SMART BOARD USE FOR NEWBIES Christina Duguay Christina Harrison Terra Kirsch Denise M. Legghio Our group has decided to focus our attention to the use of technology through the smart board and specifically: smart board use for the newbie. Each member will be focusing on different aspects of smart board technology for an educator with little or no experience using this piece of technology. The following information is the story board for our group. We understand that our presentation should be no more than ten- (10) minutes in total and have decided to divide the time up equally, with each member contribution 2.5 minutes of information. Our information contribution shall be in the form of photos, video and streaming voice through audacity; each member may use one form or a combination of all of them. DENISE M. LEGGHIO (2.5 minutes: video/photos/audacity voice) For my portion of this group project, I have chosen to show how I implemented the use of the smart board in a classroom lesson specified for kindergarten students learning to read and write. This lesson involves the use of phonics and is coupling technology with traditional teaching methods of paper books and interactive teacher/student reading.

PHOTO ONE-(1) My first photo depicts the document camera, which is used along with the Smart board in order to project the image I wished to use. Because this device is red, many educators refer to it as the ELMO. After positioning the phonics lesson document on the document camera I proceeded to move up to the smart board and begin my lesson.

PHOTO TWO-(2) My second photo depicts me at the Smart board teaching phonics. I am able to engage all of my young learners through the use of this projected image as I point and use motions along with them. Further explanation of the motions that accompany the lesson are viewable in the following video: This video excerpt exhibits the use of the Smart board, the pointer and my body in a phonics lesson. You will see how useful the Smart board is in engaging all of my young kindergarten learners as they are able to view the lesson together as I point and move my body to the tune of each sound and word. http://youtu.be/ltpmoxu5mxw

PHOTO THREE-(3) and, my final photo depicts how I am coupling traditional teaching tools with the tools of technology. Following the use of the Smart board, I moved about the room and worked in small groups of children reading the story book that accompanied our phonics lesson. As an educator with little Smart Board experience, I found it to be quite user friendly and a great technological tool to use to teach phonics. I am most hopeful to use this tool in my daily lessons upon my return to the classroom as a full time educator. Terra Kirsch - 2.5 minutes I will discuss how to use Notebook software download to learn the Smart Board interface and tools for users who do not have access to a SmartBoard. I will also show how I used several resources to learn how to create and present a lesson from my

laptop in the computer lab. Templlate will have Smartboard watermark as background image. Essential template will be used for it s clean looking palette. Videos and images will be embedded into the presentation. Our Google docs presentation will be converted to Powerpoint with multimedia added and then converted to a Quicktime movie using Snapz Pro screen capture.

Audio (music, sound effects): Audacity audio to record narrative. No music will be used. Narration (the actual text that you would record to accompany this slide): For teachers who do not have access to a Smart Board yet but would like to learn and use the technology, there is a free 30 day trial to the Smart Notebook software application. It can be found at the Smart Technology website. This will download a version of the Smart Notebook software, board tools, and control panel. The teacher now has the ability to use the tools and create lessons. There are several ways to access tutorials and lesson plans to get you started. First, the Smart Exchange has a library of lesson plans that are categorized by content area, standards, or popularity. Thses lesson can be downloaded directly onto the Notebook desktop for immediate use. Also, SmartClassroom has a Youtube channel of professional videos that can show how to use all the various tools in the Notebook application.
