1 YEAR IN ENGLISH 5 MODULES = 12 WORKSHOPS + INTERNSHIP The DESIGN POSTGRADUATE PRO- GRAM was created in January 2000 by Franc Pairon, international expert in fashion pedagogy and founder of the ATELIER DE STYLISME ET CRÉATION DE MODE at LA CAMBRE in Brussels. Every year the program recruits designers from all over the world chosen for their strong personality, their creativity and their willingness to develop concrete projects in direct partnership with industry and the renowned fashion houses. The international character of the class engenders a high level of creative emulation within the group. This course is unmatched in terms of teaching, creates privileged links with companies and is 100% in touch with the reality of the professional world. Our method is to declare a state of emergency! Teaching fashion designers the art of working within limitations, opening the minds of tomorrow s managers to the complexities of design, and convincing manufacturers to develop prototypes with our designers. Each project is followed up by professional experts, providing a natural and immediate link with the sector, and a perfect matching between the skills of the designers and the needs of the market. To date, the program has trained more than 170 designers. The IFM s DESIGN POSTGRADUATE Major in Fashion brings together 10 to 12 designers selected for their creativity and desire to develop concrete field projects in direct collaboration with high-end industrial partners and luxury fashion houses. Every year, companies actively participate in the creation of prototypes : Shoes with ACCESSOIRE DIFFUSION, AIGLE, BALLIN PROJECT, BERLUTI, ERAM, JM WESTON, KICKERS, LOUIS VUITTON, MARTINEZ LIERAH, UNITED NUDE, VEJA Garments with manufacturers working with BALENCIAGA, CELINE, CHANEL, HERMES, KENZO, LOUIS VUITTON, SAINT LAURENT PARIS The IFM graduates are working with renowned houses. Our fashion designers are either working with companies including MARTIN MARGIELA, CHRISTIAN DIOR COUTURE, KENZO, CARVEN, LANVIN, BALENCIAGA, VERSACE, ROBERTO CAVALLI, CACHAREL, MARC JACOBS, CERRUTI, TARA JARMON, KARL LAGERFELD, RUE DU MAIL, BERNHARD WILLHELM or have set up their own business. Recruitment is highly selective. Every year no fewer than 250 applications are examined and the projects of approximately 60 candidates are submitted to an external jury for a final selection of 10 to 12 designers in all. The program is by essence international and is entirely taught in English. THE MODULES The research modules create the underlying framework for the teaching. Each module consists of several additional workshops and master classes, all followed up by professional experts, providing a natural and immediate link with the sector, and a perfect matching between the skills of the designers and the needs of the market. The choice and order of workshops are not decided arbitrarily. They enable the students to become familiar with a variety of different fields in one year and to meet major players (e.g. manufacturers, managers and designers) essential to their future career. MODULE #1: PERSONAL GARMENT COLLECTION DESIGN 2D & 3D & PROTOTYPES Design a personal collection of over 60 styles. Establish materials, patterns and technical data sheets for the models. Follow up the production of the prototypes within our partner companies. MODULE #2: COLLECTIONS FOR BRANDS (GARMENT & SHOES) DESIGN & PROTOTYPES Create different collections related to the brief given by the companies. Immersion into the values and the creative dimension of a brand. Visit of a production unit. Ensure the development and follow-up of the prototype in the company. Acquire a mastery of all parameters ranging from high technology to pure aesthetics. Organize and rebalance the collection. Presentation of all the research in front of the brand representatives. Selection of the best drawings before production of the prototype. MODULE #3: COMMUNICATION PORTFOLIO CONSTRUCTION & INTERVIEW COACHING Make digital presentations at the end of each workshop. Learn how to communicate your creative universe. Study how to adapt your communication to any actor of the creative chain. Adapt and organize your portfolio to a truly professional tool. Prepare yourself for interviews and meet all the major recruitment actors in the business. MODULE #4: CREATIVE STRATEGY COSTING & BUSINESS PLAN Organise and rebalance collection plans with a view to launching the designed collections. Compare creativity, technical constraints and production costs. Incorporate the components that determine both the up-stream and down-stream price. Analyse the cost of the prototypes. Draft a letter of intent. Define a strategy and develop a financial plan. MODULE #5: ART DIRECTION BRAND NAME & ARTISTIC DIRECTION Explore brand concepts. Analyze the communication policy of Partner brands. Set up a design brief as artistic director. Create consistent, adjustable projects using different visual aids. Develop the capacity of working in a team on photo styling & shoot, color and print workshops and young designers brand identity. PROTOTYPES Companies actively participate in making prototypes with the designers of IFM s DESIGN POSTGRADUATE Major in Fashion. Knowledge of production techniques makes it possible for the designers of the program to create in a more realistic way without sacrificing inventiveness whatsoever. For companies, developing prototypes by working directly with young designers brings a fresh vision, in terms of existing developments as well as of the possibilities their industrial tools may offer. WORKSHOPS MANAGEMENT / DESIGN The presence of both Design and Management Programs at IFM makes it possible to organize work sessions that bring designers and managers together. These workhops cover issues such as creative identity, marketing strategy, brand image and the launch of a new avant-garde fashion concept. INTERNSHIP The year of specialized study is extended by a 3 to 6 months internship within a company. It reinforces contacts between designers and professionals in the industry. Former students have carried out internships in companies such as: BALENCIAGA, CÉLINE, CERRUTI 1881, CHLOÉ, GIVENCHY,ANNE-VALÉRIE HASH, HUSSEIN CHALAYAN, LANVIN, MARTIN MARGIELA, NINA RICCI, & OTHER STORIES... PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVES The IFM is a tremendous career accelerator in the fashion and design sectors. The employability of the students is given top priority. During their year at IFM, the designers are individually assisted by the Recruitment and Career Management Department, which organizes meetings with Human Resources Directors of renowned fashion companies and Couture houses and international headhunters. Over 25 years experience in the field of fashion has enabled IFM to broaden its horizons with a policy of diversification towards other sectors with a high level of added creative value such as accessories, perfumes and cosmetics, luxury, interiors and design. IFM is a state recognized school, a member of the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles and a member of PRES hésam (Pole of Research and Higher Education hautes études Sorbonne arts et métiers). ADMISSION In order to apply for the IFM s DE- SIGN POSTGRADUATE - Major in Fashion, the candidate must have a BA (Bachelor of Arts, or the equivalent according to International standards, from an art/fashion or design school. Exceptions are possible for highlevel creative profiles reinforced by extensive professional experience. Fluent English is required. In order to select students from all around the world, a specific mode of recruitment has been established. The jury members discover the applicant and his or her creative universe on video. In addition, they examine the student s portfolio and a special designed garment on a given theme. Once the entire application has been reviewed, the selection process ends with a remote interview with the applicant, if necessary. TUITION FEES The fees for the year are 11 000 euros*. This covers teaching and prototype development with manufacturers and fashion houses, transport and accommodation for all course trips. Study grants are available depending on financial need. They are made possible by the generous support of the companies that form the Cercle IFM (see below). Additionally, the French Department of Higher Education allows IFM to accept students with grants from the CROUS. THE CERCLE IFM AND SCHOLARSHIPS The Cercle IFM finances the grants available to students on the DESIGN POSTGRADUATE (Fashion, Accessory, Image).
