Turn on the projector, then the computer. The interactive whiteboard draws power from the computer and will be activated automatically. You'll know the whiteboard has power when the Ready Light on the right side of the SMART Pen Tray turns red. Log on using the computer keyboard. When the Ready Light on the pen tray turns green, the computer and interactive whiteboard have established communication. The whiteboard is now touch sensitive and you can open any application available on the attached computer. Orienting the SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard You should orient your interactive whiteboard when setting it up, or if either the projector or interactive whiteboard has been moved since you last used it. 1. Press and hold both pen tray buttons until the orientation interface appears. 2. Press the SMART Board icon in the Microsoft Windows Notification Area, located in the bottom right of your screen. 3. Select Orient from SMART Board Tools. 4. Begin orientation at the upper left corner. Press your finger or pen squarely in the center of each red cross in the order indicated by the white, diamond-shaped background.
Controlling Projected Applications Use your finger the same way you would use the mouse to control applications on the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. For tasks that require a double-click, press the whiteboard twice in rapid succession. For tasks that require a right-click, press the Right Mouse button on the pen tray. Your next press will be recognized as a right-click. You can also press and hold the area of the screen you would like the interactive whiteboard to recognize as a right-click. Writing and Erasing Annotations Pick up a pen from the pen tray to write on the interactive whiteboard. You can write over the desktop or any open application. When writing, press firmly and consistently on the whiteboard and avoid resting your hand on the surface. The cursor will reappear when you return the pen to the pen tray and you'll regain touch control. If you return the pen to the pen tray without capturing the annotation, your annotation will disappear the next time you touch the screen. Pick up the eraser from the pen tray. Move the eraser in a smooth motion over your annotations to erase them. The interactive whiteboard only recognizes the last tool removed from the pen tray. For example, if you already have a pen in your hand when you pick up the eraser, the whiteboard will assume that you want to erase. Sympodium Interactive Pen Display The SMART Sympodium interactive pen display is a pen-equipped computer monitor that allows you to write electronic notes on the computer screen and to control your computer while facing your class. The Sympodium interactive screen replaces the computer monitor and displays the computer desktop image. Using the attached pen stylus, you simply touch the screen to control software applications, write notes, or annotate directly over the computer image. This computer image is simultaneously displayed on our classroom s large screen computer projection system, allowing your students to easily follow along. The required SMART Board software is installed on the computer and allows you to write over any computer application and to edit your notes. It can also turn your computer screen into a fully functioning 1
whiteboard. The software comes with a wide range of presentation tools for controlling the way in which information is highlighted, revealed, and displayed on the screen. You can capture and save all your work or notes directly to a file, or export as a webpage. This file can be e- mailed, posted online or saved as a PDF or image file. Classroom Sympodiums: Our classroom Sympodiums are permanently installed on teaching stations and are located in the Sullivan Technology Center rooms 106, 109, 202, 204, 302, 304, 309, 310, and 311. The Sympodiums in these rooms are each connected to a computer permanently installed within the teaching station. The computer already includes the necessary SmartBoard software and is ready to use. The required SmartBoard software is already installed on each of the computers attached to our Sympodiums. Your audience will see your writing projected onto a large screen as you deliver prepared or impromptu material. You can still work with the software you re used to such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, or even your Web browser and save all your work afterwards. The Interactive Pen Display The interactive pen display has three sets of buttons and indicators. A row of display control buttons fine-tune display properties. There is also a group of pen-tool buttons and a set of function buttons. The tethered pen acts like a mouse because it allows you to control your applications, but it also enables you to write or draw in digital ink over any application. Checking the Status of the Interactive Pen Display The power indicator glows blue when the unit is receiving power and a video signal. If it glows orange, ensure that your computer is turned on and that the cable is correctly connected to the interactive pen display and the computer. The status indicator turns blue when the tethered pen touches the screen. If it doesn t turn blue, make sure that the USB cable is connected to the interactive pen display and the computer, and ensure that SMART Board software is running on the computer. Orienting the Sympodium You should orient your Sympodium if the pen and written content are not synced. 2

Function Buttons The function buttons provide quick access to a number of frequently used tools. Press a function button to launch the On-Screen Keyboard, the Floating Tools toolbar or the Capture toolbar. Open Notebook software to help you organize, save and share notes. There are two right mouse buttons to facilitate ease of use for both right- and left-handed users. NOTE: When you press the right mouse button only the next pen contact will be a right-click. Subsequent touches of your pen will register as a left-click. Pen-Tool Buttons Use the pen-tool buttons to select a digital ink color, erase digital ink or return to mouse mode. Writing and Erasing Notes To write over your desktop image, pick up the tethered pen, press a pen-tool button to select your digital ink color, and write on the interactive display. Select another pen-tool button to change your ink color. To erase your notes, select the eraser, and move the pen in a smooth motion over your notes. Press the left mouse button to return the pen to mouse mode. Saving Your Notes You can easily save notes on your Sympodium interactive pen display for future reference. Save your notes, screen captures, images and other work to a single file that can be opened in both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Notes and graphics are saved as objects that can be manipulated and reorganized. 1. Select one of the display s pen-tool buttons, and write your notes or draw on the interactive screen. The Floating Tools toolbar will appear. 2. To save a selected area of your screen, press the Area Capture button on the Floating Tools toolbar. Touch the display with the pen, and without releasing pressure, drag the selection box to outline the area you want to capture. 3. Notebook software will open automatically and display your notes on a new Notebook page, which you can then save as a Notebook file or export as a PDF NOTE: If the Floating Tools toolbar does not appear when you select one of the pen display s pen-tool buttons, you may be working in an Ink Aware 3
application (e.g., Microsoft Word). If the application is Ink Aware, these buttons will be available in the application s own toolbar. Notebook Software Notebook Software acts as an electronic notebook that can be used to edit, save and distribute information written on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard.
