Diesel Engine Air Intake Shutoff Valves Model RDS1 Swing Gate Valve Overview If flammable gas or vapor is present in the atmosphere surrounding a diesel engine, it can be ingested into the engine and become an ungoverned fuel supply. This ungoverned fuel can result in runaway engine overspeed, potentially leading to dangerous mechanical failure or an explosion. The Roda Deaco RDS1 Swing Gate Valve is a compact air intake shutoff valve that provides emergency overspeed shutdown of a diesel engine. The RDS1 Swing Gate Valve can be triggered to close, which starves the engine of air and shuts down the engine. Operation The Model RDS1 is a compact swing gate design air intake shutoff valve available with either electric or mechanical actuation. Actuation of the Model RDS1 closes the valve s sealing element which shuts off intake air flow into the engine. The RDS1 can be used in fully automatic or manual shutdown systems. Refer to the Roda Deaco Selection Guide to determine the appropriate system and actuation for your application. Valve Selection The RDS1 Swing Gate Valve can be used in applications where the air intake line is 1 /2 to 2 1 /2 inches (15-65 mm) in diameter. The RDS1 Swing Gate Valve can be mounted in vertical or horizontal orientations and airflow through the valve can be in either direction. When specifying the valve, note the clearance requirements for the valve with the geometry of the engine and intake line for your application. Valve Selection Continued Valve Attachment Mechanism The hose attachment is the standard attachment mechanism. However, additional attachments are available including O-Ring, V-Clamp, Flange, and engine specific adapters. Examples are shown below. To accommodate the installation requirements for the wide variety of diesel engine applications, the size and connection types on the valve body and the valve cover are specified separately. Hose Attachment Uses sections of flexible hose and band clamps to attach the valve to intake line. Several types of V-clamp connections are available. O-Rings are used to seal rigid air intake line connections. Valve Features Selection Valve Actuation Type Electric actuation The Diesel Engine Air Intake Shutoff Valve has two actuation methods: electric and mechanical. Please refer to the Roda Deaco System Selection Guide for complete descriptions of the systems to help determine the proper actuation required for your application. Electric Actuation The electrically actuated RDS1 is an energize-toclose valve. It operates using either 12 VDC or 24 VDC power. The valve will automatically reset after the engine stops and power is removed. The electrically actuated RDS1 valve is designed for use in the systems indicated below: pull cable mounting bracket Automatic Electric Overspeed RPM Detection with Manual Override Manual Electric System Mechanical Actuation Mechanical actuation The mechanically actuated RDS1 can be operated by using either a remote cable pull system or direct operator action on the valve. The mechanically actuated RDS1 is reset manually. The mechanically actuated RDS1 valve is designed for use in the systems below: Remote Cable Pull Actuated System Direct Actuated Valve Valve Intake Air Temperature Rating Temperature range Standard range -40 F to 221 F -40 C to 105 C The RDS1 Swing Gate Valve can be used on intake lines of naturally aspirated or turbo-charged engines where air intake line temperatures do not exceed 221 F (105 C) at the valve. Valve Feature Option Pneumatic Reset A pneumatic cylinder can be added to the valve to provide remote reset capability for mechanically actuated valves. page 5
Actuation Kits Actuation kits are provided with each system sold. The actuation kit contains hardware required to properly install and integrate the specified shutdown system into the diesel engine application.
