end of the Mackay Highlands Great Walk (three to five days) stretching through picturesque escarpment landscapes to Eungella at the head of the Pioneer Valley. Call Parks and Wildlife for further information tel 4958 4753. Hay Point is a fascinating place seen by few Australians, yet one of the most important export locations in our whole country. Drive up to the hilltop lookout and you ll see the world s largest coal port in action, capable of exporting well over 100 million tonnes of thermal and metallurgical coal per annum. Coal is supplied to the two terminals by trains carrying up to 10,000 tones of coal per load, from a rail network that is capable of delivering more than 30 trains in a 24 hour period. Coal is stacked and reclaimed by monster machines known as stackers and reclaimers that work at rates of up to 7,500 tonnes per hour that convey the coal across more than 50kms of conveyor belt. Once the cargo has been assembled and is ready to be sent to the wharf, ships are berthed under the supervision of experienced marine pilots that are transferred by helicopter to the ships 24 hours a day. Many of the ships can carry over 200,000 tonnes, and transport the coal to buyers throughout the world. DISCOVER SARINA AND THE SERENITY COAST Friendly Sarina and its pretty coastline offer travellers a wealth of places and activities to enjoy. At the central Field of Dreams you ll find the Sarina Sugar Shed Australia s only working miniature sugar mill and distillery, the impressive Sarina Tourist Art and Craft Centre, the Art Gallery and Historic Centre. Within minutes drive, are superb beaches, picnic spots, accommodation and caravan park options, along with boat ramps, fishing and crabbing, and the nearby Cape Palmerston National Park. Call 4956 2251 for further information.
