Introduction INTRODUCTION The visual brand identity of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University provides a strong, consistent look that supports our mission to excel as a leading high quality research university engaged in education, discovery and innovation with social, intellectual and economic impact in the New York region, the nation and the world. The official name of the institution is Polytechnic Institute of New York University. The shortened version of the name of both New York University and the Polytechnic Institute of New York University is used in the logo (NYU-Poly), however, it should always appear in conjuction with the full official name. Campus community members are required to use the visual identity for their publications, advertising, all communication materials, websites and business materials. Additional items such as business cards, stationery and envelopes bearing the new identity will be available through the Purchasing Department. 3

Brand Colors PRIMARY BRAND COLORS PMS 2597 and PMS 368 are the official colors used on our logo. It is important to maintain a consistent use of both colors to support the creation of a strong, recognizable identity. They can be produced using either spot colors or four color process. RGB values should only be used for electronic media, such as the web, PowerPoint presentations, and other applications that are viewed on a computer monitor. Pantone Coated Pantone 2597 C C M Y K 85 100 0 0 R G B 82 46 145 Pantone Coated Pantone 368 C C M Y K 57 0 100 0 R G B 123 193 67 COLOR CONVERSION Different programs (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXPress, etc.) create different values when converting color from one form to another (spot to CMYK, CMYK to RGB, etc.). For this reason, if colors are converted, the values must always be checked against those listed on this page. 4

Brand Colors SECONDARY BRAND COLORS The following supplemental colors may be used in conjunction with the primary brand colors in general communications materials. Pantone Coated Pantone Process Black C C M Y K 0 0 0 100 R G B 35 31 32 Pantone Metallic Coated Pantone 877 C C M Y K 0 0 0 40 R G B 167 169 172 ADDITIONAL COLORS Additional colors may be used in general communications materials beyond the primary and secondary brand colors. Extra colors, however, should complement and not compete with, or overpower the primary brand colors. For questions or requests for exceptions to this rule, please contact the Marketing Department. 5

NYU-Poly Trademark NYU-POLY TRADEMARK To establish the full identity of our institution, the NYU-Poly logotype should be used in its complete, official form. The NYU-Poly letters are combined in a customized unified logo design with the descriptor Polytechnic Institute of New York University, underneath. + Because letterforms in the identity and signature have been modified, they should never be typeset. + Digital files exist for all elements of the identity. The appropriate file should be used for reproduction to ensure proper relationships among elements. + Never combine files containing individual elements or alter files (stretch, change colors, enlarge causing pixelation, etc.). + If a need arises for which an appropriate file does not exist, please contact the Marketing Department in order to review and secure approvals. 6

NYU-Poly Trademark AREA OF ISOLATION The width of the NYU-Poly logo visually equals the width of the descriptor Polytechnic Institute of New York University. To be most effective, our logo should always be surrounded by at least a minimum prescribed amount of blank space. This area of isolation will set off the identity from accompanying text and graphic elements. The area of isolation is a minimum area. Whenever possible, more space should be allotted. MINIMUM SIZE The minimum width of the NYU-Poly trademark is 1.25 inches. 7

NYU-Poly Circle NYU-POLY CIRCLE The NYU-Poly circle is a key graphic element for the NYU-Poly brand. In any one of its expressions, the NYU-Poly circle conveys both a sense of progressive movement and connectivity. The NYU-Poly circle can be reinterpreted in a variety of ways so long as the original shape and brand positioning is intact. Its contents may be reimagined to hold colors, images, type and graphics. Examples of potential meanings that it can convey include: + The unification of NYU and NYU-Poly s rich traditions + NYU-Poly s past and presents + NYU-Poly s teaching of theory and practice 11

PolyThinking ABOUT POLYTHINKING The tagline Discover the Power of PolyThinking has been replaced with Leading invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship to reflect our new institutional vision and academic philosophy. The phrase PolyThinking, which refers to the agile and creative intellectual activity that goes on at the Institute, has, however, become part of the Polytechnic vernacular. As such, its usage is still permitted in body copy and other text. Derivatives such as PolyThinkers and the Power of PolyThinking are also permitted in body copy. 15

Departments DEPARTMENTS All departments must adhere to the following visual identity, and individual department logos should be eliminated. EXAMPLES 17

Stationery Ensemble STATIONERY ENSEMBLE Stationery is an extremely important link between the school and its various audiences. It creates a visual image that supports the use of the logo and other graphic elements. It is an important visual expression of our image. By using one design format, we project a unified and consistent look. Our standard stationery should be used for all correspondence. The position of the logo and address must appear in the locations shown in the following pages. No other graphic elements should be added to the stationery. Typography guidelines are included. As part of the stationery, it is important that business cards coordinate with letterhead and envelopes. As they create an often lasting tangible reminder of the organization, their consistency with the system is vital to our image. Polly Smith Instructor T: 718.260.3500 F: 718.260.3755 psmith@poly.edu John Doe City Hall New York, NY 10007 Dear John, I know this is an exciting time of the year for you, as your child prepares to graduate from high school and selects which college to attend in the Fall. Today, I am writing to share with you some valuable information about topics that as a parent you may want to have answered. Let me first start by saying that my staff and I are here for you. The Admissions Office is open extended hours, campus tours are given throughout the week, and counselors are available in-person, via email and by telephone. Please contact Admissions at 1-800-POLYTECH or 718-637-5955. Financial Aid and Scholarships: NYU-Poly s Office of Financial Aid has worked incredibly hard on packaging each and every one of our admitted students. The Director of Financial Aid has checked and double-checked our aid packages to ensure our affordability. Listed below are some common issues that I would like to help you solve immediately. The Institute does offer monthly payment plans to help you budget any out-of-pocket costs for tuition and fees. Please contact the Office of Student Accounts, 718-260-3700, for more information. Careers: NYU-Poly s Office of Career Management is dedicated to preparing your child for that all-important first job when they graduate, and through company visits, career fairs, and internships, they make meaningful connections between top corporations and NYU-Poly students. Google, Microsoft, IBM, NASA, Yahoo!, and hundreds of other companies actively recruit our students. Finally, payscale.com ranked NYU-Poly #7 in Northeast for salary potential among its graduates with NYU-Poly alumni averaging mid-career pay of $114,000. Academic Support: Free tutoring services are available through the Office of Special Services. Our experience shows that students can encounter academic difficulties in a class or two during their first year. The Office of Special Services provides different levels of tutoring from Drop-in Tutoring prior to exams, to on-going tutoring throughout the semester. Congratulations on reaching this important step in the enrollment process. If you would like to contact a member of our admissions staff, please feel free to call us at 718-637-5955 or email psmith@poly.edu. I hope to hear from you during the next week and I look forward to personally welcoming you and your child to the NYU-Poly community.
