International Atomic Energy Agency Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development - Nuclear Energy Agency Studsvik Nuclear AB Symposium on Recycling of Metals arising from Operation and Decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities Studsvik, Nyköping, Sweden April 8 10, 2014 INTRODUCTION Studsvik Nuclear AB in co-operation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Energy Agency in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD/NEA) invites to a symposium on Recycling of Metals arising from operation and decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities, April 8-10 2014. The symposium will take place at the Studsvik site outside Nyköping, Sweden. OBJECTIVES The objective of the symposium is to share current practice, experiences and innovations within the management of contaminated metallic radioactive material. The symposium will be a forum for Learning about current practices, Highlight strategic issues related to metals recycling, Exchange of experiences, Discussion of innovative and new techniques and needs for improvements, Developing and maintenance of networks in the area of metals recycling. TARGET AUDIENCE Our aim is to bring together operators, regulators, decision makers, scientists, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders. WORKING LANGUAGE The working language of the symposium will be English. 1
PROGRAMME The symposium will last for three days. A short introduction by representatives from Studsvik, IAEA and OECD/NEA will start the symposium followed by presentations by invited speakers from international organisations. Seven topical sessions will cover issues relating to Regulations and recommendations International recommendations and national legislation Application of regulations Regulator views Minimising waste amounts Experience in minimising the generation of waste in the form of radioactive or potentially radioactive metals Activities to minimise the waste volumes for disposal Characterisation and categorisation of metals to be recycled Decontamination of metals for clearance Melting of metals for clearance, reuse or volume reduction Best practice in management of metals for clearance and recycling Sustainability and public acceptance Some sessions will be parallel. Each session will contain three to five presentations and group discussions. Each session will be concluded with a short analysis of the presentations and the outcome of the group discussions. Conclusions of each session and outcome of the group discussions will be presented on a Summing up the third day. The symposium will also hold a poster session with topics as above. After the formal closing of the symposium, half a day is dedicated for guided tours at the Studsvik and SVAFO 1 facilities. It will be possible to visit waste management facilities, the reactor decommissioning project and materials technology laboratories. 1 SVAFO is the other license holder on the Studsvik site responsible for legacy waste. 2

The abstracts, as well as the papers and the presentations, should be written in English. Supplement your abstract with author s name(s), company or organisation, contact details and name of the presenter(s). Abstracts are to be submitted to Anders Appelgren, Studsvik, by e-mail to anders.appelgren@studsvik.se. Deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday, October 18, 2013. Authors of accepted papers and posters will be notified no later than Friday, November 29, 2013. Please note that registration is needed also for authors/presenters of accepted papers and posters. For accepted papers, the deadline for submission of full paper and associated Power Point presentation is Thursday, March 7, 2014. The same deadline applies for copies of accepted poster presentations. DOCUMENTATION The outcome of the symposium will be captured in proceedings (distributed on CD/DVD). 3
PARTICIPATION AND FEES All persons wishing to participate in the symposium are requested to register on-line at www.studsvik.se or off-line via e-mail (anders.appelgren@studsvik.se) or regular mail (address given below). The registration form is found below and at www.studsvik.se. Please note that registration is needed also for authors of accepted papers and posters. The last day for registration is Friday, February 28, 2014. Seating is limited! The fee for participating in the symposium is SEK 6 900 (VAT not included). For participants who contribute with an accepted paper or poster (main author) the fee is SEK 5 900. The fee covers the entire symposium including lunch, dinner reception and refreshments, scheduled daily bus transfer to/from Nyköping and symposium documentation. Accomodation is not included in the symposium fee. The fee for participating just one or two days is SEK 3 000 per day. Accompanying person participating in dinner reception will pay SEK 600. Studsvik will invoice the participants in March 2014 (before the symposium) after receiving the registration for the symposium. ACCOMODATION The symposium participants book their own hotel and provide their own hotel costs. There are three prebooked hotel options with a first-to-come booking policy.
