CAUTION When you move the mahine, grasp the side handholds that are under the sanner. DO NOT arry the mahine y holding it at the ottom. Keep a minimum gap around the mahine as shown in the illustration. 3.95 in. (100 mm) 9.85 in. (250 mm) 3.95 in. (100 mm) 3.55 in. (90 mm) The omponents inluded in the ox may differ depending on your ountry. Please save the original pakaging should you need to ship the mahine in future. If for any reason you must ship your mahine, arefully repak the mahine in the original pakaging to avoid any damage during transit. The mahine should e adequately insured with the arrier. For how to repak the mahine, see Paking and shipping the mahine in the Advaned User's Guide. The interfae ale is not a standard aessory. Buy the appropriate interfae ale for the interfae you want to use (USB or Network). USB ale It is reommended to use a USB 2.0 ale (Type A/B) that is no longer than 6 feet (2 meters). DO NOT onnet the interfae ale at this time. Conneting the interfae ale is done during the MFL-Pro installation proess. Network ale Use a straight-through Category5 (or greater) twisted-pair ale for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet Network. 2

2 Remove the paking material from the mahine d Lift the elasti and off the drum. IMPORTANT DO NOT onnet the AC power ord yet. a Remove the paking tape from the outside of the mahine and the film overing the sanner glass. Open the front over. e Pull the paper strip to remove the protetive material as shown in the illustration. Remove the Silia Pak from the inside of the mahine. f Take out the drum unit and toner artridge assemly. CAUTION DO NOT eat the Silia Pak. Please disard. If ingested seek medial attention immediately. 3

g Gently shake it from side to side several times to distriute the toner evenly inside the assemly. a 3 Load paper in the paper tray Pull the paper tray ompletely out of the mahine. h Put the drum unit and toner artridge assemly ak in the mahine. While pressing the green paper-guide release lever a, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are loading in the tray. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots. i Close the front over of the mahine. 1 4

For Legal or Folio size paper, press the release utton in the ottom of the paper tray and then pull out the ak of the paper tray. (Legal or Folio size paper are not availale in some regions.) d Put paper in the tray and make sure: The paper is elow the maximum paper mark ( ) a. Over filling the paper tray will ause paper jams. The side to e printed on must e fae down. The paper guides touh the sides of the paper so it will feed properly. 1 Fan the stak of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds. e Put the paper tray firmly ak in the mahine. Make sure that it is ompletely inserted into the mahine. For more information aout reommended paper, see Reommended paper and print media in the Basi User s Guide. 5

a 4 Connet the power ord and telephone line IMPORTANT DO NOT onnet the interfae ale yet. Connet the AC power ord to the mahine, and then plug it into an AC power outlet. Turn on the mahine s power swith. WARNING The mahine must e grounded using a 3-prong plug. Sine the mahine is grounded through the power outlet, you an protet yourself from potentially hazardous eletrial onditions on the telephone network y keeping the power ord onneted to your mahine when you onnet it to a telephone line. Similarly, you an protet yourself when you want to move your mahine y disonneting the telephone line first and then the power ord. If you are sharing one telephone line with an external telephone, onnet it as shown elow. Before you onnet the external telephone, remove the protetive ap a from the EXT. jak on the mahine. 1 2 Connet the telephone line ord. Connet one end of the telephone line ord to the jak on the mahine marked LINE and the other end to a modular wall jak. 1 1 Extension telephone 2 External telephone IMPORTANT The telephone line ord MUST e onneted to the jak on the mahine marked LINE. 6

If you are sharing one telephone line with an external telephone answering mahine, onnet it as shown elow. Before you onnet the external telephone answering mahine, remove the protetive ap a from the EXT. jak on the mahine. 5 Choose a Press Menu, 0, 0. your language (if needed) Press a or to hoose your language. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 1 Set the reeive mode to External TAD if you have an external answering mahine. See Choose the orret Reeive Mode on page 8. For additional details, see Conneting an external TAD (telephone answering devie) in the Basi User s Guide. 7

6 Choose the orret Reeive Mode The orret Reeive Mode is determined y the external devies and telephone susrier servies (Voie Mail, Distintive Ring, et.) you have (or will e using) on the same line as the Brother mahine. Will you e using a Distintive Ring numer for reeiving faxes? Brother uses the term Distintive Ring ut telephone ompanies may have other names for this servie suh as Custom Ringing, RingMaster, Personalized Ring, Teen Ring, Ident-A-Call, and Smart Ring. See Distintive Ring in the Basi User s Guide for instrution on setting up your mahine using this feature. Will you e using Voie Mail on the same telephone line as your Brother mahine? If you have Voie Mail on the same telephone line as your Brother mahine, there is a strong possiility that Voie Mail and the Brother mahine will onflit with eah other when reeiving inoming alls. See Voie Mail in the Basi User s Guide for instrutions on setting up your mahine using this servie. Will you e using a Telephone Answering Devie on the same telephone line as your Brother mahine? Your external telephone answering devie (TAD) will automatially answer every all. Voie messages are stored on the external TAD and fax messages are printed. Choose External TAD as your reeive mode. See the instrutions elow. Will you e using your Brother mahine on a dediated fax line? Your mahine automatially answers every all as a fax. Choose Fax Only as your reeive mode. See the instrutions elow. Will you e using your Brother mahine on the same line as your telephone? Do you want to reeive voie alls and faxes automatially? The Fax/Tel reeive mode is used when sharing the Brother mahine and your telephone on the same line. Choose Fax/Tel as your reeive mode. See the instrutions elow. Important : You annot reeive voie messages on either Voie Mail or an answering mahine when hoosing the Fax/Tel mode. Do you expet to reeive very few faxes? Choose Manual as your reeive mode. You ontrol the telephone line and must answer every all yourself. See the instrutions elow. For details, see Using reeive modes in the Basi User s Guide. a Press Menu, 0, 1. Press a or to hoose the reeive mode. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 8

7 Set the LCD ontrast (if needed) If you are having diffiulty reading the LCD, try hanging the ontrast setting. a Press Menu, 1, 5. Press to inrease the ontrast. OR Press d to derease the ontrast. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. d e f Enter the two digits for the day on the dial pad, and then press OK. Date&Time Day:25 (e.g. Enter 2, 5 for 25th.) Enter the time in 24-hour format on the dial pad, and then press OK. Date&Time Time:15:25 (e.g. Enter 1, 5, 2, 5 for 3:25 P.M.) Press Stop/Exit. 8 Set the date and time The mahine displays the time, and if you set up the station ID the date and time will e added to eah fax you send. a Press Menu, 0, 2, 1. Enter the last two digits of the year on the dial pad, and then press OK. Date&Time Year:2011 (e.g. Enter 1, 1 for 2011.) Enter the two digits for the month on the dial pad, and then press OK. Date&Time Month:03 (e.g. Enter 0, 3 for Marh.) 9

9 Set your Station ID The mahine displays the date and time, and if you set up the Station ID, it will add it to eah fax you send. a Press Menu, 0, 3. d Enter your fax numer (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press OK. Station ID Fax: Enter your telephone numer (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press OK. (If your telephone numer and fax numer are the same, enter the same numer again.) Station ID Tel: Use the dial pad to enter your name (up to 20 haraters), and then press OK. Station ID Name: See the following hart for entering your name. If you need to enter a harater that is on the same key as the last harater, press to move the ursor to the right. If you entered a letter inorretly and want to hange it, press d or to move the ursor to the inorret harater, press Clear. e Press key One time Two times Press Stop/Exit. If you make a mistake and want to start again, press Stop/Exit and go ak to step a. (USA only) The Telephone Consumer Protetion At of 1991 makes it unlawful for any person to use a omputer or eletroni devie to send any message via a telephone fax mahine unless suh messages learly ontain, in a margin at the top or ottom of eah transmitted page, or on the first page of the transmission, the date and time it is sent and an identifiation of the usiness or other entity or other individual sending the message and the telephone numer of the sending mahines or suh usiness, other entity or individual. To program this information into your mahine, see Set the date and time on page 9 and Set your Station ID on page 10. 10

10 Fax Transmission Report 13 Dial Prefix Your Brother mahine is equipped with a Transmission Verifiation Report that an e used as onfirmation that you sent a fax. This report lists the name or fax numer of the reeiving party, the date, time, and duration of the transmission, the numer of pages transmitted, and whether or not the transmission was suessful. If you want to use the Fax Transmission Report feature see Printing reports in the Advaned User's Guide. 11 Set tone or pulse dialing mode (Canada only) Your mahine omes set for Tone dialing servie. If you have Pulse dialing servie (rotary), you need to hange the dialing mode. a Press Menu, 0, 4. Press a or to hoose Pulse (or Tone). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. The dial prefix setting will automatially dial a predefined numer efore every fax numer you dial. For example: If your phone system requires a 9 to dial an outside numer this setting will automatially dial 9 for every fax you send. a Press Menu, 0, 5 (for Canada, press 6). Enter the prefix numer (up to 5 digits) on the dial pad, and then press OK. You an use the numer 0 to 9, #, l and!. (Press Hook to display!.) You annot use! with any other numers or haraters. If your telephone system requires a timed reak reall (hookflash), press Hook to enter the reak. If the pulse dialing mode is on, # and l are not availale to use. (Canada only) Press Stop/Exit. 12 Set the telephone line ompatiility If you are onneting the mahine to a VoIP servie (over the Internet) you need to hange the ompatiility setting. If you are using an analog telephone line you an skip this step. a Press Menu, 2, 0, 1. Press a or to hoose Basi(for VoIP). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 11

14 Automati Daylight Savings Time 15 Send in the Produt Registration and Test Sheet (USA only) You an set the mahine to hange automatially for daylight savings time. It will reset itself forward one hour in the Spring and akward one hour in the Fall. a Press Menu, 0, 2, 2. Press a or to hoose On (or Off). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. You an also register your produt online using the On-Line Registration link from the installation CD-ROM or visit http://www.rother.om/registration/. a Fill out the Produt Registration and Test Sheet. Put the sheet fae up in the ADF (Automati Doument Feeder) or fae down on the sanner glass. Make sure (FAX) is illuminated in Blue. d Enter the toll-free fax numer: 1-877-268-9575. e Press Start. You will reeive a onfirmation fax of your Produt Registration. 12

16 Choose your onnetion type These installation instrutions are for Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home/Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Ma OS X (versions 10.4.11, 10.5.x and 10.6.x). For Windows Server 2003/2003 x64 Edition/2008/2008 R2, visit your model page at http://solutions.rother.om/. USB Windows For USB Interfae Users (Windows 2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition/Windows Vista /Windows 7) 17 Before you install 18 Install MFL-Pro Suite a Make sure that your omputer is ON and you are logged on with Administrator rights. IMPORTANT If there are any programs running, lose them. The sreens may differ depending on your operating system. The installation CD-ROM inludes SanSoft PaperPort 12SE. This software supports Windows XP (SP3 or greater), XP Professional x64 Edition (SP2 or greater), Windows Vista (SP2 or greater) and Windows 7. Update to the latest Windows Servie Pak efore installing MFL-Pro Suite. For Windows 2000 (SP4 or greater) users, when the SanSoft PaperPort 11SE download sreen appears during the installation of MFL-Pro Suite, follow the on-sreen instrutions. Turn off the mahine and make sure the USB interfae ale is NOT onneted to the mahine. If you have already onneted the ale, disonnet it. a d Put the installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name sreen appears, hoose your mahine. If the language sreen appears, hoose your language. If the Brother sreen does not appear automatially, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-lik the CD-ROM ion, and then doule-lik start.exe. Clik Initial Installation and then Install MFL-Pro Suite. Clik Yes if you aept the liense agreements. If the installation does not ontinue automatially, open the top menu again y ejeting and then reinserting the CD-ROM or doule-lik the start.exe program from the root folder, and ontinue from step to install MFL-Pro Suite. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, when the User Aount Control sreen appears, lik Allow or Yes. If you want to install the PS driver (BR-Sript3 printer driver), hoose Custom Install and then follow the on-sreen instrutions. Follow the on-sreen instrutions until this sreen appears. 14

USB Windows e Connet the USB ale to the USB onnetor marked with the symol on your mahine and then onnet the ale to your omputer. f Turn the mahine on, and follow the on-sreen instrutions to omplete setup. IMPORTANT DO NOT anel any of the sreens during the installation. It may take a few seonds for all sreens to appear. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, when the Windows Seurity sreen appears, lik the hek ox and lik Install to omplete the installation orretly. If an error message appears during the software installation, run the Installation Diagnostis loated in Start/All Programs/Brother/MFC-XXXX (where MFC-XXXX is your model name). Windows USBMaintosh Finish The installation is now omplete. Depending on your seurity settings, a Windows Seurity or antivirus software window may appear when using the mahine or its software. Please allow or permit the window to ontinue. XML Paper Speifiation Printer Driver The XML Paper Speifiation Printer Driver is the most suitale driver for Windows Vista and Windows 7 when printing from appliations that use the XML Paper Speifiation douments. Please download the latest driver y aessing the Brother Solutions Center at http://solutions.rother.om/. 15

USB Maintosh For USB Interfae Users (Ma OS X 10.4.11-10.6.x) 17 Before you install 18 Install MFL-Pro Suite a Make sure your mahine is onneted to the power and your Maintosh is ON. You must e logged on with Administrator rights. IMPORTANT For Ma OS X 10.4.10 users, upgrade to Ma OS X 10.4.11-10.6.x. (For the latest drivers and information on the Ma OS X you are using, visit http://solutions.rother.om/.) a Put the installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Doule-lik the Start Here OSX ion. Follow the on-sreen instrutions. If you want to install the PS driver (BR-Sript3 printer driver), please go to the Brother Solutions Center at http://solutions.rother.om/, lik Downloads on your model page and visit FAQ's for setup instrutions. Connet the USB ale to the USB onnetor marked with the symol on your mahine and then onnet the ale to your Maintosh. It may take a few minutes for installation to omplete. Follow the on-sreen instrutions until this sreen appears. Choose your mahine from the list, and then lik OK. Make sure your mahine s power swith is on. d When this sreen appears, lik Next. The installation of MFL-Pro Suite is now omplete. Go to step 19 on page 17. 16

Wireless Network Maintosh Install the Drivers & Software (Ma OS X 10.4.11-10.6.x) 20 Before you install Choose Wireless Network Connetion and lik Next. Make sure your mahine is onneted to the power and your Maintosh is ON. You must e logged on with Administrator rights. 21 a IMPORTANT For Ma OS X 10.4.10 users, upgrade to Ma OS X 10.4.11-10.6.x. Wireless Network Maintosh You an find your mahine s MAC Address (Ethernet Address) and IP Address y printing out the Network Configuration Report. See Print the Network Configuration Report on page 39. If this sreen appears lik OK. Enter a name for your Maintosh in Display Name up to 15 haraters long and lik OK. Go to step e. 22 Download and install Presto! PageManager When Presto! PageManager is installed OCR apaility is added to Brother ControlCenter2. You an easily san, share and organize photos and douments using Presto! PageManager. On the Brother Support sreen, lik Presto! PageManager and follow the on-sreen instrutions. If you want to use the mahine s SCAN key to san over the network, you must hek the Register your omputer with the "San To" funtion on the mahine ox. The name you enter will appear on the mahine s LCD when you press (SCAN) and hoose a san option. (For more information, see Network Sanning in the Software User's Guide.) e When this sreen appears, lik Next. The installation of MFL-Pro Suite is now omplete. For Network Users We Based Management (we rowser) The Brother print server is equipped with a we server that allows you to monitor its status or hange some of its onfiguration settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protool). The default User Name is admin and the default password is aess. You an use a we rowser to hange this password. We reommend Mirosoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or greater) or Firefox 3.0 (or greater) for Windows and Safari 3.0 (or greater) for Maintosh. Please also make sure that JavaSript and ookies are always enaled in whihever rowser you use. To use a we rowser, you will need to know the IP address of the print server. The IP address of the print server is listed on the Network Configuration Report. a Open your rowser. Type http://mahine s IP address/ into your rowser s address ar (where mahine s IP address is the IP address of the printer or the print server name). For example http://192.168.1.2/ Print the Network Configuration Report You an print the Network Configuration Report to onfirm the urrent network settings. a Turn the mahine on and wait until it is in the Ready state. Press Menu, 5, 6. d Press Start. The mahine will print the urrent network settings. Press Stop/Exit. Restore the network settings to fatory default To restore all network settings of the internal Print/San server to fatory default, please follow the steps elow. a Make sure the mahine is not operating, then disonnet all the ales from the mahine (exept the power ord). Press Menu, 6, 0. d Press 1 to hoose Reset. Press 1 to hoose Yes. The mahine will restart, re-onnet ales one this is omplete. See We Based Management in the Network User's Guide. 39
