1 HEG-FR International Programs DIPLOMA OF FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT 2016 FEBRUARY 15TH - JUNE 24TH AN IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF FINANCIAL ISSUES IS AN IMPORTANT PREREQUISITE FOR A SUCCESSFUL PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND ADMISSION TO BUSINESS COURSES AT UNIVERSITIES. This semester is designed for undergraduates and introduces the basic concepts and models of modern financial theories via lectures, texts and case studies. Students learn how assets and companies are valuated. Projections of future cash flows, capital budgeting, the trade-off between risk and return, risk management, and the valuation of securities are further courses offered in this program. The content of the classes is directly related to the needs of banks, insurance and finance companies. Practical work close to life in corporations is an important part of the program. Jorge Carrera Ortega Mexico Financial Management 2014 PROGRAM PROSPECTS Students of the Diploma of Financial Management will be able to understand and apply financial management principles to investment strategies and securities valuation, estimate the cost of capital and risk assessment, construct an investment portfolio, illustrate how derivative instruments can be used to manage risk, and explain the role of financial institutions. Students will strengthen the reflection on the intercultural challenges related to Swiss finance system and learn more about finance ecosystems from Switzerland. ADMISSION This program focuses on undergraduates students with excellent academic achievement English Skills at B1 European level or higher are essential Previous knowledge of finance is necessary to follow this program CREDIT POINTS The program includes 6 modules and an applied finance project. It lasts one semester and in Fribourg Switzerland and 30 ECTS will be accredited at your university.
2 2 PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT (5 ECTS) This course provides an introduction to portfolio management by measuring returns and volatility. It furthermore introduces concepts for measuring risk and risk adjusted returns as well as concepts of risk diversification and portfolio risk calculation. Besides it gives an introduction to capital asset pricing models, efficiency frontiers and the capital market line. Assessments of unsystematic vs. systematic risk and beta calculation are discussed and the asset allocation decision is investigated. Furthermore the usage of risk management methods, futures and forwards stocks, commodities, FX, interest rate are analyzed. LEADERSHIP IS A PIVOTAL CAPABILITY NEEDED BY THE EMERGING GENERATION OF EXECUTIVES AND IS WIDELY SEEN AS THE HIGHEST LEVER- AGE INVESTMENT COMPANIES CAN MAKE IN THEIR OWN FUTURE. IT IS CRUCIAL FOR ORGANIZATIONS TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS THAT ARE EFFEC- TIVE, SUSTAINABLE AND HAVE REAL BUSINESS IMPACT. Thomas Zweifel Professor Leadership To understand the concepts of modern portfolio theory and apply various methods (calculating returns, risk, beta, etc.) To understand the concepts of risk management and apply the tools to practical issues in managing interest and currency risks To be able to select the appropriate methods, make the calculations and present the findings and solutions in an adequate way At the end of the semester students will be able to solve financial problems with the means of calculators and computers BANKING AND INSURANCE (5 ECTS) This module is divided into two parts and first addresses special challenges in banking for example payment system in Switzerland and Europe transactional vs. financial accounts, overview of the banking system and functions of the bank principal regulations, Basel II and Basel III credit management (PD and LGD). Overview of insurance market and products will form the second main block. In addition principal regulations and solvency standards life- and non-life insurance, Health Insurance in Switzerland and 3-pillar system. 3 HEG-FR International Programs APPLIED FINANCE PROJECT (5 ECTS) The main objective of this team work is to create a report on a specific topic in applied finance 1/3 of the work will develop the theory and the methodology 2/3 of the work will be an application of real information/data. The report will be read by at least 2 professors of the school and students will make a presentation. Length: no less than 80 pages (without appendices). To understand how to do applied research in finance To develop project management skills To enhance team skills FINANCIAL VALUATION (5 ECTS) This module teaches fixed income, characteristics and valuation, yield calculation, concept of duration and convexity, equity valuation. In addition the main valuation methods are, discounted cash flow valuation, relative valuation, derivatives and structured products, overview of derivative instruments Intrinsic- and time value, option strategies and structured products alternative investments, commodity investments, private equity funds and Major hedge fund strategies. To be able to price assets using the commonly used valuation methods To understand the major concepts of fixed income investments and how to analyze their characteristics To be able to estimate the equity value of a company and make investment recommendations To understand the benefits and risks of derivatives and structured products To be familiar with alternative investments including illiquid and non-financial assets RISK MANAGEMENT (2.5 ECTS) During this module students will learn how corporate risks are managed and to experience the importance of risk management to an organization. This module imparts threats and risks, risk definitions, different kind of risks, definition of risk management, risk areas, risk treatment (to avoid, reduce, retain, transfer), risk management process, risk reporting and monitoring and risk assessment, risk management. To identify and classify the threats an organization is facing to transform the threats into measurable risks To analyze the impact of the risks may have on the balance sheet and the Income statement of an organization To evaluate the options for risk treatment. Further, the participants will work in teams to apply the acquired knowledge to practical cases

Intercultural management will form the first part, it is concerned with the challenges and dilemmas that arise when people from different cultures work together, and how culture influences and affects the manner in which people cope with and resolve different problems. The international student collaboration project will complete the second block. Each team will be composed of 4 or 5 students from four different countries. It is up to the team members to initiate contact and find the collaboration mode that works best for their team. This module teaches, a brief introduction to ethics, the principles and values of business ethics and making decisions in business ethics; this course also covers how to build respect organizational ethics: understanding the content of codes of conduct and codes of ethics. Understanding whistle-blower procedures. How to fight against workplace mobbing, corruption and discrimination. To recognize the advantages of ethical behavior in business To understand the principles of honest and fair communication and of the right to privacy To understand how to integrate extra-financial criteria (social and environmental values) into investment strategies To comprehend the principles of good corporate governance and best practice
