South Moravia Region Basic information The South Moravia region is situated in the southeast part of Moravia. It shares borders with Austria and Slovakia. The region s largest cities are Brno, Blansko, Vyškov, Znojmo and Hodonín. The South Moravia region is a traditionally important and diversified industrial production area. The major industrial branch is engineering. An increase has been recorded in recent years in electrical engineering, IT industries, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical technology. The city of Brno is an important centre of university education. It is home to Masaryk University, the Technical University, Mendel College of Agriculture and Forestry, the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University, the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts and the Military Academy.

Transportation The South Moravia region has the second largest highway and first-class road network in the country. The east-west D1 highway (Prague Vyškov) bisects the region and links up with the R46 dualcarriage way to Olomouc. The southbound D2 highway extends from Brno to Bratislava. Both the 1st and 2nd international rail corridors (Berlin Prague Brno Budapest and Vienna Ostrava Warsaw) pass through the South Moravia region, intersecting in Břeclav. Nowadays company Zetor, a.s. plans to concentrate production to northeast edge of the whole industrial zone and propose vacated western part to city of Brno for future optimal use (Science and Technology Park).
