The Clinical Nurse/Midwife provides direction and support to other nursing/midwifery staff while promoting professional standards of practice and conduct, and is responsible for achievement of unit goals and standards. The Clinical Nurse/Midwife may be allocated portfolio responsibilities to facilitate this. Your Key Responsibilities Fulfil the accountabilities and responsibilities of this role in accordance with Metro South s purpose and objectives, as outlined below. Provide clinical leadership in problem solving, planning, and coordination of nursing/midwifery at an advanced level including health promotion activities. Maintain accountability for the standard of care delivered while providing support and direction to other staff/midwives. Maintain effective communication within the multidisciplinary team including interpersonal and written skills. Promote professional practice through participation in professional development of self and others including performance appraisal and development and clinical education including preceptorship. Participate in risk management, safety and quality and evidence based practice and research activities that support the provision of quality, cost effective care. Role Description Date: May 2013

Qualifications/Professional registration/other requirements Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association within Australia. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties. Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with a current annual practicing certificate is essential. A Bachelor of Nursing or Midwifery or equivalent is a desirable qualification for this position. A post graduate qualification, or currently enrolled in a post graduate program in a relevant area of study is desirable. Current registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia is mandatory. Neonatal Nursing postgraduate certificate and / experience would be considered favourably. Education for Practice in Queensland (EPiQ) Education for Practice in Queensland (EPiQ) is a suite of statewide blended learning programs for nurses and midwives employed within Queensland Health. The EPiQ format comprises approximately two thirds online learning and one third practical learning undertaken in the clinical setting for a specialty area of practice. EPiQ is designed to progressively build the knowledge, skills and capacity of the nurse/midwife. It is an expectation that all newly employed nurses/midwives (with the exception of Assistants in Nursing/Midwifery) undertake the program of learning to assist with transition into the workplace. This enables the provision of safe, capable nursing/midwifery care and achievement of best patient outcomes within a specific context of practice. Are you the right person for the job? Unit Profile Neonatal Services at Redland Hospital consists of a six cot level 4 special care nursery as described in the Clinical Service Capability Framework (Version 3.1). The Women and Birthing Service is a Baby Friendly Health Initiative Accredited Service. The tertiary referral hospital (for the Women and Birthing Service) is the Mater Mothers Hospital, South Brisbane. DUTY STATEMENT Clinical Nurse Special Care Nursery Women s and Children s Clinical Stream Logan Hospital, Meadowbrook Roles and Responsibilities Clinical Care: Accountable for delivery of a safe standard of neonatal nursing care within the clinical unit. Demonstrate a sound specific knowledge base related to neonatal nursing. Responsible for comprehensive assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care at an advanced level. Consult with Grade 7 leaders(s) on a regular basis in relation to patient care needs. Evidence of clinical problem solving and decision making at an advanced level within the multidisciplinary team approach. Ensure delivery of planned neonatal nursing care in accordance with procedures and work instructions. Ensure effective and timely discharge processes are achieved including referrals to appropriate health agencies. Uses knowledge of managed care and casemix principles to minimise delays to patient discharge. Undertake clinical rounding of assigned patients at least second hourly. Leadership/ Management: Act as a resource and role model for the neonatal nursing team. Facilitate open and responsive communication between members of the multidisciplinary team, management, women and their families and/ or significant others. Plan and coordinate appropriate neonatal nursing skill-mix and patient allocation according to unit activity and acuity. Demonstrate an understanding of neonatal nursing frameworks and legislation that governs nursing and midwifery practice. Demonstrate an awareness of professional neonatal issues impacting on clinical neonatal practice. Facilitate and participate in ongoing professional development. Maintain and upgrade professional skills including clinical competencies. Assist the Nurse Unit Manager maintain neonatal nursing skill by ensuring compliance with clinical competencies. Promote own professional development by accepting relieving Grade 7 positions. Regularly attends unit meetings identifying issues and participating in problem solving activities with colleagues and peers. To participate in own source revenue raising activities and optimise activity based funding opportunities, as applicable to this role. Education and Research: Continually develops own professional knowledge, skills and abilities by participating in unit inservices and mandatory training annually. Commit to an ongoing personal professional development plan and engages in learning opportunities. Assist with clinical orientation of new staff. Act as a preceptor as delegated by the Nurse Unit Manager. Participate in clinical audit activities within the unit. Quality and Safety: Identify and report clinical incidents and near misses on PRIME and supports less experienced staff with clinical incident reporting. Understand the progression of recommendations and outcomes of the PRIME process. Notify workplace health and safety incidents to the Nurse Unit Manager completing documentation clearly and concisely. Notify and respond to any patient complaints so that they can be resolved at the unit level. Complete and / or assists staff to complete the complaint log objectively. Coordinate and participate in quality activities as requested within the clinical unit. Promote a positive image of neonatal nursing amongst families, staff and the local community. Portfolio Responsibility: Participate in portfolio duties for the clinical unit as directed by the Nurse Unit Manager / or Nursing and Midwifery Director.
