Things to do: top 3 according to our guests -1- A breathtaking boat trip across Lake Tisza. With a small wooden motor boat (5HP), which you can rent here in Tiszaderzs, the nicest spots can be reached. Enjoy the silence of the smooth water, where you can only hear the cuckoo, and where herons, storks and the buzzing dragonflies fly around. We will give our guests a detailed map of the area so they won t get lost between the small islands and creeks. To make this boat trip a real success, we suggest to have a romantic pick nick somewhere along the lake! -2- A trip in a covered wagon across the Great Plain in the Hortobágy National Park! During this trip (with departure from Máta) it will become clear why this oldest national park of Hungary is declared to be Unesco World Heritage. You will find some peculiar animals; and the horsemen in their typical traditional costumes (the csikós) will show you their spectacular horsemanship. In Hortobágy you can pay a visit to the beautiful shepherd museum and to the interesting bird hospital. You can also have a closer look at the Nine-holed Bridge, stroll along the artisanal market and have lunch in the authentic tavern. Or you can take a packed lunch and make a walk near the fishponds (nice spots guaranteed) of the Great Plain puszta. You can make this trip one way on foot and return by the narrow gauge railway. Returning to the Tisza Lodge we suggest to make stop at Nagyiván for some real puszta romance and for the many storks (between April and September). -3- Depending on personal interest: Eger or Berekfürdő! A visit to the cozy town of Eger at the foot of the Bükk Mountains! Stroll around the baroque center, climb the nine floors of the athenaeum where you will find the Camera Obscura darkroom, and the old library. From the roof terrace you ll have a gorgeous view over the city, surrounded by hills and vineyards. Pay a
visit to the castle and the cathedral, the minaret, take a walk through the park,... Afterwards drive to Szépasszony Völgy, Valley of beautiful women, just outside town. More than fifty wine cellars have been carved into the rocks, here hundreds of wines are waiting to be tasted. The most famous wine you really should taste is the Egri Bikavér, also known as the bull s blood of Eger. Relaxing in the lovely thermal spa of Berekfürdő! If you want to get acquainted with the bathing culture of the Hungarians, this is one thing you should really do. Berekfürdő is located in a nice surrounding, it has six water basins and a covered thermal bath with two basins which are open to the public throughout the whole year. More things to do ranked according to distance (up to max 1 hour by car) -1- Have a relaxing day in our sunny garden Pick a spot, use the paddling pool, make yourself comfortable in the chairs, feel free to take a book or magazine and just enjoy!
-2- make a bicycle tour Rent a bike and explore the beautiful surroundings of the Tisza lake, we can give you some information and you will get a cycling map. -3- Have a walk Walk through Tiszaderzs guided by our photo trail or walk the 3.4 kilometers to Lake Tisza. -4- Have a trip on the lake in a motor boat Rent a small motor boat at the Tiszaderzs harbour, we can make you a reservation, give you a detailed itinerary and mark the nicest tour.
-5- Catch the fish of your life along the shore or on the lake itself More than 50 species of fish can be found in Lake Tisza. We can inform you about the possibilities and arrange a fishing license. -6- Relax at Atilla Bay You will find this bay in Abádszalók (at 6 km), here you can sunbathe, swim, cycle on a pedal boat, try all kinds of water sports,... When you don t like to swim in open water you can find, at about 100m distance, a swimming pool complex, where you can also book a relaxing massage. -7- Visit the doll museum in Abádszalók During this visit you will wear funny slippers around your shoes, the owners are very proud of their collection: 375 dolls dressed in 215 examples of traditional Hungarian costumes and 266 examples of costumes from 64 other countries.
-8- Stroll along the market in Tiszafüred There is a market every Thursday and Saturday morning in the city center (ends around 12.00), make sure you also go inside the market hall where the local stall holders proudly offer you their fruit, vegetables, honey, etc. -9- Pay a visit to the ceramist in Tiszafüred She gives her visitors a warm welcome, she loves to show the secrets of her skill and, if you dare, you can have a try yourself. There is also a lovely showroom where you can buy these little works of art. -10- Explore part of the lake by kayak or canoe The best place to start this trip is Tisza-Örveny or Tiszafüred, we can give you an itinerary.
-11- Make a boat trip with a German or English speaking guide If you like to know more about the fauna and flora and the bird reserve of the Tisza lake, you can plan a boat trip or a Tisza Virág walk on the island across the harbour. This is especially fun with children (don t forget mosquito repellent). -12- Do you like horse riding? Close to the lake at Gulyás lovástanya intisza-örveny and a bit further away at the beginning of the puszta at Posztós Gabriella in Egyek, you can make beautiful trips. We can make the necessary reservations. -13- Spoil yourself with a luxurious relaxation therapy or massage In the 4 star hotel Balneum in Tiszafüred you can enjoy pure pampering in western style. You choose a therapy and we can arrange the bookings.
-14- Ease the body and soothe the mind in one of the thermal spas These baths hold water rich in salts and minerals which flow from the springs at a temperature of more than 30 C. It is incredibly healthy and relaxing. Several of these spas can be found in the area: Berekfürdő, Kunhegyes, Tiszaörs, Tiszafüred. We can give you the itinerary. -15- Have a closer look at the bird reserve of Lake Tisza in Poroszló You will reach the board walk by a small ferry. Along a 1500 meter long board walk you can explore an area of 100 ha; 2 smaller and 1 large 8 meters high viewingplatforms enable you to search an area of 1000 ha. We can give you an itinerary and lend you binoculars. -16- Interested in the Cumanian burial mounds? In the Karcag area you can find 24 of these burial mounds and in the Nagykun museum you will find a lot of information on this topic. Make sure you also see the mysterious Zádor-Bridge and try to find the windmill. Ask us for a brochure.
-17- Make a trip in a covered wagon across the Great Plain in the Hortobágy National Park These excursions leave at 10.00h 12.00h 14.00h 16.00h from Máta. We can give you the necessary information and book a seat in the covered wagon for you. -18- Pay a visit to our county capital city of Szolnok and go shopping In this town we go shopping in big supermarkets such as CORA, TESCO, etc. After the renovation of the city center, this town has become very cosy. On Lake Tisza, during the summer, you can see a lot of rowers, kayaks and boats. For a visit to this city we advise you to go on a weekday, because on Saturday and Sunday the town is deserted and less enjoyable unless there are some special events. -19- Pay a one-day-visit to Eger This is our favourite city and it also ranks among the top three of our guests. For a visit to the casemates below the fortress we advise you to take a sweater along (you will not be allowed inside without). You can have lunch in the city center at an extraordinary pancake restaurant Palacsintavár. We can also give you tips for a good parking place.
-20- In Egerszálok you can find an extraordinary thermal bath This complex provides all modern comfort and is worth a visit. The spectacle of the steaming naturally formed white terraces of calcium crystals contrasting with the surrounding green hills is marvellous. When you leave in time you can combine this thermal bath with a visit to Eger. -21- You love making a car trip along authentic villages? We have mapped out a route for a nice car trip (135km) during which you will also make use of the ferry across the Tisza river at Tiszacsege. You can combine this trip with a visit to the Archeological Park in Polgár. You will get a detailed map. Great things to do: a little bit further away Ranked according to distance by car -1- Hajdúszoboszló: an adventure for every family member (1h20 75 km) This is the largest spa/thermal bath complex of the country with an adventure park next to it. In the spa complex with beach and palm trees you imagine yourselves in a Mediterranean country. There are 13 baths on an area of 30 ha! The entrance of the aqua park (adventure park) can be found inside the spa complex. If you want to visit this adventure park you ll have to pay extra and you can choose a ticket for 2 hours or for a whole day...
-2- Make a trip to the 2 nd largest city of Hungary-Debrecen (1h30 90 km) This city will meet all your expectations if you like beautiful buildings. This student city is also known as the Calvinistic Rome. There are a lot of tourist attractions and in the Nágyerdei park or Big Forest you can make a walk and have lunch at Krúdy étterem (restaurant). You can finish the day visiting the health resort (or adventure park) Aquaticum. We can give you more information. -3- Visit the 250-year-old royal palace of Sissy in Gödöllo (1h45 140 km) It is one of the largest palaces in Hungary and a typical example of Hungarian baroque. -4- A day in the National Park Bükk in Szilvásvárad (1h50 100km)
This village is located in the picturesque valley between the Bükk and Mátra mountains and is recommended to every nature lover. Make a lovely walk, climb to the prehistoric cavern or taste a fresh trout. The cavern can also be reached by the narrow gauge railway, so a one way trip on foot is possible too. -5- Discover Lillafüred, the eastern side of the Bükk mountains and the 3 rd city of the country, Miskolc (1h55 115km) In Miskolc you can take the narrow gauge railway to the romantic Lillafüred, which can also be reached by car (in high season it s sometimes difficult to find a parking place). The most famous tourist attractions are the caves (Petöfi-barlang and Szeletabarlang), the waterfall, the Ottó Herman house and Hotel Palota. Near Miskolc you can find the impressive castle of Diósgyór with its four towers. The old town s pedestrian zone is also worth a visit. If you leave in time, you can finish this day at the unique cave bath of Miskolc-tapolca. -6- Trip to Hollokő (2h00 150 km) This is one of the most beautiful Hungarian settlements and has been declared world heritage. Though most of the buildings are part of the village museum, it is not an open air museum. The women in the street are dressed in colourful costumes, still they are not performing, they live and work there.
-7- Make sure you pay a visit to our capital city Budapest (2h00 160 km) It would be a shame to leave Hungary without visiting the Queen of the Danube because this city is without any doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. There are a lot of tourist attractions, so we suggest our guests to take a city tour by bus. Afterwards you can discover it yourself on foot. Szent Jupát étterem is an authentic restaurant with Hungarian prices which can be reached easily by the metro (get off at Moszkva tér station). -8- Taste the famous Aszú wines in Tokaj (2h10 145km) Ever since the 12 th century Tokaj has been famous for its Aszú wines and today they are still known world wide for their extraordinary good taste. A few years ago the historical wine area was listed as world heritage. -9- Discover the fascinating stalactite caverns of Aggtelek (2h30 153km) The 220 million years old limestone mass of the Gömör-Torna-Karst stretches out across the Hungarian -Slovak border. It contains one of the largest stalactite cavern systems of Europe and has been listed world heritage. This trip can be combined with a visit to the cave baths of Miskolc-Tapolca.
