2 Getting to know your Lenovo S10e Match the numbers with the pictures below. The name of the function is highlighted in bold. 1. Use the Power Button to turn your laptop on and off. 2. Use the Wireless Network Switch to turn your WiFi connectivity on and off. This is the # 1 trouble-shooting problem so make sure the Red light is always on. 3. The Microphone can be used to record your voice or video conference with your teacher(s). 4. The Trackpad is used for moving the mouse around the screen. Use the Trackpad by moving your index finger around the surface. The blue line on Trackpad will allow you scroll. 5. The Left Click mouse button is used to select items on your desktop. a. 3 7. The Lenovo S103 has a battery life of 5 hours. Plug in your Power Supply to this port whenever possible. 8. The VGA port is used to connect your S10e to an external monitor or projector. 9. Insert SD Memory Cards into this slot with the metal connectors facing down. 10. The USB port can be used to connect devices such as a mouse, keyboard, or flash drive. 11. This is the Mini PCI Express slot. Students should ignore this slot and should not take off the cover plate. 12. Plug in your headphones to listen to lessons or music. 13. 5 Networking Wired Networking You can connect to a wired network simply by plugging an Ethernet cable into the correct port on the right side of your Lenovo S10e. The wired network connection is the fastest and most reliable. Wireless Networking (WiFi) 1. Make sure wireless is enabled by pressing the wireless switch and checking the status RED light on the front of the S Using the start menu, open the SDUSD Wireless Tool located in Start Programs. From the drop down list select the location of your school and choose Connect to Network. If you are unable to connect to the school wireless network ask a teacher for help. 5

7 Bretford Netbook 32 Cart 1. The netbook cart will arrive to your class with up to 32 netbooks with two per slot. Remember this picture because this is how you want to have your laptops and cart look like at the end of everyday. 2. As a teacher it is important that you set the tone of how the netbooks will be used in class. Each student will use their own numbered laptop that will be taken and returned to the same slot spot every time. We would highly suggest that your class immediately takes on an ownership mentality versus a rent a car mentality. 3. No more than two students should be taking out or putting back their netbooks at the same time. 4. The most important part of taking out the netbook is to first unplug the adapter, then pull it out. Model this before any student touches the cart. 5. Once the netbook is pulled out, the cord should just dangle in the same spot it was unplugged. 7

8 6. In returning the netbook to the slot, simply slide it in and plug in the cord. See the cord clips on the side of each slot. A student should not have to pull out the AC adapter cord from the measured length of the clip to where the plug is located on the netbook. If a student pulls the laptop out before unplugging, he or she also risk pulling off the cord clip from the slot divider. 7. As a cardinal rule, the AC Adapter should never be unplugged and pulled out from the back! This will be the beginning of the end of the cart, if students or you are allowed to do this. In your technology planning for the cart, it is highly recommended that the school would have purchased at least 3-5 extra AC Adapters per class to handle laptops that go dead during the day and a student needs to plug in somewhere in class. 8. The cart comes with a timer which has an A side for the top row of laptops and a B for the bottom row. You DO NOT need to adjust the timer as is preset to charge the top row for 15 minutes then the bottom row for 15 minutes. The timer dial is located outside the back of the cart, so be careful that you do not push it right up to the wall. Happy computing and enjoy your new netbooks and cart! 8
