3 Freiburg University of Education - A centre of educational excellence The excellent reputation of Freiburg University of Education courses is based on a solid foundation in academic subjects combined with thorough practical training. At present the University offers this stimulating combination of theory and practice to over 4700 students and is the largest of the six universities of education in Baden-Württemberg. With its long tradition of innovative teacher training, the university is ideally placed to meet the demands and challenges of the educational system in the twenty-first century. Freiburg University of Education offers not only excellent teacher training courses but also diplomas in Educational Science and in Social Work in Education. In addition, students may take an MA in a wide range of subjects, or a doctorate or post-doctoral qualification in Education. An increasingly important aspect in the future development of Freiburg University of Education is its strong commitment to teaching, learning and research in a European and international context.

4 Guide to Courses Teacher Training Primary and Lower Secondary (Grund- und Hauptschule) Intermediate Secondary (Realschule) Special Needs All courses leading to a first degree in Education comprise education studies, academic subjects and interdisciplinary teaching and learning, combined with blocks of teaching practice in the classroom. On completion of their degree course at the University of Education students must sit a state examination, after which successful candidates are accepted for a two-year course of professional training, where they teach under supervision. Distance/Contact MA course in Early Foreign Language Learning This flexible course leads to an MA in Early Foreign Language Learning and qualifies graduates to teach either French or English at primary school level. Diploma in Education Adult Education/Further Education Media in Education (Medienpädagogik) Educational Theory for School (Schulpädagogik) Social Work in Education (Sozialpädagogik)

5 MA in Methodology (Magisterstudiengang in Fachdidaktik) This course aims to train potential future academics for the Universities of Education. On completion of a diploma, the European Teacher course, or a Master s degree students can work towards a doctorate in Education (Dr. paed.). The University of Education also offers a postdoctoral qualification. Bilingual Degree Courses European Teacher/Europalehramt Primary/Lower Secondary School (Europalehramt Grund-/Hauptschule) Intermediate Secondary School (Europalehramt Realschule) In addition to the courses studied for a first teaching degree, students take courses in Europeorientated bilingual studies. This means that on qualification they will be able to teach their bilingual subject in either French or English as well as in German. At the end of this course candidates take the state teaching examination and are awarded an MA in European Bilingual Studies.

6 Integrated Study/Cursus Intégré The integrated study option is targeted at students who have a good knowledge of French and who are studying to become primary school teachers. It is run in cooperation with the University of Mulhouse, the IUFM d Alsace and the postgraduate teacher training departments (Staatliche Seminare). Students accepted for the course study together in a bi-national group, alternating between the participating colleges until the requirements for both the Licence (France) and the First State Teaching Examination (Germany) have been met. The second professional training phase also takes place in both countries until the Concours/CAPE (France) and the Second State Teaching Examination (Germany) have also been successfully completed. The goal of this course of study is to provide the bilingual teaching skills and qualifications necessary to enable successful candidates to teach in both countries. 9 Innovation through Research and Adult Education Both Research and Teaching are central to the academic profile of Freiburg University of Education. It promotes the qualification of future academics through numerous research projects. For example: Language learning and Multi-lingualism Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning Media Educational Research in Schools The Centre for Adult Education and Methodology offers programmes catering for all types of student. The idea of lifelong learning, for example, is implemented through the Third Age University, a programme which has no age restrictions and provides high-quality courses over a wide range of subjects. Resources The university has an extensive central library complemented by departmental resource centres, a Writing Centre, an Educational Workshop, a Centre for Gender Studies and a Computer Centre which are all available for support, information, inspiration and encouragement.

10 International Freiburg University of Education is proud of its European and international profile. It cooperates with numerous colleges worldwide and actively promotes a large number of exchange programmes for both students and academics. The International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) is primarily responsible for the organization and coordination of exchange. Study Abroad for Freiburg Students Freiburg University of Education has cooperation agreements with approximately 60 colleges/universities around the world. In addition, the international office also represents a number of scholarship and exchange organisations such as the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Organisation), the Pädagogische Austauschdienst (Educational Exchange Organisation), and the Fulbright progamme. It also oversees European scholarship programmes such as SOCRATES and awards the scholarships allocated by the Baden-Württemberg foundation. The International Office can comprehensively advise students on spending time abroad (overseas study, continuing study, teaching assistantships, language courses, theses, doctoral and research projects and internships). Foreign Students studying in Freiburg The International Office is the first stop for any newly arrived foreign student. Normally a foreign student chooses one of two options:

11 A full degree or diploma course A Semester/Year Abroad programme The International Office processes applications from international students, and is responsible for the organisation of their stay in Freiburg, ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), the recognition of courses taken by the students, accommodation etc. Courses in German as a Foreign Language and History (for foreign students) are arranged by the international office. It can also advise visiting students on all aspects of student life in Freiburg. Living and Studying in Freiburg The University of Education offers a wide range of creative, cultural and sporting activities such as the university choir, extensive sports facilities, art exhibitions, literary workshops, English, French and German Theatre groups and much, much more. The University Student Council (AStA) and student representatives at all levels are actively involved in the smooth running of the college. The welcoming atmosphere of the beautifully landscaped university campus is enhanced by the modern refectory (Mensa) and cafeteria where students can meet and relax between classes. Last but not least, the beautiful city of Freiburg is an ideal place both for meeting people from all over the world and for relaxation and contemplation. The town itself boasts a rich cultural life at an international standard; the tranquility of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) and the Vosges is within easy reach; and the tri-national border area of France (Strasbourg), Switzerland (Basle) and Germany (Freiburg) has its own inimitable Mediterranean atmosphere. Freiburg, in short, is the perfect place to study.
