To my wife Beverly for her love and support

Preface It has been said many times over that practice is the best way to prepare for any event that one wants to complete successfully. Whether it is a football game, a chess match, or an examination, good preparation involves practice. Thorough preparation for any event increases confidence, reduces anxiety, and heightens one's ability to succeed. Because it is the MRI registry that we are preparing for, this book has been written in a practice format for technologists. The areas covered in this book are basic to MRI and fare non-manufacturer specific with the exception of some of the parameter terms. Throughout the book many of the different terms used to describe a single principle have been used with the hopes of preparing the technologist for any way a question may be worded. With the exception of the cross sectional anatomy section, the answers to each question have been included on the same page to increase learning efficiency but they are also easy to hide so that testing one's knowledge can also be achieved. The correct answer to each question is always within the selection. The books within the bibliography are all excellent for technologists and are highly recommended for increasing one's understanding of magnetic resonance imaging. I have worked diligently to assure that this book is thorough and I sincerely hope that it will be the tool that provides the highest level of preparation. GOOD LUCK! Kenneth S. Meacham vii

Acknowledgments When I began this project I never knew the amount of work that it would take to complete, and without the help of many great people this book would not exist. I would first like to thank Mike Perry for continually working to motivate me and for critically evaluating every step. I would also like to thank Fred Chitwood, Paul Woodard, Kristine Porter, Aileen Mains, and Dr. John Bisese for their help and inspiration. viii
