Why are we going to Iceland? Strong links with the NEW A-level curriculum (AQA). 1. Plate Tectonics: Mid-Atlantic Ridge & Volcanic Activity 2. Managing Natural Hazards & The Eyjafjallajokull Case Study 3. River Environments & Waterfalls 4. Coastal Environments 5. Glaciers and Cold Environments 6. The Energy Issue 7. The Growth of Tourism 8. Synoptic Studies to help with synoptic thinking (Thinking like a Geographer) My vision is to offer trips for every year of study that a student studies Geography at Edgbarrow. This will help enhance the curriculum, show the importance of Geography to your son or daughter s in the real world and ultimately help inspire them in the exam room and in their coursework. The trips will give the students case studies in a new learning environment, in ways which are fun and exciting, and which give the opportunity for team building and personal development. Not to mention the fact that they will have the time of their lives.
Students will study volcanic hazards, including ash flow, lava flow and gaseous emissions study plate tectonics, geology and continental drift study geothermal activity, energy and tourism study local tourism and sustainability issues undertake a case study: Why do people live near volcanoes? Students will have had an opportunity to: Swim in the famous Blue Lagoon hot springs Walk on a Glacier. Visit to the Ljosafoss Hydro electric Power station Have a chance to see the Northern Lights See the famous Geysir which will erupt boiling water up to 70 metres in to the air. Cook an egg in a hot spring!
What will we see?

Don t forget your selfie stick!

Food Whilst in Iceland it is full board. Breakfast lunch (Packed lunch) and dinner are provided. We leave at 9.30am on the Friday so students should bring a packed lunch or money to buy food at the airport as they might not get the chance again until we arrive at the hotel (depending on the flight). Students might also want to bring some extra cash to buy some presents/extra food and drinks!!
Insurance Bracknell Forest have a trip policy that covers all students and staff on the trip so you wont need to get your own.
Costs Number dependent The quote we have been given by Discover the World is for the trip to be approximately 900. This is likely to change and at this time I can t say if this will go up or down but should be very close to this.
Teachers to student ratio Except for me I have not confirmed which teacher are to go. However I will want to go with a minimum of 1 teacher to every 10 students. Likely to be better than this.
Documentation needed by you! ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE THEIR OWN PASSPORT AND MEDICAL EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). If you do not have an EHIC, they can be obtained free from the following website: www.ehic.org.uk After Christmas I will ask for these to be handed in and they will be kept safe in school and by staff on the trip.
You should also know. Before you make your final decision on this trip you should also be aware that we also have a trip planned for March 2017 for the year 12 Geography Students to Nettlecombe Court in Somerset. This trip is VERY important for the students exams both at AS and A level. This trip will cost around 350 per student (we are waiting for final quotes). A deposit of 50 would also be required by the end of October.
