Innovative network monitoring technologies for hydraulically not separated large zones MWM Martinek Water Management AUSTRIA
What means Sisyphus to Water-Loss-Reduction? According to Greek Mythology Zeus punished his trickery King Sisyphus to roll a huge boulder up a steep hill. Before he could reach the top, however, the massive stone would always roll back down, forcing him to begin again. Zeus accordingly displayed his own cleverness by consigning Sisyphus to an eternity of useless efforts and unending frustration. Thus it came to pass that pointless and/or interminable activities are sometimes described as Sisyphean
The only analogy a never ending task - but not useless and with a clear target to successfully safe our most important food potable water
The big change from calculations to measurements From the very near history until today it was and is still obvious to calculate anticipating water losses in leaks/km or leaks/per house connection A number of data of statistical values where necessary to get resp.to estimate probable loss rates For old networks a true and valuable hydraulic calculation will not allow to receive reliable results Too many changes, repairs, additives, incrustations, leaking, mistuned valves etc. leads calculations to absurdity!
Permanent Monitoring the key to a sutainable water loss reduction Today's sophisticated measuring technology performs reliable, accurate and comparable data and is showing the actual and true hydraulic condition! Continuous comparison with previous data night flow measures or sequential information's during day consumption and automatic analysing of the data result in fast activity to pin-point and close leakages. The most advanced Multiparameter Monitoring - with high sensitive Sensory measure FLOW-PRESSURE- NOISE at once can prevent from greate bursts due to early recognition of any small deviation with one of the parameters!
Symbolic display Movement of graph from a growing leak to the repaired condition and the release of alarm by the typical Boundary drop down of boundary 3 days after repair smooth growing of leak cross-boundary release ALARM
MULTIPARAMETER -MONITORING The KEY to an active, fast, reliable and sustainable Water Loss Reduction due to high sensitive Sensor- and advanced analysing technology! Creating virtual DMA s - means no physical boundaries - advantage of open network 24 hour Online leakage warning, resp. access warning within a few seconds!! Remote control and remote update A new approach to more efficient feasibility studies (prior checks before starting any kind of activity!) by using 3 major physical parameters FLOW-PRESSURE-NOISE optional temperature - at once. Diagnostic tool to distribution systems Automatic boundary setting (Reference level and alarm settings) Automatic evaluation of night flows and pressures Analog/GPRS/GSM/Ethernet transmission Early leakage warning due to statistical analysis
MULTIPARAMETERING physical arrangement LOGGER C Pa Cm/sec. db or alternatively
A STATE OF ART - SOLUTION Flow Pressure Noise in a single Sensor housing A simple and reliable installation - approved since more than 5 Years
Multi-Parametering Principle of Measurement pressure flow noise decrease of pressure when leak occurs noise level at break through repair flow = 0 noise level when hollow space filled with water noise level before break trough noise level after repair change of flow direction pressure flow noise time

Fazit: Auch wenn wir hier keinen Rohrschaden finden konnten zeigt sich, daß die Meßtechnik uns selbst kleine Veränderungen im Betrieb aufzeigt, was grundsätzlich positiv zu werten ist. mfg - Ch.Oberreuter Stadtwerke Chemnitz AG a summary: Due to a routine-check of a valve which was responsible to pressure reduction was changed in it s working position. A 3-parameter Sensor of MWM reacted to all 3 parameters with definition to a leak. The Conclusion: (translated) Even we had not a burst but it shows impressively that this measuring technology is capable to detect also very small deviations in the system, which we only can comment as very positiv!

Advantages and disadvantages virtual- DMA to real DMA Advantages» No separation of network Advantages of open network Maximum of hydraulic capacity Higher safety of supply in case of fire fighting» No stagnation in displaced strings No flushing effort Disadvantages» No pressure management for small sections possible» No water balances for virtual zones possible» No need to control tightness of zone borders» No shaft required Cost efficient installation
Conclusion Leakage is a common reason for inefficiencies Technical solutions for leakage control are Available Cost efficient Water losses require attention of highest management Risk management, strategic planning, budgets, training 2 Warning Messages: Innovative network monitoring systems could have positive side effects! E.g. Understanding what is going on in the system Investments in water loss control leads to sustainability in supply service and cost reduction!
