1 Bon Secours St. Mary s School of Medical Imaging Course Descriptions by Semester Class of 2009 First Year Fall REV.5/07 Credits CRS 101 Clinical Radiation Science 3 A clinical education course designed to develop and support material taught in PRO 101, PRO121, RAD 100, RAD 121, and RSC 101. This course contains a multiple day Clinical Orientation in which students are taught basic skills to allow entry into the clinical environment. This orientation includes, but is not limited to: Radiation Safety, Body Mechanics, Standard Precautions, Film Handling, History Taking, Legal and Ethical Issues. Students then progress on to actual clinical training in which they begin to develop technical skill, interpersonal skill, critical thinking skill and communication skills required to be an entry level technologist. Students participate in performing radiographic examinations 16 hours per week in a hospital/ Doctor s Office or Outpatient Imaging Center under the supervision of Registered Technologists and Clinical Instructors. Testing methods for this course include: verbal, practical and written testing. This course requires program admission as a prerequisite. PRO 101 Radiographic Procedures I 3 Students learn basic radiographic positioning of the chest, abdomen, and extremities in this course. Anatomy pertinent to each radiographic examination is also studied. Methods of radiography using standard radiographic rooms and portable machinery are covered. Radiation Safety practice is taught with each unit of study. Students also utilize critical thinking exercises to explore adaptive techniques for use on difficult or non-standard patients. This course requires Human Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology and program admission as prerequisites. PRO 121 Radiographic Procedures Lab I 1 Students participate in the coordinated lab component of PRO 101. During lab, students practice radiographic positions learned in PRO 101 and simulate performing radiographic procedures on fellow students. Students also utilize critical thinking exercises to explore adaptive techniques for use on difficult of non-standard patients. Testing methods for this course include: practical testing. This course requires program admission as prerequisite. RAD 100 Law, Ethics and Human Diversity 1 This course is designed to develop understanding of diverse populations and their healthcare needs, explore ethical issues relevant to today s healthcare professional, review the history of medical ethics and explore medico-legal issues and law terminology pertinent to our profession. Students will work in groups, utilize critical thinking skills, and participate in debate and group discussion during this course. It is important that the imaging professional have knowledge of medical law, ethics and an understanding of cultural differences so the patient may be treated with understanding, sensitivity and compassion. RAD 121 Patient Care 1.5
2 This 8 week course prepares students to provide basic patient care including: measuring vital signs, CPR, handling emergency situations, contrast injection, treatment of allergic reactions, body mechanics, and other related topics. Testing methods for this course include: verbal, practical and written testing. This course requires program admission as a prerequisite. RSC 101 Image Production and Exposure 3 This 16-week course introduces and explores principals behind production of the radiographic image. Topics covered include: Density, Contrast, Film Processing, equipment components and Radiographic Technique factors. Testing methods for this course include: verbal, practical and written testing. This course requires Math 120 or higher and program admission as requirements. First Year Spring RAD 122 Patient Care II 1.5 This 8 week course is a continuation of RAD 121. Students develop knowledge and skills to provide patient care in the clinical setting. Testing methods for this course include: verbal, practical and written testing. This course requires RAD 121 or equivalent as prerequisite. CRS 102 Clinical Radiation Science 3 course requires CRS 101 or comparable course as prerequisite. PRO 102 Radiographic Procedures II 3 Students learn advanced radiographic positioning including spine, thorax, contrast examinations and fluoroscopic examinations. Students continue to develop critical thinking skills and adaptive techniques for use on difficult or non-standard. Anatomy pertinent to each radiographic examination is also studied. Methods of radiography using standard radiographic rooms and portable machinery are covered. Radiation Safety practice is taught with each unit of study. This course requires PRO 101& PRO 121 or comparable course as prerequisites. PRO 122 Radiographic Procedures Lab II 1 Students participate in the coordinated lab component of PRO 102. During lab, students practice radiographic positions learned in PRO 102 and simulate performing radiographic procedures on fellow students. Students also utilize critical thinking exercises to explore adaptive techniques for use on difficult of non-standard patients. Testing methods for this course include: practical testing. This course requires PRO 101 and PRO 121. RSC 102 Image Production and Exposure 3
3 This 15 week course continues to explore principles behind production and analysis of the radiographic image. Topics covered include: CR/DR, Filtration, Contrast, Density, Automatic Exposure Controls and Exposure Charts. Testing methods for this course include: verbal, practical and written testing. This course requires RSC 101 or comparable course as a prerequisite. Summer I CRS 151 Clinical Radiation Science 3 course requires CRS 102 or comparable course as prerequisite. HSF 151 Cross-sectional Anatomy 2 A course that teaches basic Cross-sectional anatomy as visualized in MRI and CT. Testing methods for this course include: Written testing. This course requires a Human Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology and PRO 102 & PRO 122 as prerequisites. PRO 151 Radiographic Procedures III 3 Students learn basic information in headwork and specialty areas such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Tomography, Ultrasound, Radiation Therapy, Nuclear medicine, Angiography, Cardiac Catherization, Mammography and more. Students continue to develop critical thinking skills and adaptive techniques. Anatomy pertinent to each examination is also studied. Safety practice is taught with each unit of study. This course requires PRO 102 & PRO 122 or comparable course as prerequisite PRO 152 Radiographic Procedures III 1 Students participate in the coordinated lab component of PRO 151. During lab, students practice radiographic positions learned in PRO 151 and simulate performing radiographic procedures on fellow students. Students also utilize critical thinking exercises to explore adaptive techniques for use on difficult of non-standard patients. Testing methods for this course include: practical testing. This course requires PRO 101, PRO 121, and PRO 151. RAD 160 Pharmacology 2 A 16-week course designed to continue study of pharmaceutical agents introduced in RAD 121 Patient Care. Students will develop an in-depth knowledge of medications, contrast agents and drugs that affect patients. This course requires RAD 121 and RAD 122 or comparable course as prerequisite. Testing methods for this course include: written testing. RAD 221 Introduction to Computers 1
4 An 8-week course designed to present basic computer skills to assist the student in daily work, either in the clinical setting or in the education setting. Course is modified according to the needs/skill level of the individual student. Content includes, but is not limited to, word processing to include the use of disks and CDs; communication including the set up of an account; and Internet searches and use of specified websites. Testing methods for this course include: written testing and practical testing. Second Year Fall RAD 151 Disease Processes 2 A 16-week course centered on the exploration of human disease and the effects of treatment/ prevention. This course extends beyond diseases that are demonstrated radiographically, increasing overall awareness and understanding of the patient condition. Topics include: hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, bioterrorism, communicable disease, epidemiology, CDC and reporting systems and other related topics. This course requires a Human Anatomy Course as prerequisite. Testing methods for this course include: written testing CRS 201 Clinical Radiation Science 3 course requires CRS 151 or comparable course as prerequisite. RSC 201 Radiographic Physics 3 The beginning of this 16-week course will provide the student with a review of mathematical and radiation concepts that will be necessary to achieve success in physics. Basic physics related to electricity and magnetism will then allow progression to the physics involved in production of the x-ray beam. This course requires RSC 101, 102 or comparable courses as prerequisite. Testing methods for this course include written testing. RSC 221 Imaging Equipment 3 This 16-week course provides progression into more advanced imaging methods and modalities. Computer assistance in image acquisition and options for data storage are introduced. Some review of the first year topics will be provided. This course allows for individual interests in equipment in a teaching experience for the student as they present unit information to classmates. Field trips will give opportunity or awareness in modalities. This course requires RSC 101, 102 or comparable courses as prerequisite. Testing methods for this course include written testing. History of Western Civilization or Other Art or Humanity Course 3
5 Students are required to complete or transfer in 3 college credits in humanities. J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College course HST 102 meets the requirements for this course. Transfer will be evaluated on an individual student basis. This course is not offered within Bon Secours, but is a required course for certificate completion. Second Year Spring CRS 202 Clinical Radiation Science 3 course requires CRS 201 or comparable course as prerequisite. RAD 250 Registry Review 5 A 15 week comprehensive review course designed to strengthen and support knowledge attained in all previous curriculum course work. Review materials and activities encourage students to identify areas of weakness/concern prior to program completion. Students will take multiple mock registry examinations in preparation for the ARRT national certification examination. As a prerequisite for this course, all curriculum courses must have been successfully completed. RSC 231 Radiation Protection and Radiobiology 3 This 15 week course includes the following topics: X-ray Interaction with Matter; Biological Impacts of Radiation; Radiation Safety/Protection for both Technologist and patient and History of Radiation Protection. Students also learn about specific design requirements of equipment and x- ray rooms. This course requires RSC 101, 102 or comparable courses as prerequisites. Testing methods for this course include: written testing. Communications 3 Students are required to complete or transfer in 3 college credits in communications. J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College courses AST 205 and ENG 137 meet the requirements for this course. Transfer will be evaluated on an individual student basis. This course is not offered within Bon Secours, but is a required course for certificate completion. Summer II CRS 250 Clinical Radiation Science 3
6 course requires CRS 202 or comparable course as prerequisite. RAD 201 Current Issues in Healthcare 1 This course is designed to explore the dynamics of various issues in the field of health and healthcare. Topics include the changing demographics of the healthcare consumer, increasing demands of the aging population, healthcare workforce and new medical technology and research. Challenges that shape the field of imaging technology and current innovative strategies will also be examined. The challenges include communication and generation issues, the role of professionalism, reimbursement concerns and confidentiality issues. Students will work in groups, utilize critical thinking skills, and participate in debate and group discussion during this course. It is important that the imaging professional have knowledge of the current issues and trends affecting the healthcare environment to better prepare to effectively enter into the field of healthcare. RSC 231 Radiographic Pathology 3 This 12 week semester is designed to integrate disease process knowledge and recognizing the radiographic appearance of specific diseases. This course requires successful completion of all anatomy, medical terminology, disease and radiographic exposure courses as prerequisites. Study will be body system based and will include information specific to signs, symptoms, treatments and prognosis of disease processes. Specific pathologies will be correlated with imaging study options and imaging examples will be assessed. An opportunity will be provided for radiologist mentoring of the student during this course. Testing methods for this course include: written testing and pathology identification on images. Sociology 3 Students are required to complete or transfer in 3 college credits in communications. J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College course SOC 200 meets the requirements for this course. Transfer will be evaluated on an individual student basis.
