JEFF KOONS NEWEST CREATIONS: ANTIQUITY SERIES Koons reaches back into art history with his new series Antiquity, exploring the goddess of love in huge glossy metallic sculptures. Balloon Venus (Magenta) was unveiled in summer of 2012 in Frankfurt at the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung, as part of a 44-piece sculpture retrospective. Despite its resemblance to his «Celebration» series (Tulips, Hanging Heart, etc), it is the first work in the artist's new Antiquity series. Inspired by the Venus of Willendorf, a tiny figurine discovered in Austria and dating from around 23,000BC, Koons's sculpture proposes a new kind of idol a high-tech grande dame whose untouchable polished surfaces reflect the viewer. Metallic Venus, the turquoise sculpture, is a reference to the ancient Roman marble statue Callipygian Venus. Inspiration: Venus of Willendorf Inspiration: Venus Callipyge ANTIQUITY SERIES
JEFF KOONS BALLOON VENUS The story of Eros in his original Greek significance provides the leitmotif that links famous Jeff Koons works with masterpieces of antiquity. The affinity will perhaps be most evident in the two spectacular sculptures Balloon Venus and Metallic Venus. These creations make direct reference to grandiose sculptures of Greek antiquity conjuring up the world of Dionysus and the goddess of love. At the same time, they illustrate the degree to which Koons translates antique traditions into modern forms and proposes a modern approach to grasping their meaning in the process.
