PRODUCT SHEET CA Workload Automation Restart Option for z/os Schedulers r11 CA Workload Automation Restart Option for z/os Schedulers r11 CA Workload Automation Restart Option for z/os Schedulers (CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers) allows the data center to self-manage by simplifying the process of rerunning jobs. Its powerful run-handling capabilities reduce the need to restart job manually, minimizing restart errors and data corruption. Overview CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers features allows you to automate JCL restarts by; automatically determining the restart step without JCL Changes performing data set, OS catalog maintenance, and GDG resolution reducing NOT CAT2 conditions providing job tracking and job analysis CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers includes simulation mode, reports on history of events, and performs return code processing at job and step level. Business value CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers reduces the need for labor-intensive tasks such as logging job execution information and creating reports, while reducing the need to manually restart tasks. In addition, by reducing the risk of restart errors, this product empowers you to meet or exceed your SLA deadlines and objectives. Today s businesses depend on high levels of system availability. Jobs that support business applications, database transaction servers, and enterprise servers must run on schedule for 24x7 processing. A missed deadline can be costly. Moreover, if a critical system is late or unavailable,

you run the risk of losing opportunities and missing service level agreement (SLA) commitments. The rerun process itself is critical to meeting job-flow deadlines and achieving accurate results. Productivity may suffer as staff is diverted to verify data, manually re-sequence schedules or recreate a report or file. Unfortunately, setting up a rerun manually is time-consuming and errorprone, and if configured incorrectly, the job may fail again or use invalid data. CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers safeguards performance by automating the rerun process and reducing the risk of rerun errors. Features Mainframe 2.0 CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers has adopted key Mainframe 2.0 features that are designed to simplify your use of CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers and enable your staff to install, deploy and maintain it more effectively and quickly. CA Mainframe Software Manager: CA Mainframe Software Manager (CA MSM) automates CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers installation, deployment and maintenance and removes SMP/E complexities. The Software Acquisition Service enables you to easily move product installation packages and maintenance from CA Support Online directly to your mainframe environment and prepare them for installation. The Software Installation Service standardizes CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers installation, which includes a new, streamlined Electronic Software Delivery (ESD) method that allows CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers to be installed using standard utilities. This service also provides standardized SMP/E product installation and maintenance via APARs and PTFs, and simplifies SMP/E processing through an intuitive graphical user interface and an intelligent installation wizard. The Software Deployment Service enables you to easily deploy CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers in your mainframe environment. CA MSM Consolidated Software Inventory (CSI) updates and infrastructure improvements add flexibility to CA MSM processing of CSIs and enable CA MSM to more effectively utilize CPU and system memory. Installation Verification Program (IVP) and Execution Verification Program (EVP): As part of qualification for inclusion in the set of mainframe products from CA Technologies released every May, CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers has passed stringent tests performed through the IVP and EVP to find and resolve interoperability problems prior to 2

release. These programs are an extension of our ongoing interoperability certification initiative launched in May 2009. Best Practices guide: This guide provides information on CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers installation, initial configuration and deployment to shorten the learning curve for staff who are responsible for the installation and management of this product. Health Checker: The Mainframe 2.0 Health Checker provides CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers Health Checks that execute under the IBM Health Checker for z/os. Key capabilities Automating reruns: The successful execution of workload directly correlates to the achievement of your productivity goals. When a rerun is necessary, an automated approach lessens the impact on production. If a rerun fails, productivity is further degraded and the impact can spread to business-critical areas. CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers reduces or eliminates restart errors by recording information about a job as it executes, and uses this data to accurately rerun a job when necessary. Specifically, it uses this information to: Determine the appropriate restart step within a failed job Identify non-restartable steps Perform data set maintenance to prevent errors during a restart such as an out-of-sync generation data set group (GDG) or during the occurrence of Not CATLGD 2 conditions Tracking system: CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers provides a job tracking and analysis feature, fostering a proactive approach to everything from mundane errors to disaster recovery scenarios. It displays job execution statistics from online inquiries and batch reports to quantify the impact reruns have on production. In addition, this system helps determine the causes of reruns to help eliminate recurring problems. Out-of-the-box integration: The user interface can be launched from any CA Workload Automation or Job Management product. The online interface can also be secured by CA ACF2 for z/os, CA Top Secret for z/os, and IBM s RACF. CA 1 Tape Management interface will expire tape data sets during a job restart. CA APCDDS utilizes a CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers interface to automate the rerun process, eliminating the need to change DDS to DDSR in the PARM field of the EXEC statement. 3

What s new in r11.0 NJE support for remote restarts: The ISPF interface for the CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers permits the specification of an NJE node name from which to retrieve JOB information. The NJE job's restart information is displayed and can be altered to permit the submitting system to control the restart of NJE jobs in the same way it controls the restart of local jobs. Flexible step restart selection: CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers permits the selection of multiple individual steps or step ranges for restart. This change creates more flexibility in selecting the portions of a job to run and avoids the need to rerun the job multiple times to process the steps required. Dynamically allocated data sets: CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers detects dynamically allocated data sets and adds them to the CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers database. These data sets are maintained the same way as the data sets allocated in the JCL. Abender program support: CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers now treats steps that execute certain programs as non-restartable. Use the ABENDPGM keyword in the DBAS configuration file to designate the programs as non-restartable. CA Datacom /DB space monitor: This release introduces a component to allow monitoring of space in the Datacom database and issue a warning message when an area reaches a specified percentage. The threshold is customizable in each instance. Audit capabilities: The online interfaces and certain batch jobs include a built-in audit for changes made. A new module is callable to determine whether you want auditing with OLD and NEW records to create the audit elements. RD=NR JCL parameter: When the JCL parameter RD=NR is specified on the EXEC statement, CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers will treat the step as being non-restartable. JOBLOG creation when SUB=MSTR: In previous releases, when CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers was brought up before JES, no JOBLOG was available for problem determination. CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers now issues a Request JOB SSI call to establish a JOB LOG after JES initializes. Scheduling product condition code support: A new module lets you set a job for restart from any scheduling package. AUTO-SETUP is called with input of job name and step number, and performed for the job. A new RMS parameter is available to deactivate CA WA Restart Option for z/os Schedulers condition code processing. 4
