THE WINERY FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE PRESENT The winery rises in the hills that overlook the ancient Via Emilia, on the boundary between Emilia and Romagna, at elevations ranging from 300 to 450 meters. Here, in the very heart of the region, in Castel San Pietro Terme, Umberto Cesari and his wife launched their own enterprise in the early 60s. From the very beginning, the winery has always strongly believed in its growing area, able to produce extraordinary grapes, and had pledged to enhance and promote it. The passion for high quality wine has been the reason why Umberto Cesari founded the winery, and still now it represents the basis of its growth, development and success. THE GROWING AREA The original 20 hectares of that first estate grew over the years to become a total of some 170, and an additional 180 hectares of vineyards rent from its neighbours. The local growing season receives a decidedly beneficent influence from the mild climate of these breeze-favoured hills, which march down as far as Tuscany. They are protected by an arc of calanchi, or steep, eroded slopes, which are known in this area as Calanchi azzurri for the bluish hue the slopes assume during sunny days. Today Umberto Cesari winery comprises six separate properties: Casetta, Parolino, Ca' Grande, Laurento, Liano and Tauleto. The character of the local climate determines what is planted in the vineyards. Red grapes, particularly for Sangiovese DOC, are planted facing southwest, while the whites face northeast. GRAPES Umberto Cesari was the first producer in Emilia-Romagna to believe in the significant quality potential of the Sangiovese grape, and world-class Sangiovese wine has always served as the cornerstone of its winemaking philosophy. Besides, the winery has always given its commitment to the enhancement of the typical varieties of the region, for this still cultivates with passion Trebbiano, Albana di Romagna and Pignoletto. Moreover, the focus on the consummatory together with the continuous experimentation have allowed us to introduce other international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes on these estates, 70% of which are harvested by hand and the remainder by machine, are vinified exclusively in the Umberto Cesari cellar, utilizing the most up-to-date technology but with the most sensitive respect for local winemaking traditions and for the local environment.
THE AGEING The company has always followed the entire production chain, from the harvest of the grapes to the bottling up and to the ageing process; the great red wines are aged in barrels, Tonneaux or Barriques. To the latter phase Umberto Cesari has dedicated a brand new space able to combine tradition and innovation: a cellar of about 2000 square meters, which contains over 600 barrels, tonneaux and barriques. This is the place where Umberto Cesari wines age to get ready to become those great products recognized worldwide. Cartella stampa - Umberto Cesari

UMBERTO CESARI Inspired by his passion for wine, Umberto Cesari began in the early 1960s to dedicate his life to making world-class Sangiovese. With few resources but a wealth of enthusiasm, he started in a period when quality and varietal faithfulness where alien concepts in Romagna. But he succeeded in a few years to win recognition and appreciation for his wines, particularly abroad, so much so that he became considered the ambassador to the world of Sangiovese. His long-time dream became true when Tauleto, his iconic wine, was named in both 2003 and 2007 the Best Sangiovese at the IWSC of London. He continues his handson role in management of the winery, still personally involved in the winemaking. With the assistance of a winemaking team, he oversees the entire production process and ensures consistent wine quality.
