Recommended: a good French/English dictionary or online dictionary: WordReference.com CALENDAR DESCRIPTION: This course will cover more detailed grammatical patterns, including verb tenses and their uses. Aural/oral skills will continue to develop through increased use of French in class and laboratory practice. CREDIT & CONTACT HOURS: 5 credits/5 hours per week DELIVERY MODE(S): The delivery mode will consist of lectures explaining grammatical concepts, vocabulary, and cultural elements as well as group and individual oral, written, and reading exercises reinforcing these concepts. In preparation for exams, most of our in-class time will focus on the essential Contextes, Structures, Vocabulaire, and Expressions utiles of Promenades Chapters 6-10. Students will be introduced to the Roman-photo, Lecture culturelle, Synthèse, Écriture and

Savoir-Faire sections, work on practice quizzes, and become capable of working independently both inside and outside of class. In addition, a combined Workbook/Lab manual with online reference is to be completed by students and provides opportunity for repetition and selfcorrection. The course moves at a rapid pace as it covers approximately the same content in two courses compared to the three-course French 10, 20, and 30 high school program. OBJECTIVES: In FR 0130, the primary objective is to develop skills in all four language areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Upon successful course completion, students will have knowledge, understanding, and competency in these four areas. You will learn basic vocabulary, grammar, common expression for conversation, and simple sentence structures, including how to ask questions and how to answer then in the present, the future, and the past. LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of the semester, the student who completes this course will be able to: read and understand sentences, conversations, and paragraphs on topics of daily life write sentences and paragraphs using vocabulary, basic grammar and past verb tenses on topics of daily life using a variety of formats (interview, brochure, story, critique, letter) and in response to questions understand simple monologues and conversations relating to daily activities speak and interact using basic vocabulary, grammatical structures, and past verb tenses to express themselves on daily topics such as celebrations, holidays, home life, food, and health understand common cultural expressions and appreciate the French culture in a diverse Francophone world TRANSFERABILITY: UA, UC, UL, AU, GMU, CU, CUC, KUC *Students are ultimately responsible to confirm course transferability and credit through the online ACAT guide. ** A grade of D or D+ may not be acceptable for transfer to other post-secondary institutions. Workbook/Video Manual, Lab Manual and supplementary online activities Language acquisition depends on contact with and repeated use of concepts taught in class. The Workbook/Video Manual and Lab Manual are accessible online and are to completed and submitted on the Unit Exam date for grading. The online Supersite provides many additional activities to support you with many possible opportunities to hear, speak, and read French. Workbooks are graded online. 2. Unit Compositions/Écriture The topic specific writing assignments are listed below and should be enriched with vocabulary and grammar learned within each unit. The Écriture compositions are due in class, with name and date, on the Unit Exam date for grading. Unit exams/tests d unités There are 5 units and each unit will take about two weeks to cover. Upon completion of each unit, students will gain feedback on their progress through a written unit exam. (Units 6-10).

4. Final Exam A final comprehensive exam consisting of written and listening parts will be scheduled by the Registrar. The oral portion of the Final exam will take place with a partner during the last week of classes. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Attendance, Participation, and French Club Cultural Activities- As new language structures are introduced in every class, attendance and participation are vital. Your attendance, punctuality, participation, and contribution to creating a positive interactive learning environment will affect your learning and contribute to your grades. In case of an unavoidable absence, please notify the instructor. Students are responsible to cover all work missed. **IMPORTANT: Participation and attendance is worth 10%. Students are permitted 1 absence without penalty. Thereafter, students will lose 1% for each absence to a maximum of 8%. The remaining 2% of the participation mark will be attributed for attendance to at least 2 cultural activities of the GPRC French Club (French movie nights, the French Centre Open Door sessions, cultural receptions, etc.) The French Club cultural activities schedule will be posted at a later date at GPRC French Club/Club français on Facebook. 2. Practice Language acquisition depends on contact with and use of the language. Avail yourself of every possible opportunity to hear, speak, and read French (Promenades Supersite, GPRC French Club, TV, radio, magazines, etc). Respect Out of courtesy and respect for all class members, it is necessary that students only access cell phones outside of class time.
