Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission Response Working Group Stockholm, Sweden, 15-17 March 2016 RESPONSE 21-2016 Document title BONUS SWERA - Sunken Wreck Environmental Risk Assessment Code 8-1 Category INF Agenda Item 8 - Wrecks and other submerged hazardous objects Submission date 24.2.2016 Submitted by Finland Reference Information The EU BONUS INNO funded project SWERA - Sunken Wreck Environmental Risk Assessment will be terminated in April 2016. This new and innovative approach combined the theoretical risk assessment method developed at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, with an oil removal risk tool by SYKE and Alfons Håkans Ltd, Finland. The project also consisted of studies on wreck registers by Tallinn Technical University, Estonia. Novel salvage support tool concept was developed by Alfons Håkans LtD. Compilation of the reports and main findings will be made by the research consortium later this spring. The innovative salvage toolbox concept developed in this project is demonstrated by a video shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2axyx89nl10&feature=youtu.be For more information please visit http://www.syke.fi/projects/swera. Annex 1 Brief overview on the Wrecks and SWERA - presentation made in the Wreck Diving Day 13.2.2016. Action requested The Meeting is invited to take note of the information. Page 1 of 1

Main Objectives / Results 1.) Wreck survey selecting the primary targets (high potential for oil pollution, New Data Base 2.) Validation of the wreck model (Vraka) 3.) Modification of the existing wreck model to also include the risk assessment of different salvage operation alternatives 4.)
