1 European College of Veterinary Public Health Annual Meeting and Conference Hotel Continental, Brno, Czech Republic 5 th 7 th October 2011 On behalf of ECVPH organizing committee, we are pleased to invite you to the Annual Meeting and Conference in Brno, Czech Republic. The conference will take place on 5 th -7 th October, 2011 and will again focus on VPH on the move at the interface between human and animal health. Brno, the second largest city the Czech Republic, has a population of nearly 400,000 people. It lies in the central part of Europe and within its two hundred-kilometers radius there are important European capitals: Prague, Vienna and Bratislava. Brno is situated in a picturesque countryside, surrounded on three sides by wooded hills and opening to the Southern Moravian lowlands to the south of the city. In the north, the city is guarded by the foothills of the Drahany and Bohemian-Moravian ranges. Thanks to its location Brno enjoys a very pleasant, moderate climate, ideal for recreation and everyday living. Brno is the metropolis of Moravia and an important tourist center for all who want to explore the natural and cultural beauties of the South-Moravian region. To the north of Brno there is a protected area of the Moravian Karst (Moravský kras) and to the south stretch the Moravian vineyards with their typical wine cellars. Brno prides itself many notable historic sites that show evidence of its rich cultural history. Once established as a settlement of merchants on the junctions of the rivers Svratka and Svitava, eight centuries ago, it withstood the pressure of both the Hussite and Swedish besiegement, witnessed Napoleon s military expedition to Austerlitz, bore the cruel consequences of the Austrian defeat at the Battle of the Three Emperors, became an industrial center of the Habsburg monarchy called "the Austrian Manchester" and, in the twentieth century, gained a character of a modern city thanks to the construction of new buildings in the functionalist style. The most important example of modern architecture in Brno is The Tugendhat Villa - a historic site inscribed on the UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List. The Brno Exhibition Centre with its eighty-year tradition is a venue of many international trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses, and plays a significant role in the social and economic life of the whole city. The City of Brno regularly holds various cultural events, festivals, as well as some notable sporting events. Brno is also a city of modern shopping and entertainment centers. Thanks to its very good meteorological conditions, the airport acts as a main reserve airport for Prague. There is only limited number of flights but the international airports in Prague and Vienna, which are served by most airlines, can be reached by car/bus in approximately two hours. TRAVEL by CAR/ROAD TRANSPORT Brno is situated at the crossroads of the D1 (Prague - Brno) and D2 (Brno - Bratislava) motorways. Both these motorways form part of the trans-european East-West highways (France - Ukraine: E50) and North-South (Scandinavia - Balkans: E55, E65). RAIL TRANSPORT Brno is one of the most important Central-European rail junctions, as it is situated on the international Balkan - Budapest - Prague - Berlin - Scandinavia rail route.the Main Railway Station lies near the city center. An automatic connection search according to your requests is carried out by the IDOS electronic timetable that enables to combine train-bus-boat-plane-mass urban transport connections. Several ways are available, in which you can find a connection as follows: BUS TRANSPORT The central bus station in Brno is called Zvonarka. It lies near the city center and the Main Railway Station. An Old bus terminal is in the city-center close to the Main Railway Station opposite the hotel Grand at Benesova street. Many buses start or end there. All standard rooms, superior rooms and business rooms are wellequipped with a shower / WC, hair-dryer, telephone with direct dialing, satellite TV and a minibar. In addition to that, superior rooms and business rooms are equipped with a safety deposit box, radio with alarm clock and a trouser press. How to get to Hotel Continental From the Airport Brno-Turany - the distance is about 9 km (approx. 20 min. by TAXI). Taxi stands near the terminal. You can also use the city bus No. 76 and go about 20 minutes to its final stop - Main Railway Station and take tram No.1. 3

4 From the Bus Terminal Zvonarka the distance is about 1.8 km. Taxi stands in the area of Bus Terminal. You can also use the tram No. 9 or 12, go to the Main Railway Station and there change the tram from No. 9, 12 to No. 1. From Brno Main Railway Station or Old Bus Terminal Grand and the city center - the distance is about 1.2 km. Taxi stands in front of Hotel Grand. From the Main Railway Station ("Hlavni nadrazi") you will get to the Hotel Continental by tram No. 1 in the direction Reckovice - you get off at Moravske namesti (Moravske Square), cross the lines and the little park, and you find the hotel on the right side, behind a big glass parking building (the way takes about 10 minutes). The traveller must purchase a ticket which has to be marked in the bus or tram before each journey by the city transport. The validity of a ticket is time and zone limited. For most journeys around Brno, a two-zone ticket for 60 minutes (22 CZK - 0,8 EURO) will be sufficient. For a longer stay, one-day or three-day tickets for zones are offered for an attractive price. UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES BRNO TOUR There will be organized tours around the campus of the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno. This will be held on Wednesday 5/10/2011 at 16:00 and on Friday 7/10/2011 at 13:30 (please send us an on: ecvph2011@ .cz untill 3/10/2011, if you are interested in and which term did you choose).
