Fribourg a Student s town that feels right The medieval University town of Fribourg, a bridge between French and German cultures, offers the ideal combination of high-level education and a dynamic student life. The city benefits from a particularly attractive geographical location. Indeed, its proximity to the Alps and many lakes provides an excellent range of outdoor activities throughout the year. As Switzerland s only bilingual University, Fribourg attracts students from all over the world, giving the city not only a young character, but also a unique international atmosphere. In addition to French, Swiss German and German, you can hear Italian, English and Spanish spoken in its lively streets. The town has adapted well to the student s needs. Moreover, its family atmosphere and traditional hospitality encourages stimulating encounters with students and scientists. In addition, the University offers a wide range of sports and social activities. Fribourg is praised for its old town, and is considered one of the finest examples of medieval architecture. Its numerous cultural and artistic activities such as festivals, concerts and museums, make it a dynamic centre of life.
The University of Fribourg a top class learning institution and meeting point of cultures Situated on the border between the German and the Latin parts of Switzerland, the University of Fribourg is a natural bridge between the cultural and linguistic worlds of Northern and Southern Europe. Founded in 1889, the University has continually grown, opening up to the modern world while staying true to its traditions. The University consists of five Faculties: Theology, Law, Humanities, Sciences, and Economics and Social Sciences. Being Switzerland s only bilingual university, its official languages are both the German and the French, used as much in teaching as in administration. Courses offered within the various curricula are available in either, or both, languages, thus attracting students worldwide. The University so acquires its unique international character while maintaining a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Fribourg was one of the first Swiss Universities to implement the Declaration of Bologna (equality of European University diplomas) thus enabling its students to study at any of its numerous partner universities. Besides the multiple international exchange programmes, the University has also developed cooperation on a regional and national level. The mobility BeNeFri programme gives the opportunity for students of the Universities of Bern, Neuchâtel and Fribourg to profit from the extended courses and complementary assets of the BeNeFri partners. The University s international orientation and its proud humanistic tradition mirror its native country Switzerland: multi-cultural and modern.
