Although the ese Whisky industry is relatively recent, they have excelled at the quality end of the spectrum. It started in 1924 in the suburb s of Kyoto with the establishment of s first whisky distillery, the now famous Yamazaki. Yamazaki was founded by Shinjiro Torii who owned a company that was later to become Suntory. The other key figure in need of mention is that of Masataka Taketsuru, who Torri had hired to work on his new Yamazaki project. Taketsuru had done something no one in had done, he had travelled to Scotland to learn the craft of distillation first hand. He was of course the ideal partner for Torii and his grand plans. He would later leave his post with Yamazaki to start a company that would become known as Nikka, also included in this new venture was the establishing of the now famous Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido. It was the smallest of s whisky distilleries, but a leader in the realm of quality. It was eventually purchased by the Mercian Group, which operated the Kirin business and was also a large importer and wholesaler of low end wines, spirits and other beverages. Sadly, the tiny high end whisky project at the Karuizawa Distillery did not fit in with the company profile and the operations at Karuizawa were halted in 2001. More recently connoisseurs have become aware of just how fabulous these whiskies really are and demand has soared. It won t be too long before there are none at all, so what we have here in this auction is something very special indeed.
