Spcial Vowl Sound ou maks a multitud of sounds. It is our most variabl splling. It will only confus studnts to show thm all th variations at onc. 0u, pronouncd /ow/ as in now, is th most-frqunt usag and is, thrfor, taught first. Svral words using th variations of ou ar taught as Most Common Words. A listing of th multipl sounds of ou and xampls of th words associatd with thos sounds is listd blow. Ou can hav th sound of doubl o, /oo/, as in look. It is hard in words such as could, should, and would. Ou can hav th sound of short u, as in tough, rough, touch, and nough. Ou can hav th sound of long o, as in court, fourth, pour, soul, and shouldr. Ou can hav th sound of doubl o, /oo/, as in zoo. This is th normal pronunciation of ou in Frnch, and many of ths words ar borrowd from that languag, such as troup, you, youth, soup, group, through, souvnir, routin, coupon, and cougar.
