1 Setting Up the Device and Domain Administration Install a Host Support Program on your Computer A NetVault7.1 program must be installed on the computer(s) used by the administrator(s) of your backup service. This program and NetVault7.1 documentation may be available on CD ROM or via download from via the BakBone WEB site. If not, your NAS distributor can help you obtain these items. The setup wizard guides you through the installation, which is intuitive for most applications aside from the following notes: You must be logged on as administrator. Your host computer must have an assigned host name. For Windows installations, during the setup steps, you will come to a dialog called Setup Type. From the Setup Type dialog, select NetVault Server System. Consult NetVault documentation if the installation procedure is not sufficiently intuitive for your application. To open the NetVault Installation Guide, click Product Documentation on the initial screen that displays when you run the NetVault7.1 from a Bakbone WEB site download or CD ROM. The instructions in the NetVault installation manual are tailored to your operating system, so observe the instructions specific to your client OS. After you have finished installing this program, you will need to associate the host program with the icenas Launch Backup Program button. See Appendix for procedures. Backup Service Configuration Setup Procedure 1. Select Tape Backup to open the Tape Backup 2. Select Configure to open the NAS Backup Service Configuration 3. Enter, confirm, and note the password you want the backup administrator to use when using the tape drive. The default is nas.

2 Fields on the Backup Service Configuration dialog Backup Software: The product name for the software that provides the backup/restore service Server Version: Version of the NetVault7 backup/restore software. You may need this information when you order a license key from BakBone software, Inc. Machine ID: The name assigned to the NAS unit you are currently administering. This is the ID to use when you order a license key from BakBone software, Inc. New Password: Field for setting the password used for NetVault7 access. The default password is set to nas. You will need to remember this password when setting up domain administration. Confirm Password: Field for confirming correct entry of the password License Key: Field for entering the license key. A license key is required for BakBone NetVault7 backup service after the initial trial period expires. Upgrade Backup Service: Allows you to navigate to and install a new version of BakBone software. Contact Technical Support to obtain new versions of BakBone software. 4. During the initial trial period, the BakBone software may work without a license key. If it does not work, see (the BakBone software WEB site) for instructions on what to enter in the Enter License Key field. Eventually, you will need to purchase a license key. You will need to provide Bakbone with the machine ID shown on the Configuration dialog (pictured above as NAS Backup Service Configuration dialog) not the machine ID for the host. With this purchase you can also obtain hard-copy versions of the BakBone manuals. PDF versions of the BakBone manuals can be downloaded from the company WEB site. When you have the license key, enter it in the License Key field and select Update License Key. If the key you enter is expired or invalid, you may see a message stating: "This server may not be remotely administered," or you might see the message: Unable to update license key. Contact BakBone software, Inc. for help on what to do if either of these messages appear contact your vendor. 5. Select the Enable Backup Service button. If you do not have a license or the software is corrupted, either the following message will appear or the service will not be enabled without displaying a message: "Failed to Enable Backup Service." Contact Technical Support for help if this message appears. Setting Up the Device and Domain Administration Use the following procedure to set the NAS (server) for tape drive administration and set the administrator password. This operation requires administrative privileges.

3 Procedure on Windows: 1. On the Tape Backup dialog of the NAS device, use the Launch Backup program button to open the NetVault 1 You may be prompted to open or save the file. Choose open and be sure to uncheck the box that says "Always prompt for this type of file." 2. Select Administration, then Domain Management to open the NetVault Domain Management 3. Either find the NAS listed as an Available NetVault Server or, if it does not appear on the list, enter its address or server name for Machine Name or IP Address and select Find. This should add the NAS to the list. 4. Right click on the NAS listing and select Add as Server. This often opens a password prompt box. 5. Click on Save Password, then enter the same password you used during the Server Setup Procedure (see page 1). Select OK If you receive the message "This server may not be remotely administered," your NetVault key has probably expired or is invalid. 4 6. The NAS should now be listed as a controlled server. To avoid inappropriate license expiration problems, if your client computer is listed as a controlled server, right click on the listing for your NAS under Controlled Servers and select it as the default. Configuring NetVault to Recognize the Backup Device 1. From the NetVault primary dialog s Administration pull-down menu, select Device Management to open the NetVault Device Management 2. From the Add menu, select either Add Standalone Drive to open the Add standalone Drive dialog or, for autoloaders or libraries, select Library to open the Library Autoloader or Library: Use the Type pull-down menu to select the library type. Then switch to Drive Selection to identify the drive type. For each device type identified above, double click the icon to open the directory. Locate the device and double click on it. Make sure that a large picture of the device appears in the box to the right. 3. Enter a name for the device. Use the Save Detail button on the upper left side of the screen to save the configuration, and close the 4. Close all open windows, and see below for instructions on operating the program.

5 Appendix Setting the Launch Backup Program The following procedures link the Launch Backup Program button on the icenas interface to the Bakbone executable program installed on a Windows computer. This allows you to open the tape backup program with a single click of a button. These procedures may require administrator login. Setting the Launch Backup Program Button Using Windows Explorer 1. Select My Computer to open a 2. Depending on your version of Windows Explorer, select either Tools > Folder Options... > File Types > New type or View > Options... > File Types > New. This will open the Add New File Type 3. For Associated Extension or File Extension, enter L5B and click OK. You will now see a list of file types. 4. Select the L5B from the list and click Edit or Advanced to open the Edit File Type 5. If there is a Confirm Open After Download button, uncheck it. Action should say Open. If action is not specified, click on New to open the New Action 6. For Action enter Open; then use browse to enter the path to the BakBone client C:\Program Files \BakBone Software\NetVault\bin\nvgui.exe and click Open. 1. Select OK twice, then close all the open dialogs. Setting the Launch Backup Program Button on a Windows Host Using Netscape 2. Select Edit > Preferences > Navigator >Applications > New Type to open the New Type 3. Enter any appropriate description for the tape backup program. 4. Set the MIMEtype to: application/x-l5backup 5. Set the Suffix to: L5B 6. Select Application, then type the path to the backbone client. C://Program Files/NetVault7/bin/nvgui.exe 7. Select OK twice to close two screens. Setting the Launch Backup Program Button from Netscape for Linux/UNIX 1. Select Edit > Preferences > Navigator >Helper Applications > New Type 2. Enter any appropriate description for the tape backup program. 3. Set the MIMEtype to: application/x-l5backup 4. Set the Suffix to: L5B 5. For Application to Use select the Choose Key. 6. If you have accepted the default installation path (/usr), browse to /usr/netvault7/bin/nvgui, and select Open. 7. After a reboot, you should be able to select the BakBone program.
