2 Match Learner Learning by Playing Match is a quality game for all children age 2 years and up. The games can be used separately or in combination, resulting in a very high number of game types. This makes it easy to adapt the game to the children s age and skill levels. The high number of game-varieties makes Match a motivational, social and challenging game. Match is available in 9 types: Shapes and Colors Numbers and Quantities Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division Fractions Percentages Decimals

6 Ideas for playing: Match Learner Shapes and Colors, Numbers and Quantities A good tip for getting the tiles into the tube: Stack all the tiles up, and slip the tube on from the top! 1. Match tiles in groups of two, three or four: The tiles should be matched according to their shapes, colors, numbers or quantities. For example: Can you find two heart-shaped figures? Can you find three pentagons or pentagon-shaped figures? Can you find four tiles that equal the number five? 2. Mini Match: Select only a few Matches from the box and play with these. This way you will get an easier game, which might be a good idea when you first introduce the game to your child. You can also select only a few tiles with all of the following game variations. 3. Play with shapes: Can you find one square, one triangle and one circle? Can you pick out two stars? 4. Play with colors: How many tiles with something yellow on them can you find? All the boats have got different colors on their sails; can you name some of the colors? 5. Play with numbers: Arrange the numbers. Say the name of each number out loud: "One, two, three...". Can you find the number 4? Number 2 is orange; can you find number 2?

7 6. Play with quantities: Can you find a tile with five things on it? How many carrots has the bunny got? Can you find two tiles that add up to nine (for example 6 and 3)? 7. Play with sizes: Can you arrange the squares from smallest to largest? Which circle is the smallest one? Which of the triangles is the biggest one? Which star is not the biggest and not the smallest, but in between? 8. Talk about the pictures: Pick out some of the picture tiles and talk about what you see. What shape is the ball? Who do you think might be playing with the ball? Where do you go to play with a ball? 9. Sing a song: Use the tiles as singing cards, for example: Twinkle twinkle little star Itsy bitsy spider 1, 2, Buckle My Shoe 10. Make a story: Pick out some of the picture tiles and make your own story. If there are several kids, each child can get one tile, and then they can all make up a story together: "Once upon a time there was a big brown bear who had been sleeping all Winter...". 11. Count the sides of the shapes: How many sides are there in a triangle? Can you count the sides of the squares?

8 12. Play memory: Pick out some of the tiles. Mix and turn them upside down. Find two and two matches. 13. Work with concepts and opposites: The bear is asleep, what is the opposite of being asleep? Do you think that it is cold or warm outside the bear's lair? What about inside? 14. Work with prepositions: Which cakes are on the top shelf? Which ones are on the bottom shelf? Is the baker in front of the cakes or behind the cakes? 15. Find your friends: In a group with several children, you can hand out one tile to each child. They should then walk around and try to find their partners; the other children with the matching tiles to theirs.

14 Ideas for playing: Match Learner Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division A good tip for getting the tiles into the tube: Stack all the tiles up, and slip the tube on from the top! 1. Standard Match: Build memory span and develop mathematical skills! Play with the tiles either face-up or facedown on the table; vary the number of tiles used according to level of difficulty. When you find a Match (two matching tiles), say both the calculations and the answers out loud. One of the players might function as a controller who checks each of the other players' Matches. He or she might also use a calculator if necessary. This is a great way to include weaker students and to give them an important role in their group. Matches that are wrong should be put back out on the table. 2. Mini Match: Select only some Matches from the box and play the standard way. This way you will get a much quicker game, which might be a good idea when you first introduce the game. You can also select only a few tiles with all of the following game variations. 3. First past the post: Tiles are placed face-up on the table. One player selects a tile, holds it up and says the answer out loud. All the other players must now compete to find one or more matching tiles. The players receive one point for each matching tile, and the next in line holds up a new tile. The winner is the player with most points at game end. 4. Pick & Pick: The tiles are placed facedown on the table. All the players pick a tile and say the answers out loud, taking turns. The player with the highest numbered answer keeps his or her tile. The rest of the tiles are returned to the table and the game continues until all tiles are picked. The player with the most tiles at the end is the winner of the game. 5. QuickBrain: One of the players is chosen as reader. The reader selects a tile at random and reads out the calculation. The first player to say the answer out loud wins the card. The player with most cards at game end is crowned the winner and QuickBrain. 6. First to 100: The same rules as standard Match apply, but the answers give points. For example Match 2+2 and Match 1+3 give 4 points. New Matches won are added to the score and the first player to reach one hundred points is the winner. This game can also be played as "First to 0": The rules are the same as over, but every player starts with 100 points. The answers from the Matches are subtracted from each player's points. The first player to reach zero or who is closest to zero at game end wins the game. 7. Match on time: Play as usual. The winner of the game is the person with most Matches after a given time, for instance 10 minutes. Write down your individual statistic. Are you getting more Matches each time?

15 8. Match with calculator: Play as usual, but you are allowed to use your calculator. 9. Find the Match: Place all the tiles face-up on the table. Try to find Matches (two matching tiles) as fast as you can. Then sort the Matches from lowest to highest number according to the answers. 10. Match as calculations: Pick one tile and make a calculation. Write it down or say the answer out loud. Repeat until all the selected tiles are calculated. 11. Combo-Match: Select two or more boxes of Match, for example Match Learner Addition and Match Learner Subtraction. Mix them up and place the tiles face-up or facedown. Play as usual and keep your cool! You now have twice as many possible Matches. For instance 2+2 and 8-4 can make a new Match. 12. Team-Match: Each team receives a Match-box and plays as usual, with or without a time limit. When all the Matches are taken, or the time is up, each team count their Matches. If a team finish the game before the time is up, they might start over. Which team has the most Matches? How many Matches did the class pick all together? Will your team pick more Matches the next time you play? Make a team statistic and maybe also a class statistic. 13. Fake or Fact Match: Two or more teams stand ready in the middle of the classroom. Two chairs are placed at the end of the room, with notes saying "RIGHT" and "WRONG" placed on them. A reader gives out a fact, for instance "7 times 7 is 48". One person from each of the teams runs towards the chair he or she thinks is the right one. This is a fun game variation with lots of movement and laughs. 14. Line of numbers Match: This is an activity for the entire class. You draw a line of numbers for instance at the blackboard. Each student is given or picks a tile. One by one the students now place their tile where it belongs in the line of numbers.

Place all the tiles on the table. Now sort the tiles in ascending order. Be aware of what strategies you use as you go along. This is a great way to understand the connection between fractions, percentages and decimals! 5. Find 100%: The goal is to find two or more tiles which will give a total of 100% / one whole. For instance, 50% and the tile with a half circle will be a 100%-Match. The fractions 3/4 and 1/4 and the decimals 0,75 and 0,250 are also 100%-Matches. With this game, you can also mix two or three boxes.

21 6. Match on time: Play as usual. The winner of the game is the person with most Matches after a given time, for instance 10 minutes. Write down your individual statistic. Are you getting more Matches each time? 7. Match with calculator: Play as usual, but you are allowed to use your calculator. 8.
