Meet the Head Coach Head Coach Ron Sutherland Ron Sutherland begins his second year as Rhode Island College s head women s swimming coach. He also serves as RIC s coordinator of aquatics. The Anchorwomen kicked off their inaugural season of competition during the winter 2011-12 season. I m extremely excited to get our Anchorwomen swim team off the blocks, Sutherland said. This is a great opportunity for many studentathletes to continue their competitive swimming career. I look forward to the opportunity to establish another successful program in the Rhode Island College athletic tradition. Sutherland has over 40 years of coaching experience at various levels. He was an aquatics specialist and the academic advisor for the physical education department s teacher preparation program at the University of Arizona from 1982-2003. While in Arizona, Sutherland coached USA Swimming club teams where he sent numerous competitors to both the U.S. and Mexican Olympic Trials and various other prestigious national tournaments. Sutherland most recently served as an aquatics director and coach for the YMCA in Wareham, Massachusetts from 2003-07. Prior to his stints in Southeastern Massachusetts and Arizona, he started the aquatics program at the Community College of Rhode Island and served as its director from 1977-82. Sutherland oversaw various youth, adult and senior programs. Sutherland began his swimming coaching career at Cranston High School East in 1969, first as an assistant, and then as the head coach, helping lead the Thunderbolts to a Rhode Island State Championship in 1973. He is a 1964 graduate of Cranston East where he played football, basketball and baseball. Sutherland earned a bachelor s degree in health, physical education and recreation from the University of Rhode Island in 1968. He went on to attain a master s degree in physical education from URI in 1983. He resides in Fairhaven, Massachusetts with his wife Dale. They have four children: Cortney, Jennifer, Derek and Whitney as well as six grandchildren. Meet the Team Ramie Cormay 5-0, Sophomore Walpole, Mass./Walpole Freshman Year (2011-12): Set two season-high marks at Eastern Connecticut on Feb. 4 as she placed second in both the 100 intermediate (1:16.78) and the 100 breaststroke (1:24.57), while also finishing fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:16.75)... posted two more season-high finishes at the Bridgewater State tri-match on Jan. 15 as she placed third in the 200 intermediate (2:45.24) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:16.07), while also finishing third in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.45)...placed 20th in the 100 butterfly (1:19.27) and 26th in the 500 freestyle with a season-high time of 6:45.41 at the Little East Championships on Dec. 3...notched a pair of season-highs at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Nov. 12 as she placed 20th in the 50 breaststroke (40.76) and tied for 21st in the 50 butterfly (33.43), while also finishing 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.83).
