Studien- und Prüfungsordnung Rules and Regulations of the course of study every course of study has a Studien- und Prüfungsordnung (StPO) when a StPO is changed it only affects new students, you keep the one you enrolled under it regulates aspects from course content to how to write your M.A. thesis! every StPO is available online: http://www.uni-marburg.de/administration/amtlich/94_2010.pdf you should know your Studienordnung! 4
Possible problems and errors rule of thumb: errors do not correct themselves! if something does not work, take action immediately! too late is too late! 5

Registration for the M.A.-Thesis registration for the thesis is mandatory you have to use the forms provided by the examinations office the procedure can be a bit complicated we will now look at each step and explain the forms 9
starting the process find an advisor for your thesis find a second advisor the second advisor does not have to be a professor they can also be someone who: has at least an M.A. themselves works at a university has taught the subject before next: agree on a broad area or subject with your advisor 10

further procedure hand in the registration forms at the examinations office we will prepare your documents we ll send you an email as soon as you can come and pick up your letter of admission to the M.A. thesis come to examinations office (during opening hours) there we will give you your topic, you can start working on your thesis from that moment: time is running 13
problems with the topic assigned? if you have a problem working on the topic you have been assigned: you can return the topic within the first 2 weeks you then get a new topic from your advisor (and a new deadline date) can be done only once if you only need to change a detail in your topic (spelling, capitalization, italics &c.) contact examinations office immediately 14
handing in your thesis you have to hand in on the day stated on your letter of admission at the very latest! 1 day later: you will be graded fail automatically hand in 2 copies of thesis, if digital elements: 2 data carriers during opening hours of examinations office (Block D, 7 th floor) thesis has to be bound (softcover is ok, binder is not ok) title has to be exactly! as stated on form from your advisor no working title thesis and data carriers remain on file at examinations office (for 5 years) 15
handing in your thesis via postal mail if you cannot hand in your thesis in person you can send it via postal mail (not via email!) 2 copies etc. as before your risk! if thesis does not arrive, you fail send as registered letter with personal delivery ( Übergabeeinschreiben ) keep receipt from post office has to be sent before/on due date, may arrive later 16
after handing in the thesis after you have handed in your thesis: your advisors write a report on your thesis (within 4 weeks of you handing in) after that: oral exam as soon as ALL your grades have been entered into the onlinesystem, we can start on your degree certificate 17
Degree certificate and other documents preparing degree certificates usually take 8 weeks after handing in the thesis IF: all grades have been entered into the system no other problems arise if you need anything earlier contact us immediately all documents in German, but you will receive translations as well 18
Picking up your degree certificate we will contact you as soon as you can pick up your documents at the examinations office handing out documents: only to you in person sending documents via postal mail: only as exception your risk: there is only ever 1 original, any further duplicate copies (i.e Zweitschrift ) will cost you 50,- each you have to pay for all postal fees: we need an envelope with correct amount of stamps addressed to yourself 19
Exam ceremony every semester: exam ceremony in the great hall of the old university building all graduates are invited there may be problems receiving the invitation, you are invited anyway you can bring as many guests as you like, all guests have to be registered in advance with the examinations office admission is 5,- per person 20
Accessing your file you have the right to access your file at the examinations office and to read your advisors reports if you d like to do that: file a written request with the examinations office (email is ok) ( Antrag auf Akteneinsicht ) arrange a date to access your file with us 21
