Hanzel, Principal Sacramento New Technology High School Key Understandings 2011-2012 As New Tech is a very different program parents and students must acknowledge they understand these vital components before gaining admission to the school. The intent of this form is to make sure all partners student, staff, and school personnel are in agreement as to what the program entails. Program Objectives: New Tech considers college admission the goal for all students. The following aspects of the program need to be considered before applying: Ø Coursework at New Tech is very challenging; students must complete 260 credits for graduation. Ø Students will complete university A-G requirements to graduate. This requirement exceeds SCUSD graduation requirements. Ø Students will complete a one semester internship as seniors. Ø Students will enroll in community college coursework as juniors/ seniors and must complete 12 credits prior to graduation. Ø Students below grade level will participate in appropriate interventions to assure success by graduation. This may include before and after school classes, Academic Saturday School, Intersession CAHSEE Academy. New Tech is a small, inclusive program which will offer many advantages. However, there are some constraints to a small program: Ø Electives will be limited the first two years. Ø There is no team based athletic program. Students are allowed to try out for athletics at their school of residence. New Tech will offer the most personalized program possible: Ø Students will be in advisories to help guide them through high school. Ø We will strive to have a teacher-student ratio of 25-30 in all classes. Ø Your student will have a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP). Ø PLPs and Digital Portfolios will be works in progress that involves the student, parent and staff. Project Based Learning is the soul of the New Tech program. Ø Students will be teamed to work on projects for almost all major assignments. Ø New Tech s program requires student flexibility and responsibility. Ø The discipline to stay on task and maintain focus on projects timelines is critical. Ø Project teams will offer unique solutions to interesting problems. Ø Project content and concepts will be based on the California Standards. Ø Students not participating with their group may be fired from that group.
