Remote Desktop Connection Setup at King s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA Remote Desktop connections are granted to King s Staff only. Students do not have desktop (office) machines on campus, thus no desktop connection can be made. If you would like access to access your office machine from home, you must request this feature. IITS would be happy to comply. We only ask that you submit a formal request to our Help Desk by calling x4357 or by emailing help@kings.edu. Please be prepared to provide your computer name and your King s username. Find your computer name by right-clicking on the Computer icon on your desktop. Choose Properties. On the window that appears, look for the Full Computer Name area and supply that full name in your Help Desk email. In order to keep things as secure as possible, access to our RDP is granted on a per-request basis. Please be advised that we will typically grant you access to the VPN within 24 hours of your request. In order to use a Remote Desktop Connection, you MUST have an active internet connection on your home computer. This guide will assist users of Windows 7 and 8 and users on Android Devices. Remote Desktop on an Windows 7 Device Click the Start button. In the search bar, begin typing the phrase Remote Desktop Connection. When the Remote Desktop Connection shortcut appears under Programs, stop typing and click the shortcut. When this window pops up click Show Options. Next, advance to page 3. Remote Desktop on an Windows 8 Device In Windows 8 s Metro UI (tiled Start area) access the Charms Bar by sliding your finger inward from the screen s right edge. Tap the Search icon. Begin typing the phrase Remote desktop connection. When the Remote Desktop Connection icon appear, stop typing and tap the icon in the Apps area. The Remote Desktop Connection window will open. Before entering any information, tap the Advanced tab Tap the Settings button to access advanced settings Make your settings match the settings in this image: Select Use these RD Gateway server settings Server name: gateway.kings.edu Check Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses Be sure Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer is unchecked. Tap OK to save the settings and go back to the General tab. Fill in the computer field where Computer is the name of your office computer. Tap Connect to attempt a connection with your computer. When prompted to login, use your King s username in this format: username@kings.edu Type in your King s network password and tap OK to complete the connection. Remote Desktop on an Android Device Android devices operate on a different system than Windows-related devices. They cannot use the same software to connect to your desktop, but a remote connection is possible with the free app called 2X Client RDP/Remote Desktop. Download the app and follow these instructions to try out a connection. NOTE: Be aware that message and data rates may apply for downloading and accessing mobile application features and content. King s College doesn t make or control 2X Client RDP/Remote Desktop and is not affiliated with the app creators. We notice this as a useful app, but encourage all users to read the 2X Client terms of service before installing. Once installed, launch the app by tapping its icon: Tap the Add button to add a new connection. Tap RDP Connection to begin setting up a Remote Desktop Connection. Remote Desktop Connection Guide - 5
1. Enter an alias for the connection. This is most useful when you plan to connect to multiple machines it helps you know which one you re connecting to. King s PC may be good for you. 2. Server should be your computer name, in this fashion: yourcomputer.kings.edu 3. Username should be your network username in this format: username@kings.edu 4. Your password should be your network password You DO NOT have to supply a password! It may be best to leave the password field blank so you can enter the password each time you connect. This will increase the security of your King s desktop just in case your device falls into the wrong hands. 5. Leave Connection Mode as Gateway Mode. 6. Check the box by Connect to Console.
