Section 1 What is the chemical industry? 4

The chemical industry takes natural raw materials such as oil and natural gas, as well inorganic minerals such as limestone and salt, and converts these into thousands of chemical products. Based on the UNEP, there are about 248,000 chemical products known to date. The chemical industry serves nearly every sector of economy by providing essential inputs in the form of chemical productions or products, intermediate products, specialties and pharmaceuticals. Description 2401 basic chemicals 2402 other chemical products and nitrogen compounds printing ink and mastics botanical products preparations, perfumes and toilet preparations Chemicals Lifecycle The chemicals lifecycle starts with extraction of raw materials (mining, extraction of oil and gas and others) which are used in chemical manufacturing, processing to produce a wide variety of downstream chemical products. These chemical products can, in turn, be used as feedstock for chemicals production further downstream, industrial activities and services, or production of consumer products. At any stage of lifecycle, chemicals are being shipped to various locations within the country of its production or internationally. Raw materials (eg oil, coal, gas, air, water, minerals) Chemicals industry Basic Chemicals Bulk inorganics and organics eg Ammonia, Gases, Acids, Salts, Petrochemicals: Benzene, Ethylene, Propylene, Xylene, Toluene, Butadiene, Methane, Butylene Chemical processing SPECIALITY CHEMICALS Rubber and Plastic goods, Paints, Adhesives, Performance Chemicals CONSUMER CARE PRODUCTS Soap, Detergents, Laundry aids, Bleaches, Haircare, Fragrances, etc LIFE SCIENCE Pharmaceuticals, Agrochemicals, Biotechnology OTHER INDUSTRIES Paper, Textiles, etc Consumers Source: OECD 2001 5
