1. Download ArcGIS Go to https://gissoftware.gis.lu.se to find the download link (accept the agreement to see it). On the download page, download the file ArcGIS 10.3.1.zip. You may also download and install packages from the folder Optional packages but as the name implies, they are not required. 2. Install ArcGIS Unzip the ArcGIS 10.3.1.zip file and enter the unzipped folder. Run install.bat to start the installation. The installation will take several minutes so let it run until it is finished. No interaction is required. 3. Licensing ArcGIS can be licensed in two different ways: Concurrent and Single use. Concurrent use ArcGIS fetches a license from a license server. The license server can only be reached from Lund University IP addresses or if you connect via VPN to Lund University. An Internet connection is required to use ArcGIS. If you do not have a Lund University IP (you are not sitting on the university net) you have to use VPN. See section 4 for instructions on how to install VPN and section 5 for instructions on how to use it. Single use ArcGIS uses a local license so no Internet connection is required to use ArcGIS. A Single use license is valid one year from activation date. Note that after installation, ArcGIS is set to license via Concurrent use. That means it tries to connect to a license server in Lund, Sweden. If it fails to connect you are not using a Lund university IP address (not on the university network) and must use VPN (see section 4 and 5). If you for some reason have trouble using VPN or do not always have your machine connected to the Internet, switch licensing method to Single use (see section 6). Do not get a Single use license if ArcGIS works with Concurrent use and you have no problem being online as you work with ArcGIS.
4. Concurrent use Install VPN client A VPN client lets you connect to an external network and assume an IP address from that network. In other words, it makes it look like your computer is coming from this external network instead of your own. For more information, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/virtual_private_network. Go to https://gissoftware.gis.lu.se to find the download link (accept the agreement to see it). On the download page, download the file VPN.zip. Unzip it and enter the unzipped folder. Run the installer FortiClientOnlineInstaller.exe. Tick the box Yes, I have read and accepted the and click Next.
Click VPN Only. Click Next.
Click Install. Click Finish.
Locate the newly installed VPN client (on the start menu or use the search function) and start it. Click File and then Settings. Click Restore.
Click the small button with three dots and browse to where you unzipped the VPN.zip file. Select the file FortiClient - Windows.conf and then click OK. Wait until you see the dialog below and then click the OK button. You should now have a properly configured VPN client on your machine.
5. Concurrent use Run VPN client Run FortiClient. Make sure LDC (Mobile) is selected. Fill in your username (StiL or Lucat name) and password and click Connect. You should now be connected to Lund University network. To verify this, go to https://www.whatismyip.com. Your IP address consists of four numbers and the first two should be 130.235. If that is the case you are ready to use the ArcGIS license server. When you no longer are using ArcGIS, click the Disconnect button to disconnect from Lund University and close FortiClient.
6. Single use - Overview There are three steps to get a Single use license working. You must go through them all. a. Get a license number, see section 7 b. Activate license number, see section 8 c. Install Single use license on your machine, see section 9 Note that if you uninstall ArcGIS, change hardware, upgrade the operating system (not Windows Update) or format your computer without deauthorizing a Single use license first,it is lost forever. The same thing applies if your system crashes so badly that it cannot be booted. Once you register a Single use license it is bound to that particular computer until it expires or it is deauthorized. Since you can only get one license per year you might end up with a non-functional installation of ArcGIS if you fail to deauthorize. For more information about this, see section 10 7. Single use Get a license number Go to https://gissoftware.gis.lu.se/ and request an authorization number (press the button with the same name). Note that you can only request one authorization file per year from Lund University. Click the button Request authorization number to check out an authorization number. It is displayed on the page with the text Your current authorization number is EVAXXXXXXXXX.
8. Single use Activate license number Go to http://www.esri.com/landing-pages/software/arcgis/arcgis-desktop-student-trial. Log in with your global ESRI account. If you do not have one, create a new account. Provide the license number you got from https://gissoftware.gis.lu.se/ and click Activate ArcGIS.
Select the version you have downloaded/installed (ArcGIS 10.3.1 for Desktop). It is very important that you select the right version because otherwise it will not work. When the activation is done you will receive an email with instructions on how to continue and an option to download the installation media. You do not have to do it again and can continue with the installation of the Single use license (section 9).
9. Single use Install Single use license on your machine Open ArcGIS Administrator and click Desktop (in the left pane). Select Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use and click Authorize Now. You need to be connected to the Internet for this procedure. Select I have installed my software and need to authorize it. Select Authorize with ESRI now using the Internet.
Provide your personal details. Select options that applies to you. Enter the license number you got from https://gissoftware.gis.lu.se/. Enter the license number in all boxes on this page to get access to the extensions.
The remaining extensions can be evaluated. You do not need them for our courses. If the authorization was successful you are greeted with a similar dialog. In ArcGIS Administrator, verify under Availability that your license is valid. Look under the Expires column. Your license should expire a year from date of activation.
Note that you can switch between Concurrent and Single should the need arise. You just select Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent use or Advanced (ArcInfo) Single use in ArcGIS Administrator. Remember though that Concurrent use requires VPN or physical access to Lund University network.
10. Deauthorize Single use license Your Single use license can only be installed on one computer. You can move it between machines a few times but it can only be used on one machine at a time. To move a license, open ArcGIS Administrator. Press the button Deauthorize and follow the instructions on screen. When the process is done your Single use license is not bound to any computer and can be moved. To register, press the button Authorize now and proceed according to instruction in section 9. Note that if you uninstall ArcGIS, change hardware or format your computer without deauthorizing it first, your ArcGIS license is lost forever. The same thing applies if your system crashes so badly that it cannot be booted. Once you register a license it is bound to that particular computer until it expires or it is deauthorized. Since you can only get one license per year you might end up with a non functional installation of ArcGIS if you fail to deauthorize.
