Graphic Standards Manual
1 About This Manual This graphic standards manual was developed to provide general guidelines regarding Golden West College s visual identity. It introduces a new college logo, and a new college seal. It provides a guide toward an understanding of the usage of GWC s name and logo, school colors, and typography in order to assure consistency across all aspects of use. The guidelines in this manual are not, however, intended to limit graphic creativity on campus, but to ensure that our various audiences quickly and accurately identify Golden West College in our communications with them. Use of distinct graphic elements sends a message of a unified institution, thereby building upon the college s reputation and visibility. If you have any questions that have not been answered in this manual, please contact the College Promotions Office: promotions@gwc.cccd.edu Debbie Bales dbales@gwc.cccd.edu ext David Dluzak ddluzak@gwc.cccd.edu ext Sean Glumace sglumace@gwc.cccd.edu ext Vendors Please Note: Any visual communications printed or otherwise produced by vendors on behalf of any Golden West College department or division are required to comply with the graphic standards policies outlined in this manual regarding the use of the college logo and seal. Golden West College reserves the right to withhold vendor payment for any materials that fail to adhere to these policies. 3 2 GWC Graphic Standards To succeed in today s increasingly competitive world, institutions of higher education are reaching out and communicating as never before to build support from a broad array of constituencies such as current and prospective students, their parents, alumni, donors, internal constituencies such as faculty and staff, and external audiences. By consistently incorporating Golden West College brand messages in our communications through print and online marketing materials, our actions, and our outreach we continue to improve the status and reputation of the College, showing the public that we do, in fact, deliver what we promise. That they can trust us. That we have integrity. Each time constituents come in contact with a GWC brochure, event, Web page, or even a faculty or staff member, they naturally form and reshape their opinions of Golden West College. When they encounter consistent approaches and delivery of services, stakeholders feel a sense of familiarity and confidence. The end result: increased credibility and College standing. All employees shape the GWC brand through their actions, comments, and messages to the public.
3 Colors OFFICIAL SCHOOL COLORS There are two college colors which should be reproduced as accurately as possible in whichever medium they are used. 6 5 Golden West College Logo The GWC logo was adopted September 21, The design was based on Golden West College s niche its location in Huntington Beach, California (Surf City, USA TM ). The goal achieved by the surfboard shape visually identifies GWC as the College in Surf City.
6 GWC Logo Variations The GWC logo refers to the joining of two primary elements in the graphic identity system the surfboard logo and the logotype. The logotype consists of the word identifiers, HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA set in the official Optima typeface and style. HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA must always be a smaller font size by at least 2 pts. The GWC Logo is unique and is one of the most important visual elements of the identity. In order for the logo to be used effectively in a considerable variety of applications, the system provides 5 different logos for Golden West College as well as variety of alternate logos exampled on the following pages. Header HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA Stacked 3-line Do not try to alter any aspect of the logo and do not try to recreate it. Use only the logos which have been supplied and approved. Horizontal Stacked 2-line Round
7 REVERSE REPRODUCTION All logo variations are available in reversed color to be used on dark backgrounds. The background needs to provide adequate contrast for sufficient clarity and legibility. A value of 60% or darker is preferred.
8 Backgrounds Use the black logos when printing on colored paper, reproducing materials on copy machines, or sending faxes. Color logos will not reproduce well in these instances. Always choose the appropriate logo to provide adequate contrast with the background. Use the positive logo when the background value is 40% or less. The reverse logo should be used when the background value is 60% or more. 10% 30% Any of the logos may be printed on a solid color, screen of color, textured, or photographic background that provides sufficient contrast for clarity and legibility. 70% 90% Do not use backgrounds with distracting patterns or colors with poor contrast. Although a logo can be printed on a variety of backgrounds, no words or images should overlap or merge with it. It should never be integrated into an illustration or other symbol or logo. Please note that although only one logo is used for demonstration purposes, all of the logos are subject to these parameters.
9 Staging and Sizes Clearspace An exclusion zone (clearspace) has been developed to make sure that the logo is sufficiently prominent. Do not allow type, rules or any other graphic device into this area. Minimum Size For clarity and reproduction quality, do not use any logotype smaller than the ones shown. Use the correct version of the logotype depending on the size requirement and reproduction quality. Minimum sizes are based on a size of 6 pts. for HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA. When reproduced very small, us the logo without the text. Maintain spacing equal to 1/2 the height of the logo as illustrated. The same principle applies to all versions of the logotype. GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA 3-line stacked version logotype = 1.65 x 1 Total area with clearspace = 2 x.1.45 Clearspace equals 1/2 the height of the logo. Round version logotype = 1.25 x 1 Total area with clearspace = 1.4 x 1.15 Horizontal version logotype = 1.4 x.5 Total area with clearspace = 1.75 x.8 The same principle applies to all logotype variations. HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA 2-line stacked version logotype = 1.25 x.5 Total area with clearspace = 1.5 x.75
10 SUPPLEMENTAL LOGOS BOOKSTORE The identity system provides a method for individual departments or organizations within the college to create a customized logo by utilizing one or more of the logo variations with the addition of a specific name. HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA will be replaced with the name of the department or organization. The customized name must be at least 2 pts. smaller than, and the typeface OPTIMA must be used. For assistance in creating the customized logo, contact College Promotions. ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE HEALTH CENTER FOUNDATION OFFICE 40th Anniversary Logo ARTS AND LETTERS
11 Stationery System The Golden West College official correspondence is highly visible and it is important that every member of staff follows and applies the guidelines. Stationery templates have been created and are available to campus personnel on the Q drive: Q:\AdmSvcs\CSS\GraphicsRequestForms Do not try to alter any aspect of the stationery set and do not try to recreate it. Use only the templates which have been supplied and approved. Paper stock should be of good quality and envelope stock and other materials should be chosen to match paper stock. Printed letterhead is available in the GWC Bookstore. Business cards are ordered in the Fiscal Services Office Golden West Street P.O. Box 2748 Huntington Beach, CA Debbie Bales Graphic Designer Public Relations (714) ext (714) fax dbales@gwc.cccd.edu Letterhead Templates are available for color and black & white letterhead. Margins are set to.5 on top, bottom and both sides Golden West Street P.O. Box 2748 Huntington Beach, CA The letterhead must include the District Board of Trustees with current members updated. Color letterhead can be printed on white or ivory paper. No other colored paper is allowed for official letterhead Goldenwest Street P.O. Box 2748 Huntington Beach CA (714) Kenneth D. 13 12 Golden West College Seal The Golden West College seal was designed and approved in November, The Seal is used when a formal look is desired, such as certificates, diplomas, resolutions, and invitations. The design comprises the same typeface as the logo, a laurel leaf symbolizing achievement, the year GWC was founded 1966, and GWC s first slogan Let Change be the Tradition. Its round shape symbolizes perfection.

15 Typeface Consistent use of typography will unify the appearance of all application types. The typefaces listed below are compatible with our signature. Type families from both sans serif and serif contrast with each other and create visual distinction. The Golden West College typefaces for body copy are: Myriad Pro (Sans Serif) Minion Pro (Serif ) Myriad Pro and Minion Pro are OpenType fonts which are cross-platform (Mac & PC) and provide multiple typefaces within a family which allows flexibility within the corporate identity program. You can use any weight within these families. The one you use will depend on the needs and emphasis of your particular communication materials. Size 8 point minimum. This is not suggested as a standard point size but rather as a minimum below which point size should not be reduced for legibility. For ADA compliance, 12 point type is the recommended standard for certain audiences. Legibility and design considerations should be the determining factor in the use of white space. About OpenType Fonts OpenType is a new cross-platform font file format developed jointly by Adobe and Microsoft. Adobe has converted the entire Adobe Type Library into this format and now offers thousands of OpenType fonts. The two main benefits of the OpenType format are its cross-platform compatibility (the same font file works on Macintosh and Windows computers), and its ability to support widely expanded character sets and layout features, which provide richer linguistic support and advanced typographic control. The OpenType format is an extension of the TrueType SFNT format that also can support Adobe PostScript font data and new typographic features. OpenType fonts containing PostScript data, such as those in the Adobe Type Library, have an.otf suffix in the font file name, while TrueType-based OpenType fonts have a.ttf file name suffix. OpenType fonts can include an expanded character set and layout features, providing broader linguistic support and more precise typographic control. Feature-rich Adobe OpenType fonts can be distinguished by the word Pro, which is part of the font name and appears in application font menus. OpenType fonts can be installed and used alongside PostScript Type 1 and TrueType fonts.
16 MYRIAD PRO Typeface Family Myriad Pro typeface family An Adobe Originals design first released in 1992, Myriad has become popular for both text and display composition. The full Myriad Pro family includes condensed, normal, and extended widths in a full range of weights. Myriad has a warmth and readability that result from the humanistic treatment of letter proportions and design detail. Myriad Pro s clean open shapes, precise letter fit, and extensive kerning pairs make this unified family of roman and italic an excellent choice for text typography that is comfortable to read, while the wide variety of weights and widths in the family provide a generous creative palette for even the most demanding display typography. Minion Pro combines the aesthetic and functional qualities that make text type highly readable with the versatility of OpenType digital technology, yielding unprecedented flexibility and typographic control, whether for lengthy text or display settings. The full Minion Pro family contains three weights and two widths, each with optical size variants, and each supporting a full range of Western languages, including Greek and Cyrillic. With its many ligatures, small caps, oldstyle figures, swashes, and other added glyphs, Minion Pro is ideal for uses ranging from limited-edition books to newsletters to packaging.
