Matignon High School Guidance Department Senior Information Packet Class of 2016
PLEASE USE THIS SENIOR INFORMATION PACKET AS A GUIDE AND TIMELINE FOR PREPARING YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION AND FOR REQUESTING SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS THROUGH THE GUIDANCE OFFICE. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER Naviance and Common Application Registration: You can register on the Naviance website as soon as you receive your code # s from the Guidance Office (Spring 2015). Once you register on Naviance, you can go into the Naviance program and research colleges on your Family Connection. However, be aware that the Naviance Program and your Common Application must be linked together in order for your high school documents to be sent to your colleges. That means the Guidance Office can not send your high school transcripts to your colleges unless you have linked your Naviance account to your Common Application. So, how do you do this? The Common Application will be available at ( after August 1, So, once the 2015 common Application is available, you must first create a user name and ID for your Common Application. Secondly, you must answer a number of education questions and sign the FERPA waiver on the Common Application, and then after you do those things, the two programs will be linked, and you can then enter the names of the colleges to which you will be applying into Naviance. Senior Information Sheet: This form must be completed and returned to the Guidance Office by Friday, October 2, The original copy remains in the Guidance Office; please make additional copies for your teacher(s). (See form below.) You may access this form from the Matignon Guidance web page or type the document into a word document and print it out. PLEASE BE SURE TO TYPE YOUR ANSWERS. The Senior Information Sheets will be distributed to seniors during the first week of school. Recommendations: Most colleges will require one (sometimes, two) teacher recommendation(s) as well as a recommendation from your guidance counselor. When you ask a teacher for a recommendation, be sure to ask the teacher in person, first, before you request the teacher recommendation on the Naviance Program. Please give or a completed senior information sheet to your teacher(s) and leave the original in the Guidance Office. Also, let the teacher(s) know the deadline as to when you would like the teacher(s) to send your recommendation. At the very minimum, you should give your teacher(s) and counselor a two- week notice in which to write your recommendation. It is always important to thank anyone who writes a recommendation for you. NOTE: In the rare instance that a college does not use the Common Application but uses their own application instead, we can still send your transcripts, etc., through
Naviance if the college accepts school documents electronically. If they do not accept documents electronically, we will mail your school documents to those specific colleges. By the end of October, you should have (1) registered on both the Common Application and the Naviance website, having a username and ID for both programs. You should have (2) completed your senior information sheet, and (3) you should have asked your teacher(s) for a recommendation. Your counselor recommendation goes automatically with your transcript on Naviance, and in fact, your transcript can not be sent to your colleges unless your counselor recommendation is completed. NOVEMBER SAT I & SAT Subject Tests or ACT Tests - You should have already registered and/or taken the October or November SAT s. You can still register for the December SAT s. Some schools may still consider SAT s taken in January if the application deadline for the college has not passed. Each senior is responsible for requesting the College Board to send his/her SAT s (I and Subject Tests, ACT tests) directly to the colleges. COLLEGE APPLICATION - WHEN TO APPLY: It is the student s responsibility to know the APPLICATION DEADLINES of the colleges to which he/she is applying. If you are applying Regular Decision to a college, then you can send out your application and request for your transcript to be sent at that time also. Regular Decision deadlines vary from college-to-college, but your first quarter grades will be included with Regular Decision deadlines. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION DEADLINES AND SUBMITTING YOUR TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORM TO GUIDANCE AT A MINIMUM OF 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE COLLEGE DEADLINE. If you are applying Early Action, then again, you need to check on the Early Action deadline for the individual college. Early Action deadlines can be as early as November 1, November 15, December 1 or December 15. THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PACKAGE There are two parts to the complete college application package The College Application and The Transcript Package. The student is responsible for the complete College Application. Each senior must complete his/her college application and submit it to the college through the Common Application. Students are responsible for submitting the application, the application fee, essay (if required), and any other information such as a graded writing sample, art portfolio, etc. that a college may request. As we stated previously, students are responsible for knowing the college application deadlines. DON T TREAT DEADLILNES AS THE DATES YOU ARE TO DO SOMETHING. GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME TO INSURE THAT YOUR BEST EFFORT IS APPLIED WHEN FILLING OUT THE APPLICATION.
THE TRANSCRIPT PACKAGE The Guidance Office is responsible for submitting the school portion, a.k.a the Transcript Package. 2 steps need to be completed by each senior. Step #1 Every senior must request that their transcripts and recommendation be sent to each college through Naviance and Common Application. NOTE: In the rare instance that a college does not use the Common Application but uses their own application instead, the guidance office can still send your transcripts, etc., through Naviance if the college accepts school documents electronically. If they do not accept documents electronically, the guidance office will mail your school documents to those specific colleges. Step #2 Every senior must request that a copy of his/her high school transcript be sent to every college to which you are applying by completing a Transcript Package Request Form for each college. Transcript Package Request Forms may be obtained in the Guidance Office or you may make copies from the form below. The secretary will prepare the Transcript Package which includes: your high school transcript of grades 9-11, senior grades, Secondary School Report, guidance counselor letter of recommendation, and Matignon s School Profile. Colleges require that SAT or ACT scores be sent directly from the College Board or ACT. So, make sure that you have your test scores sent to all of your colleges that require SAT/ACT. This is accomplished by logging onto your College Board/ACT account and requesting your scores be sent to those colleges. There will be a fee charged by the College Board for this service. It is your responsibility to know the requirements of the individual colleges. The deadline for requesting a Transcript Package Request Form is at least two weeks prior to the application deadline. For example, if you are applying to a college with a deadline of November 3 (early action), then you need to submit your Transcript Package Request Form by October 19, However, please note - 12/04/15 IS THE DEADLINE FOR REQUESTING YOUR TRANSCRIPT PACKAGE IF YOU WANT YOUR TRANSCRIPT MAILED BEFORE CHRISTMAS VACATION.
TRANSCRIPT PACKAGE - REQUEST FORM NAME YEAR OF GRADUATION COLLEGE COLLEGE ADDRESS CITY STATE ZIP TODAY S DATE APPLICATION DEADLINE Please submit Transcript Package Request Form 2 weeks prior to when you want your transcript mailed to the college.
