Workshop programme Nature-based solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban areas and their rural surroundings Successes, challenges and evidence gaps - towards management and policy recommendations 10.-11. March 2015 Organised by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) & ENCA (European Network of Heads of Nature Conservation Agencies) Interest Group on Climate Change at the International Academy for Nature Conservation Isle of Vilm/Germany In collaboration with German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (idiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig Helmholtz-Center for Environmental Research UFZ

Background Climate change has significant impacts on society and biodiversity. People are likely to experience climate change impacts most directly in cities and urban areas. Technical solutions are only one aspect of climate adaptation and mitigation, while nature-based solutions can foster functioning ecosystems as essential backbone to climate mitigation and adaptation. Management that focusses on green infrastructure as measure towards greening cities has the potential to meet several goals across sectors and may also be cost-effective and sustainable. Nature-based solutions to adaptation can therefore help to address both the 2020 targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as well as those of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Objectives The aim of this workshop is to showcase and explore good practice of nature-based solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation in Europe s urban areas and their surrounding landscapes, and to analyse challenges and identify indicators of success. An explicit goal is to assess how this concept can help conservation to work across sectors in collaboration with e.g. urban planning, architecture, forestry as well as water, tourism and health. This workshop will also serve as a thinktank (a) to steer the content of the international BfN/ENCA conference on Biodiversity and climate change in urban areas and their rural surroundings including interactive workshops on 17.-19.11.2015 in Bonn/Germany, (b) to guide the development of a background review paper, and (c) to draft a position paper with recommendations for policy, practice and science that should be adopted by the conference plenary. Programme All participants are highly encouraged to contribute to the worshop programme with presentations of case studies, own experience and information about existing networks/projects etc. related to the topic. The draft programme is still subject to change. Contributions are welcome to any part of the programme. Concept and facilitation PROF. DR. ALETTA BONN + DR. NADJA KABISCH, IDIV / UFZ, LEIPZIG DR.
